Executive Summary The East Side Union High School District Education Foundation was founded in 2009 to help the school district deal with severe budget reductions caused by the recession. Those reductions had a significant impact on the district’s ability to support educational, athletic, and co-curricular programs. While the district took serious steps to address the financial crisis, the newly developed Foundation focused on securing new funding to support East Side students.

In sponsoring fundraising activities such as the East Side Hall of Fame, the Foundation’s activities also showcased many significant accomplishments of East Side graduates and promoted an added sense of pride in the district and the community it serves.

Although funding for education has improved in recent years, and some programs have been reinstated, there remains a need for the Foundation to engage with the community and provide the additional resources our students deserve.

We are led by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by community and student volunteers who assist with our programs and events. Aside from a minimal monthly expense to a web consultant, the Foundation has no paid staff. All net funds raised go directly to support student achievement.

The Foundation maintains a website, Facebook page, and a quarterly e-newsletter. Our major fundraisers include the bi-annual East Side Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and an annual crab feed. Additionally, we receive private contributions from members of the East Side community, district alumni, and beyond.

This report represents over $100,000 in support for East Side students through Foundation fundraising and giving. Over fiscal years 2014-15 and 2015-16, we were proud to fund semi-annual Teacher Innovation Grants, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) programs, Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez Awards, athletics and debate teams, and the annual Special Education Prom.

Thank you for your continued support of our work!

Thomas P. Ryan Hall of Fame The East Side Union High School District 's Thomas P. Ryan Hall of Fame was established in the early 1970s to publicize and honor the outstanding achievement of graduates of East Side high schools. East Side Crab Feed For the past two years, the Foundation has hosted a Crab Feed Fundraiser at the Scottish Rite Center in San José. East Side sports teams, bands, and other student groups have partnered with the Foundation to sell tickets and collect prizes for a raffle and silent auction in exchange for a share of the event proceeds. More than 300 guests have attended our first two crab feeds, enjoying lots of great food, cold beverages, and good company. Look for our next crab feed coming in the Spring of 2017!

Special Education Prom Organized to provide students with special needs with the same high school experience as their classmates, the district’s Special Education Prom is held every spring. The Foundation is honored to support this night of music, dance and fun.

Arts & Writing Awards Foundation grants are often provided to worthy special initiatives not supported by regular school funding. In an effort to recognize the creative writing, art, and photography skills of East Side students, the Foundation has been proud to fund the district’s Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King writing and art contests. The Foundation also supports the East Side 11 Photo Awards program and the district’s annual visual arts student show.

Thanks for giving our students opportunities to enhance learning mathematics with the help of technology such as graphing calculators and iPads. A majority of our students agree that technology helps them learn faster and earn better grades. In addition, many of them want to see more technology used in the classroom and have a desire to learn more about it. I'm collaborating with other teachers on site to plan more lessons using technology to better serve our students. — Mary Pollett, Yerba Buena HS

Financials The Foundation has no paid employees and one modestly paid media consultant who keeps our website up to date, designs flyers, publishes a quarterly newsletter, sends press releases, and provides marketing support. We are a volunteer-led organization driven by a passion for our students and the future of the district. As such, we’re proud that a majority of our revenue is invested in our programs.

See the charts below for a glimpse at our finances over the past two fiscal years.

Budget Notes Because the biennial Hall of Fame event is the main driver of the Foundation’s revenue, and in order to maintain our programmatic support year over year, we budget on a two-year cycle.

The Foundation did not hold a Hall of Fame event in 2014-15, which accounts for the deficit in that FY.

Almost all proceeds from the annual crab feed are donated back to the student groups who partner with the Foundation to sell tickets and staff the event.

Our Board of Directors is currently exploring future district needs and fundraising strategies.
