Tuesday 17th, 2pm The Dorset Victoria Crosses 1914 – 1918

Talk by Kevin PatienceThe Victoria Cross is Britain’s highest military award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

Since its introduction by Queen Victoria in 1856 there have been only 1,358 awarded to date.

This tiny bronze cross has come to signify bravery above and beyond the call of duty and the First World War saw the exceptional award of over 600 between August 1914 and the Armistice in November 1918. Of these just over 30 were awarded to men who had a Dorset connection, in that they were born, lived or died in the county. This is the story of the cross and the lives of some of the Dorset men who were awarded it during the conflict that has become known as The Great War.

Friday 27th, 2pm Thomas Hardy and the Artists

Talk by Jennie SpiersThomas Hardy had close links with several artists that included Philip Wilson Steer, Henry Tonks, Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell, Augustus John and William Orpen - all of them lured by the bucolic, Hardy-esque charms of Dorset. The author actively encouraged this artistic invasion and keenly reviewed their interpretations of “his” landscapes, even suggesting locations that artists might paint. One Dorset artist, (Herbert Barnard) John Everett (1876 –1949) was born in Dorchester and made Hardy’s ‘Wessex’ one of his main subjects, he also produced a set of plates that he made based on fictional places in Hardy’s works.

How the new Data Protection Legislation affects you?In May of this year the UK’s data protection legislation will be changing. The existing Data Protection law will be scrapped and a brand new law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be introduced. The aim of the new GDPR is to give all individuals more control over who has access to their personal information and what can and cannot be done with it.

As a result of this we will need your clear consent to keep your details on our computers in relation to your bookings and membership administration. Even if you have given us your details many times before we will have to ask you again!

Beginning in May and then continuing over the next 12 months whenever you book onto our courses, workshops, walks and talks, or when you renew your membership, we will ask you if it is OK to put your details on our computer, keep them there and use them to communicate with you. You will also see the same question being added to any forms or letters that we send to you.

After we have asked you we will not need to ask you again but at any time you can ask to see what details we hold about you and, if necessary, you can ask us to amend or delete them. This is your right under UK law and we cannot refuse to do so!

We never share your details with any other organisation at any time and only EDHT staff will have access to your details.

If you have any questions about the GDPR and how it relates to East Dorset Heritage Trust please do get in touch with me and I’ll be happy to help.
