Easter Facts
Archdiocesan News
All around us, nature is rejoicing. The light returns. Snow is melt-
ing, gardening is just around the corner— and thank God – the
temperature is not soaring but it is slowly rising. We have looked
forward to putting on our new clothes for this holiday, of celebrat-
ing egg hunts in the afternoon, and having a great time with fam-
ily members.
We celebrate the greatest miracle of all time — the bodily resur-
rection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
While we all believe this a question that we must ask ourselves
is this: What difference does the resurrection of Jesus Christ
make in my life? If Jesus is risen, it means God is not dead. So
why do we treat Him that way sometimes? Our Lord is not like
our smart phone that we can put on “Do Not Disturb” mode. He
is with us always. There is the temptation of wanting to put Jesus
in a nice, neat box — that box I open on Christmas and Easter. Or
if I am practicing my faith, I put Jesus in a box that I open on Sun-
days.
The point of the Resurrection is that Jesus lives — and not in just
some nice, abstract way “in our hearts” — but that He is a real
Person (the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity) who wants a
real, personal relationship with each and every one of us. Jesus
relates to each of us in a unique way. He knows all our life expe-
riences; He knows our strengths and weaknesses; He knows our
sins, our hurts, our feelings, and our relationships (both good
and broken). On this Easter Sunday, let us give thanks to the
Lord for the gift of Jesus Christ and His resurrection. If you have
been away from the Church, recommit your life to Him, to being
cognizant of His presence, so that His resurrection may not be a
nice memory but a personal reality.

Fifteenth Station: Jesus is raised up in all fullness.
The resurrection is taking place
today. How is it taking place in
your life, your community, and in
the world?
Hold fast to hope: “I was typing a sentence con-
demning the brutal bombing of Iraqi children when she
came into my study, pulled my chair from the desk, took my
hand, and cried, ‘Hurry.’ We raced two blocks to an aban-
doned house where a front yard had just been attacked and
overtaken by wild violets, by Johnny-jump-ups. We stood in
silence for three long minutes and cheered the victory of
beauty.” These words of Sr. Mary Lou Kownacki in NCR
(https://www.ncronline.org/blogs/soul-seeing/hold-fast-
hope-fragile-flowers-shout) speak so beautifully to this glori-
ous day. In the darkness of poverty and fear we can still see
the beauty that springs forth at God’s hands. The issues and
concerns of the day are our opportunities to allow God’s love
and mercy to shine.

RECONCILIATION BRINGS EASTER JOY
By Mary McClusky (Project Rachel Ministry Development),
March 11, 2016
[EXCERPTS] Although Easter is a
time of great joy for many, it can also
be a painful season. Imagine a wom-
an who has had an abortion watching
children frolic through the grass at an
Easter egg hunt. She may silently ache for the child
she'll never carry in her arms. Her focus is on the tomb,
not on Jesus' victory over sin and death and the joy of
the Resurrection. Those who mourn the loss of their
children to abortion may feel they are not worthy of
God's love….
Many healing journeys begin with the sacrament
of reconciliation…. We receive mercy, pardon, and
grace to strengthen us. If you know someone hesitant
to approach the sacrament because of a past abortion,
assure them that Jesus, who never tires of forgiving, is
eagerly awaiting them….
When you encounter those who avoid returning to
the Church because they fear judgment, it may be
helpful to remind them of all whom Jesus forgave and
healed. The woman caught in adultery. The good thief
on the cross next to him at the Crucifixion. The woman
of many sins who washed Jesus' feet with her tears. St.
Paul had been dedicated to the killing and persecution
of the early Christians until Jesus appeared to him.
Even St. Peter, our first Pope, denied Jesus three times
after knowing that he was the Christ. Pope Francis has
written: "It might seem shocking but I derive comfort
from Peter: he betrayed Jesus and even so he was cho-
sen" (The Name of God is Mercy, 41–42). Remember
that Jesus said: "there will be more joy in heaven over
one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous
people who have no need of repentance" (Lk 15:7)….
Our celebration of life given to us by Christ's victo-
ry over sin and death continues long beyond the Easter
season through the sacraments…. May God's grace
help each of us become channels of healing mercy, so
all who suffer from abortion find peace in Jesus, the
Church he founded, and the joy of the Resurrection.

Get Your Family Moving! Movement and exercise aren’t just for adults. In fact,
there are simple ways that event the busiest family
can get moving. Try out these tips for exercise and
movement that can be enjoyed by the kids, teens and
adults together.
Walk More Go for a pre- or post- dinner walk. Building a walk into
your daily schedule is a great way to ensure everyone
is getting some exercise.
Play Games Choose native activities. Instead of choosing family
activities where you are sitting, like movies, board
games, or video games do things like riding bikes,
playing frisbee, or tag in the yard. And when you go to
the park, play with the kids!
Make It Fun Turn TV commercials into fitness breaks. Invent silly
names for simple exercises (pushups=Bob the Builder
Muscle Builders) and then do them together until the
show comes back on. You can also have the kids take
turns being the leader and deciding which exercise to
do.
Dance Around Turn on the music and start to dance. Get the whole
family moving and being silly together.
Plant A Garden Gardening is a great way to exercise plus the whole
family can enjoy the fruits of their labor with fresh flow-
ers or produce. Yard work such as raking leaves and
jumping in them is another way to get everyone mov-
ing.
Learn Something New Take a class. Do a new activity together such as kara-
te, yoga or dance or join a sports team.
Choose Wisely Choose video games and TV shows wisely. You don’t
have to completely cut out screen time. Look fro
games and programs that get kids moving.
Spiritual Health Tip When we keep our minds on Jesus, He keeps our
minds at peace. Happy Easter!

EASTER FACTS
The Easter Season lasts for 50 days. It ends with the feast
of Pentecost, May 23rd. The Easter Season celebrates the
resurrection and life that Jesus gave us. The readings will
speak of the appearances of Jesus to his disciples. On East-
er day we have the Easter Bunny. The legend says that the
Easter Bunny was the first animal at the
tomb when Jesus rose from the dead.
The bunny was so affected by the ap-
pearance of Jesus that the bunny turned
white. He also was so startled at the
sight that he became very jumpy. The
Easter Eggs are a symbol of new life.
Every Sunday is a celebration of the res-
urrection. Every Sunday is like Easter
Sunday because at every Mass we re-
member the death & resurrection of Jesus. Don’t let Easter
Sunday be the last time you come to Church!
Help! “We love receiving children’s art-
work in the collection! We simply
ask that you confine these beauti-
ful illustrations to drawing paper,
not the giving envelopes. Thanks!”

June 5-8 | The Alaska Catholic Youth Conference
returns to Anchorage on June 5 – 8, 2017. This
year’s theme, He has done great things, comes from the
Gospel of Luke and mirrors the theme for the annual World
Youth Day chosen by Pope Francis. ACYC will engage teens
to look at where the greatness of the Lord has been present
in their lives and in the world around them, magnificently
pouring His love, grace, and mercy into their lives. The Lord
is inviting teens to say “Yes” to live as today’s disciples of
Christ, following the example of Mary, who said “Yes” as a
teen to the angel, Gabriel. Many will be present to challenge
and guide teens including Archbishop Etienne, Meg Hunter-
Kilmer, and Jesse Manibusan. The week will be packed with
sacraments, prayer, music, inspiration, learning, food,
games, and fun. Find The Alaska Catholic Youth Conference
