From The Desk Of...The CEOAs our country celebrates its 235th birthday, many of us are planning a fun-filled day of barbecues, sun, and fireworks. Here are a few ways we can all make our star-spangled banner a bit more green.

Opt for locally grown and/or organic produce, avoid foods produced or raised on factory farms or with chemicals and nasty preservatives. Or go a step further and go the vegetarian route, which is an excellent health and culinary choice in its environmental benefits.

Opt for greener tableware and utensils. Options like compostable food containers and biodegradable cups are readily available and inexpensive.

Unfortunately, fireworks are not the safest or greenest spectacle, but they are just so magnificent that they’re hard to cut out of the 4th of July experience entirely. Have a chat with your local fireworks authorities- they might be willing to look into using biodegradable fireworks next year.

Barbecuing can actually be a relatively eco-friendly process if you choose your material wisely. There is a variety of sustainably produced charcoal made from industrial scrap wood and propane

produces close to half the emissions of generic charcoals.

After your party is over recycle, recycle and compost.

Here’s to progress, independence, and living good green lives as American citizens.

Sincerely,Karen Spann - CEO

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?Here Comes the Heat! With a clear sky above and the local corn growing a foot in the last few days, finally summer is on its way. In spite of the rain, the local farmers made it through cherry season and the corn growers were putting their seeds in the ground as soon as the ground was somewhat dry. Now, the sun is finally showing its true color--hot! What a great time to check in on a local business that can help protect us from the dangers of the summer sun.

PSTG, Public Safety Training Group, is a local business that provides education to emergency responders. When I pulled up their website at www.pstgonline.com , I was amazed at how many courses they offer. When I first got this assignment, I thought it was just for firefighters and EMT’s. Their mission is to become a world-class leader in career preparation, in-service training and career development to members of the fire service, law enforcement, emergency medical services and industrial safety fields. As I looked through the many courses, I could clearly

see why so many professionals in the industry choose PSTG for their training.

Their vision to revolutionize the delivery and incorporation of the critical elements of a career in Public Safety at local, state, national and global level allows PSTG to become part of the strategic alliance between the professional and its public. As many Americans would agree, the need for public safety in our nation is growing. With this in mind, crucial training and continuing education is an absolute must for the benefit of the public and the emergency responder as well, no matter what their title or position in the agency.

The team at PSTG includes five leaders in the industry with over 100 years of collective dedicated years in public safety. Their accolades and certifications are too many to list, however they can be found on their website. I think the part I liked best about my research of PSTG is how dedicated they are to giving the professional all the necessary tools they need to keep our public safe in any situation. Having been around law enforcement for many years, I can certainly appreciate the extensive training and education offered to officers and their fellow firefighters, especially when it can save their lives.

The courses offered include Command Courses, Emergency Medical Courses,

Incident Command System Courses, S-Courses, Instructor Courses, Investigation Courses, Management Courses and Prevention Courses. PSTG is proud to announce a new Strategic Alliance with Fire Nuggets, a valuable resource for fire service training. In talking with local fire fighters, they agree that having a local training facility of this caliber in our area is certainly a benefit to everyone in public safety. And PSTG has recently partnered with local CPR FAST. CPR FAST is a recognized Safety Provider of CPR, ACLS, PALS, PEPP, Preventative Health, AED and First Aid Training Programs/Products. CPR FAST was established in 2004 with the vision of providing the highest level of safety instruction in the industry. You can find a link to CPR FAST courses & locations on the PSTG website or by visiting them at www.cprfast.org.

So, for all who train at PSTG and those that attend the training, the Monthly Grapevine gives you ten waving “Old Glory’s” to dedicating your lives to the safety of not just our community, but our entire country. Who will be snooped next? It could be you!

CPR Fast is located at 144 Continente Ave, Suite 130 in Brentwood. They can be contacted at 925-240-5200 or 925-240-5225 or visit www.pstgonline.com

C&H LANDSCAPINGand MASONRY

PRUDENTIAL REALTY

A Place to Call Your OwnThe market is ripe for buyers right now. Interest rates are still at record lows and so are prices. So, now more than ever, you should be telling your landlord goodbye and saying hello to your dream home. However buying a home is such a large investment, possibly the largest purchase you’ll make. So, careful deliberation should be made when deciding which home is right for you. Where do I want to live? How large a house do I want and/ or need? How many bedrooms? What kind of yard and how large?

As a homeowner, you have the benefit of security and stability, as well as the freedom to decorate and remodel. You can redo your kitchen, build a deck, put in a swimming pool, or add a playroom for the kids and make your house a home.

Instead of paying your landlord’s mortgage, you can build equity for yourself and get the tax benefit as well. With each monthly mortgage payment, you’ll own more and more of your home and when you finish paying off the mortgage, every dollar your home is worth is yours.

Of course, the single most asked question I am asked is “Can I afford to buy a house?” One tool you can use is a payment calculator to compare the costs of renting and buying. You can find this on my website under calculator.

Use a website like Realtor.com to look for listings or visit www.myeastcounty.com and start your search there. You can browse MLS listings or sign up for automatic notifications of homes that fit your criteria.

Of course, one of the first steps is to get qualified. This will enable you to have an accurate view of the costs and your options. If your credit rating is in need of repair, or you have a high debt to earnings ratio, an FHA loan or VA loan, if you qualify, can be a great option. And

if you’re not able right now then you can create and action plan to build your credit score and decrease your debt and get on the road to ownership. Feel free to give me a call to get a referral to a qualified lender.

When you own a home, your neighborhood becomes an important part of your life. There’s a greater incentive to get involved in things like local government, your children’s school or the youth soccer league. In addition, you’ll meet people who share common interests.

Although homeownership has its benefits, make sure it’s the right fit for you depending on your financial and personal situations. Give me a call and discuss the benefits of renting verses owning.

TIMELY FEATURE ARTICLE

Fourth of July Safety TipsFor many people, nothing beats lounging in the backyard on the Fourth of July with good friends and family—including the four-legged members of the household. While it may seem like a great idea to reward Rover with scraps from the grill and bring him along to watch fireworks, in reality some festive foods and products can be potentially hazardous to your pets. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center offers the following tips:

• Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Death from respiratory failure is also a possibility in severe cases.

•Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals.

Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

• Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

• Keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. This is particularly true for older animals who have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.

• Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these Article courtesy of www.aspca.org

products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.

• Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.

•Never use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals.

• Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.

Have a fun and Safe 4th of July!

Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants. (Annuals and perennials, flowers, trees, herbs, tomatoes, cacti and succulents. These are all grown by the members propagating what we have planted.) For more information call Leslie Servin (925)634-4088 or [email protected].
