Length of Period (mins.) 40 Total Clock Hours: 120 Periods per Cycle: 6 Length of Course (yrs.) 1.0

Type of Offering: required elective

Description of Course Course Title:

12th Grade English, CP, World Literature Description:

This course is mandatory for the student who has completed tenth and eleventh grade English Honors, but who does not select English Advanced Placement or Humanities. While this course is an option for all twelfth grade students in the college preparatory program, it is not recommended for those students who have not taken eleventh grade English Honors, as it uses British literature as its background.

Goals:

Critical and analytical thinking skills will be stressed in the writing and oral literature analysis. In the vocabulary section of the course, the students are expected to develop their writing vocabulary. In addition, the students should develop a knowledge and application of grammar, usage, and mechanics as part of the writing program. The course consists of a survey of world literature from ancient times, a selected period novel, a selected Shakespearean play, and at least one student-selected outside reading. It includes a strong emphasis on vocabulary and instructions in advanced composition and the research process. Students will become extensively involved with organizational and conceptual analysis and will demonstrate these skills as they engage in written and oral activities. Proper, formal grammar will be instructed in conjunction with student writing.

Requirements:

Students will be required to read an extensive amount of world literature (not including American Literature) for in-class discussion and in-class and out-of-class writing assignments. Additionally, they will be required to listen, think, analyze, and synthesize. They will be required to participate orally on a daily basis. Students will be required to participate in a major research project culminating in a typed manuscript. They will be required to write at least one out-of-class book report on a 21st century novel and to write other out-of-class and in-class writing assignments at the discretion of the instructor.
