Will this be the year that TampaBay gets slammed by Mother Nature? That is the big question every year ashurricane season rolls in. And, the an-swer is, at least as I’m writing this, who knows? Fire Chief Tom Jamisongives some great advice (see pg. 4)about what to do to prepare for a hur-ricane and what to do in case one isbearing down.

As someone who has ran fromseveral hurricanes, I can tell you thenumber one thing – don’t wait untilone is bearing down on you to leave! The problem with hurricanes is thatyou just can’t trust their number – aCat. 1 storm can morph into a Cat. 2in minutes, or a Cat. 2 into a Cat. 3,and so on. Many times, the storm willstrengthen right before it slams intoland. So, follow the preparednessguidelines, available at the fire depart-ment, pay heed to Chief Jamison’s ad-vice, and don’t hesitate to leave. And,my personal advice is to put your fam-ily photos in a box or on a flash drivethat you can carry with you. A hurri-

cane is no force to be reckoned with! Prior to moving to this part of the

state, my husband and I started ourfamily up in the Panhandle. We built ahouse on St. George Island and 13years later, I still miss that view! Wewere in the Panhandle for ten yearsand living there, we experienced quitea few storms. My husband traveled alot for work then and inevitably, everytime a storm came he was far away.

When even a tropical storm came,we left the island and would stay at mysister’s house in Apalachicola becauseat that time no one could trust theaging bridge not to be washed out.During one such storm that did de-velop into a Category 1 hurricane, Ilay on the floor at my sister’s unable tosleep as I listened to the wind howlingand the weather radio, hearing the re-port of three tornadoes hitting St.George Island. When we were able toreturn, I saw the path that one ofthem took – winding around myhome and my two closest neighbors, snapping off trees on the vacant lots

around us. We were all so fortunate toonly lose a few shingles.

The biggest scare of my life was inSeptember 1995, when hurricaneOpal destroyed a good part of thePanhandle east of Panama City Beach. At that time we were building ourhome and renting a tiny house at In-dian Pass Beach, where my sister andher family were also renting. Her hus-band decided to stay and help his dadwho was in the National Guard. So,the two of us, with three babies andtwo dogs in tow, decided to wait forother family members to leave andtravel together. Never again! Wavescrashed over my SUV as we leftApalachicola, and while we were on it,the local radio station announced thatthe Apalachicola bridge was closed. We were terrified. Evacuating fromhere will be much more difficult be-cause there are a lot more people here.Hopefully we have a mild season, butyou never know. If not, don’t wait!

Pool and Water Safety By Tom Jamison, Fire Chief,

East Lake Fire RescueSummer is right around the

corner and our families will be en-joying the area's wonderfulbeaches, lakes, and swimmingpools. East Lake Fire Rescue wantsto remind everyone to have fun,but be safe. Florida loses morechildren under age five to drown-ing than any other state. The over-whelming majority of thosedrownings occur in private swim-ming pools. Just as tragic asdrowning, near drowning can causebrain injuries resulting in a lifetimeof medical care.

Here are some tips to keep youand your family safe:

* Create layers of protection ifyou own a pool (fencing, child-proof gate, etc.).

* Constantly supervise the chil-

dren who are in or near water andkeep them within reach. Limit dis-tractions which may interfere withsupervision.

* Limit access from inside thehome. Use childproof door locksand door alarms.

* Limit access from outside thehome: Use locked self-latchingself-closing gates and pool safetyfences. Keep furniture away fromthe safety fence to discourage kidsfrom climbing over. Hot tubsshould have a locking cover.

* Keep the pool area free oftrip hazards. Keep toys and float-ing objects out of the pool. Main-tain the water level three to fourinches from the top. Use pool cov-ers when the pool isn't in use.Place a wave alarm in the pool.

* Enroll in swim lessons andmake sure family members canswim too.

Always swim with a buddy andmake sure children are never leftunattended. Use life jackets forswimmers still learning, but don'trely on these alone. Establish rulesfor play areas, ensuring drains andsuction fittings are off limits.

* Teach children to always askpermission to swim.

East Lake Fire Rescue person-nel are available to perform a poolsafety survey "free of charge."Contact us to schedule an appoint-ment at (727) 784-8668.

For further information and re-sources on pool and water safety, contact the Florida Suncoast SafeKids Coalition led by All Children'sHospitalat [email protected] or go to-http://flsafepools.com/about.

Let's not meet by accident!

It's Hurricane Season - Are youprepared?

By: Tom Jamison, Fire Chief,East Lake Fire Rescue

Hurricane Season begins onJune 1st and continues until De-cember 1st. We have seen whatlarge powerful hurricanes are capa-ble of with Andrew in 1992,Charley in 2004 and Katrina in2005; these stand out as stark ex-amples. It is imperative that youand your family are preparedshould we be threatened by a hurri-cane. Here are some things youshould do.

Be informed. Know your evac-uation zone. Stay tuned to localnews; get a weather radio. Knowwhere the evacuation routes andshelters are located. Have an evac-uation kit prepared. If an evacua-tion of your location is notmandated, and you are choosing toshelter in place, have a survival kitprepared. Understand the "cone"reference and the difficulties ofcompletely accurate prediction of astorm's path. If an evacuation ismandated for your location, evacu-ate! Most deaths occur from the

storm surge, and once it begins, you may not be able to escape.

Have an emergency plan inplace. Prepare a document check-list of important papers to take withyou if you evacuate. Do what youcan prior to the storm season toharden your home for wind dam-age: Brace the garage door, protectthe windows and strengthen thegable ends of your roof. Prepareyour home as the storm approachesby shuttering windows (tapingthem does not work) and securingany loose items outside the homethat could become projectiles.

Pinellas County has some goodresources available for hurricanepreparedness. "Surviving TheStorm It's Everyone's Responsibil-ity" is the official hurricane guidefor Pinellas County. These guidesare available at your local fire sta-tion, or you can contact the countyat www.pinellascounty.org or (727)464-3000.

If you need additional informa-tion or have questions regardingyour evacuation level, evacuation

shelters, or general preparation, please contact us at (727) 784-8668.

The Chapel Community Churchis a non-denominational ChristianChurch that has become very popularwith local residents for its combinationof modern and classical Christian ele-ments, its commitment to family andworship, and its Bible-based focus onthemes that everyone can relate to.

Conveniently located in TarponSprings at 2795 Keystone Rd. justwest of East Lake Rd., people comefrom all over the bay area to worshipat The Chapel because of its high en-ergy, technologically savvy, come-as-you-are approach to living life as aChristian. The sign on the door says itall, for they believe that, “the Chapel isnot just a place you go to, but a placeyou go from.”

Pastor Mark Quattrochi was serv-ing as Executive Pastor at Grace Fam-ily Church in Lutz, when he and hiswife, Trisha, had a calling to plant achurch of their own. Part of the ARC(Association of Related Churches),their new church opened in January of2010, and originally shared the same

name. “Pastor Q,” as he’s lovinglyknown, completely remodeled thespace and created a church whereeveryone is welcome to be a part ofThe Chapel. This year they changedtheir name to The Chapel, and theirlogo, which is an image of a mosaic-style stained glass, represents how peo-ple from all different backgrounds cancome together for one purpose, tofind their God-given potential.

A Brooklyn New York native, Pas-tor Q has said, “We’re a non-denomi-national church. Just a bunch ofBaptist, Episcopal, Catholic, Presbyte-rian, Pentecostal people who areunited around a common purpose: Toworship Christ together, grow to-gether, and to leave the church to-gether and change our surroundingsfor the better.”

One of the many things that makethis church unique is its approachabil-ity. There’s no stuffy dress code, there’s no high pressure form to fillout on the first day, and there aren’tany hidden agendas. The straightfor-ward, transparent and relevant mes-sages that people come to hear is

wholly Bible-based, and Pas-tor Q’s sermonsare on relatabletopics such asparenting andstrengtheningrelationshipsthrough Christ. Many times ayear, The Chapeloffers informa-tive multi-weekseries that are rel-evant and mod-ern. Based onGod’s word, they tackle subjects suchas “I’m Not Happy,” which is a topicthat recently spoke to people’s heartsabout the emptiness that many of usoften race to fill with stuff, or food, orwhatever we’re hungry for in that par-ticular moment, vs. that feeling ofcomplete contentment that you havewhen you first understand that you areloved by God and are first filled withHis love.

Pastor Q likes to say, “We spendan enormous amount of time pointing

in to worship, the kids ages infant–8thgrade get to take part in supervised ac-tivities all over the campus where theycan play, learn and grow.

“The Clubhouse” is the placewhere the little ones go on Sundaymornings. There, the 0-Kindergartenage group play, learn about Jesus andjust have a good time while their par-ents are in church. “The Zone” is ahigh-energy Nickelodeon-type experi-ence for 1st–5th grade, and there thekids take part in all kinds of fun activi-ties while learning and studying abouthow to live Christian lives even atschool. For the 6th–8th grade set, TheChapel has a program called “Murge”which is a fantastic title for the groupthat is specifically designed to helpthese pre-teens merge into adulthood;this program equips students with in-formation to live the life that God hasintended for them and strives to instillmorals that are so important at thattime in their lives.

High school students love to takepart in “The Element,” which meetson the first Friday of every month. Aninteractive time coupled with live wor-ship music all performed by studentsmakes this a great place for junior highand high school students to connect. There are many students’ small groupsthat meet throughout the week, thesegroups focus on growing spirituallythrough relationships.

Getting InvolvedGroups aren’t just for kids, there

are more than 50 groups and no mat-ter what season of life you are in, thereis a group for you to get involved in atThe Chapel; whether you’re into mo-torcycles or fly fishing, there’s a groupthere for everyone, which just givespeople the chance to hang out andworship while doing things that theyalready like to do, whatever that is –from knitting to skating.

“We meet all over the communityin Pinellas County,” says Pastor Q.

From small groups of people withlike-interests, to missions that dig wellsin third-world countries, the parish-ioners at The Chapel are committed tobringing their faith beyond the walls oftheir church and into the community, which is why the staff helped to createmyVillage, which is the name that theygave to their community outreachprograms. From partnering with exist-ing organizations like HEP (HomelessEmergency Project) of Clearwater tohelping orphans or single moms, vol-unteers take on projects that help thecommunity that we share. From serv-ing the homeless to helping orphansor single moms, The Chapel wants tobe a part of the community and helppeople know that they are not alone, and most of all, that they matter toGod.

These are just a few of the reasonsthat their slogan about The Chapelnot just being a place you go to, but aplace you go from, really fits the bill.

What they’re doing is clearly hit-ting home with a lot of local residents.Pastor Q says, “We are very fortunateto already have over 1,000 people inweekly attendance in 27 months.”

If you are looking for a place toworship that really speaks to your wayof life, you should see what everyone istalking about and visit The Chapel inTarpon Springs. If you’d like more in-formation, their website is extremelyinformative and it gives you the chanceto see Pastor Q’s weekly messages.

People who come take notes, theysing, and they laugh – they come tolearn how to apply the bible to every-day life. They have a great time onSunday, and then they go out into thereal world where they apply their faith. At The Chapel, church isn’t a destina-tion, but a way of life.

He adds, “Really, we’re just abunch of people. We’re from differentbackgrounds, different life experiences– trying to figure faith in Christ outtogether.”

First Step:Every first

Tuesday of themonth, Pastor Q,his wife Trish, andtheir incrediblesupport staff havean informal gath-ering where peo-ple can come tolearn about whatThe Chapel is allabout. People canfind out aboutthe many group

activities, children’s programs, andoutreach possibilities at this meeting.More than a time to gather informa-tion, it’s a chance to really meet thepeople who started it all, ask questionsand get better connected and to findout if The Chapel is the place for youand your family.

The Chapel knows that attendingchurch with little ones in your lap canmake for a chaotic experience, andthat is why they wanted to create aplace where parents could come andreally receive the message.

On Sunday, there are two adultworship times, one at 9 a.m. and oneat 11 a.m., and while the parents come

It seems like only yesterday thatAlex and Ashley Poptodorov followedtheir dreams and started AAP Fitness. In 2005 from a small one-car garageand a large dream of helping others,AAP Fitness was born. Since then,AAP has expanded into their 5th loca-tion in 6 years. From the garage tothe living room to their first modestlocation in Cory Lake ProfessionalCenter in the heart of New Tampa,Alex and Ashley have grown theirdream by making one thing a priority– the mission to help others changetheir LIVES by changing theirlifestyle.

What makes AAP nothing shortof a miracle however, is not the steadygrowth or success experienced overthe years; but instead, two differentpeople with two very different sets oflife experiences coming together andcreating one common dream and mis-sion… to help others learn to live ahealthy, balanced lifestyle.

Alex was on his way to pursuingmedical school when he and Ashleymet. It was love at first sight but it be-

came quickly noticeable to Alex thatAshley needed his help. You wouldnever guess it by meeting Ashley butshe was once 208 pounds and miser-able in her life. She struggled tremen-dously with weight loss and began tospiral into an eating disorder. This issomething that Ashley rarely shares, asit is a time in her life that was full ofturmoil and sadness.

Alex saw the tremendous need tohelp Ashley learn what a healthylifestyle truly was. He designed herfirst meal plan, created her workoutsand trained her to a fit and healthy, en-ergetic human being! He taught herabout food and the power of nutri-tion. He took her shopping andtaught not just about good and badchoices but about what is in our foodand how it can truly cure or ail us. Theresults were nothing short of amazingand inspiring to Ashley! She came alivefrom the inside out!

Shortly after her amazing trans-formation Ashley helped Alex to seethat his dream of attending medicalschool was not really his heart’s desire.

AAP Fitness Expands into Palm Harbor

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria and brought tothe US in 1990, Alex was pursuing the“American dream” instead of hisheart’s desire. Being strong believers,Ashley got Alex to see that God’s planis not always our plan – she convincedhim to follow his heart and start ahealth and wellness fitness center

where others could gain from hisknowledge and her experience.

During the almost 7 years since itsinception, AAP Fitness has touchedthe lives of countless individuals andfamilies looking to adopt a balancedhealthy lifestyle. AAP grew and be-came a big part of the New

A Missing Man Dedication Cere-mony was held on April 24 at the newMedical Center of Trinity. Thispoignant ceremony is symbolic of theAmericans still missing from each ofthe five services – Army, Navy, MarineCorps, Air Force, Coast Guard – andcivilians. The purpose of the ceremonyis twofold—to acknowledge the inabil-ity of our missing to be with us in thecelebrations we hold because they havebeen left behind, and to honor theirsacrifice to our country.

In the hospital's dining areastands a lone table beautifully set fordinner. On it are six complete placesettings, a red rose in a vase center-piece, and a Bible. The table is re-served for our missing loved ones, andit symbolizes that they are here with usin spirit. It serves to remind us thatour troops are in harm's way every dayand we should never forget these bravemen and women who heeded the callto service.

A memorial tablet on a tripodnear the table reads: “The table isround to show our everlasting concern

for our missing men.The tablecloth iswhite symbolizingthe purity of the sol-diers' motives whenanswering the call toduty. The single redrose, displayed in avase, reminds us ofthe life of each of themissing and theirloved ones andfriends of these Amer-icans who keep thefaith, awaiting an-swers. The vase is tiedwith a red ribbon, a symbol of ourcontinued determination to accountfor our missing. A slice of lemon onthe bread plate is to remind us of thebitter fate of those captured and miss-ing in a foreign land. A pinch of saltsymbolizes the tears endured by thosemissing and their families who seek an-swers. The Bible represents thestrength gained through faith to sus-tain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.The inverted glass symbolizes their in-ability to share this day with us. The

chairs are empty—they are missing. We MUST bring them home.”

The ceremony began with theHonor Guard silently entering theroom to the muted strains of "Whenthe Caissons Go Rolling Along" in thebackground. The audience was thenbid to stand for the recitation of thePledge of Allegiance and a minute ofsilent prayer. The Honor Guard thenmoved into position around the diningtable placing the covers (caps) of theArmy, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force,Coast Guard, and a civilian cap on the

dinner plate at each place setting. Next, we sat stunned and sad-

dened, listening to the Missing ManRoll Call. In a duologue between aLeader (on stage) and a Responder (atthe rear of the crowd), the Leader an-nounces, “I am about to conduct aroll call of U.S. Military Personnel.”He then asks the Responder, “If anyfail to respond will you vouch for theirwhereabouts?” “Yes, Sir,” replies theResponder. In all cases, for all MilitaryPersonnel, the Responder replies,“Not present, Sir. Missing in action,

Sir.” The Responder then lists themissing. The numbers are staggering.“In World War I, 3,344 (1918) sol-diers were last seen in Europe, mostlyin Germany and France. In World WarII, 73,690 were last seen in Europe,Asia, North Africa, the Pacific, the At-lantic, and on virtually every continentand ocean in the world. In the KoreanWar, 7,958 were last seen in 1953,mostly on the peninsula of SouthKorea. In the Vietnam War, 1,666were last seen prior to OperationHomecoming in 1973 in South Viet-nam, North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodiaand Thailand and the South ChinaSea. However, many have been re-ported seen alive in captivity sincethen, Sir. There were 126 Cold Warpersonnel last seen sometime betweenthe end of World War II in 1945, andthe end of the Cold War in 1989,when the Berlin wall was torn down.”

“Sir,” the Responder concludes,“We are at war with a ruthless enemywho hates our freedoms and theAmerican way of life. They scoff at theGeneva Convention that was meant toprotect all military personnel, bothfriend and foe, should they ever be-come captured.”

The Leader then addresses ALLAmericans: “Let us all find the resolve

to bring these American heroes home,no matter what it takes. Those whodefend the United States of Americashould not be left in the hands of ourenemies or ever be forgotten. We liveand get the most out of life for thosewho gave up their good days for ourfreedoms. We live on to honor theirmemory, and fight those who wouldlet them be forgotten, so the familiesof the missing may someday findpeace. God bless our service men andwomen and God bless the UnitedStates of America. They are not for-gotten!”

Many local veterans were presentat this stirring ceremony as were theMitchell High School NJROTC; PaulRizzo, senior chief of the NavySeabees and Moe Moyer, State Direc-tor of Rolling Thunder, an organiza-tion whose mission is to educate thepublic that many American POW'swere left behind after all previous wars,to help correct the past, and to protectfuture Veterans from being left behindshould they become Prisoners of Waror Missing In Action. While orthodontics may not be anew concept, it is definitely a changingfield, and things have progressed agreat deal in the last few years. Bracesare smaller and more comfortable, there are more options and affordabil-ity for more people, and braces can getthe job done faster now than in yearspast. Where it might have taken a pa-tient five years to reach their desiredsmile a decade ago, the average lengthfor braces is now about two years.Braces, or appliances that are used tohelp align the teeth, have also changeddramatically. They are smaller and themanufacturing has gotten better, andthe choices are a lot more varied. Theregular silver smile is always availableand effective, and they also offer“clear” or tooth-colored braces thatreally seem to make the braces disap-pear.

And now there is an alternativeto braces called Invisalign, a clear re-tainer-like plate or “aligner” that pa-tients wear over their teeth. Usingcomputer imaging and molds of thepatient’s teeth, a series of these clearaligners are worn until the desired out-

come is reached. Drs. Albert and Mc-Dowell love Invisalign because it al-lows patients to remove them formeals, which makes for a more com-fortable eating experience for the pa-tient, and it also allows patients to beable to better clean their teeth, thanwith braces.

Dr. Albert and Dr. McDowelltreat patients of all ages, and while themajority of orthodontic patients are intheir “tween” and teen years, they arefinding that a lot more adults are fi-nally taking the opportunity to correcttheir teeth.

“Invisalign is a popular productespecially with adults because it is in-visible and more comfortable thanbraces,” says Dr. Albert.

An Invisalign patient recently said,“Everyone is always so nice at Dr. Mc-Dowell’s office. I've always wantedstraight teeth, but as an adult I didn'twant to get braces. Now that In-visalign is a treatment option, my wifeand I both went through treatmentand love our results!”

Drs. Albert and McDowell willhelp you find the best individualizedtreatment options and their office ac-cepts most types of insurance and of-fers interest-free payment plans as well,

making orthodontic care an option foreveryone.
