November greetings to all my fellow sailors. We finally made it back from Italy unscathed with many wonderful memories. Our main focus was on Sicily and we did a circle tour around the perimeter. The tyrrhenian sea and Mediterranean Sea was beautiful. We had lunch in Taormina one day which is along the north east coast of Sicily. It was wonderful to see sailboats in Palermo and I thought of all of you. My thought was how I could figure out how to Charter One of those boats to go around the perimeter of Sicily and perhaps some of the islands along the coast. Who in the club has been able to do sailing in the area and is it worthwhile? Our experience left me definitely appreciating the United States and toilet seats as there seems to be a shortage of them in Italy! Your Vice Commodore Diana

THOUGHTS FROM
YOUR
COMMODORE
Nancy Knobbs
There’s nothing like a good book in a nook on a comfy old ship … Though these past couple of months have been full of schedule changes and cancellations that have been hard to keep up with, there are still opportunities to participate in club activities before the end of this year. Hard to believe the year has gone by so fast.
Rotary Park Cruise – November 18-19 Hosted by
your BOG St. Pete Boat Show – December 2-3 - The plan is
to drive over early Saturday morning and either return late that same evening or stay over to enjoy free beer/pizza with Cruising Outpost cruisers party. If there is enough interest in staying over, there are Airbnb houses for 6-10 people to rent together. Please contact Nancy Knobbs if interested in going to the boat show. A meetup for meal and/or drinks will be put together once established how many will be attending. If interested in overnighting contact Nancy ASAP so a big enough Airbnb can be reserved. December Potluck – December 13th . Final membership meeting for 2018. I’m feeling like a fish out of water, literally! I have not sailed in quite some time. It’s been an “off” year. One thing I have been doing is working on my condo and in the process of moving furniture to paint walls etc. I’ve had to clear off book shelves…squirrel…and I got caught up in leafing through all the many books on sailing that I have. Among these books are personal memoirs, instructional guides and manuals, and a few old fictional stories that make you dream of sailing. There are some I’ve dog eared and read cover to cover and others that I have skimmed through and even a good number of books I intended to read but never got around to. With the upcoming SSCA Gam right around the corner, I’ve put aside a small stack that I think some salty sailor might be interested in. A select few are now on my bedside table to nudge me into reading them. But it got me thinking, even if I don’t get out there to sail I can escape on the water vicariously through a good read. Wouldn’t it be all the sweeter still to be sitting out on anchor, hot mug of tea in one hand and a good read in the other. Sail safe _/) NanC
SSCA (Seven Seas Cruising
Association) GAM November 9-12
It has been the tradition of ECSA to provide the SSCA with volunteers to man the concession stand, assist with handing out purchased lunches and setup/teardown of tables, chairs etc. In return, the club keeps profits earned from sales of concessions, and we are provided a table in the flea market at no cost for members to place items to sell. Joe Coleman is coordinating a sign-up for members who would like to volunteer in this effort. Volunteers may also attend SSCA seminars on the day they volunteer. Number of volunteer slots is limited, however. Please sign up at the Oct. 11th and the Nov. 8th membership meetings or contact Joe Coleman directly for options or more information. It is important for our club to help and support other sailing organization/clubs. Please consider participating and be sure to wear your ECSA attire to promote our club!
East Coast Sailing Association General Membership Meeting
October 11, 2017
Call to order: 7:05 p.m. by Commodore Nancy Knobbs Commodore’s Opening Remarks: Nancy welcomed everyone to the meeting, noting that it has been a long time since the last one (September meeting was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma). She expressed hope that the members did not have hurricane damage. Members Cheryl & Bud Heinbaugh suffered a total loss of their boat. It was anchored behind Boy Scout Island. The hurricane damaged the bow area, causing it to sink. They floated it, but ended up having to demolish it, declaring it a total loss. In addition, the boat docked next to Nancy, a Beneteau, dismasted and lost its dinghy. Banana River Café on S. Patrick Harbor Town Marina Welcome to Guests or New Members: Brian Dutra, from the Banana River Power Squadron Ernst Hoffman, Education Officer of the Banana River Power Squadron Bo Platt, Guest Speaker, from the Marine Resources Council Approve Minutes: No minutes in FTC, as the September meeting was cancelled due to hurricane Irma. Approve Treasurer Report: Approved unanimously. Commodore’s Comments: Nominating Committee: At least three people are needed to prepare a slate of nominees for the 2018 ECSA Board. Jesse Camp has volunteered, so we need at least two more. The club will vote for the upcoming board at the December general meeting, with induction of the new board at the Annual Banquet in January. Anyone who wants to serve on the Nominating Committee is invited to talk to any board member. Everyone is asked to reach out to club members to see who is interested in holding an office. Website volunteer: The Board is looking for someone with an interest in heading up the designing and running of a brand-new club web page. Interested persons are urged to contact Bob Wiley, Grover Gregory, or any Board of Governors member. Nancy would like to get the new web page going before the new board starts. Around the board: Rear Commodore report: Tom O’Shea Upcoming cruises: Marker 21, hosted by Don Theriault and Grover Gregory. The date is Incorrect in the FT&C. The date has been changed to October 21-22. A reminder email will be sent out. Don Theriault recently checked out the Marker 21 area by boat, and reported that the anchorage has higher than normal water, but the cruise is doable. Normally ECSA co-sponsors this cruise with the Melbourne Yacht Club. Don will reach out to Page Proffitt at MYC. Grover noted that anchoring probably would be safer with higher water. Past cruises: Titusville, August 19-20, hosted by Scott and Ellie Kiesling. Report from Joe Coleman was that there were two boats, 16 attended by car, everyone had a good time, the barbecue was good, and the hosts Scott and Ellie brought a bug-out bag and talked about emergency procedures. There was a

Viewers in the Mathers Bridge area often see fewer than the total number of boats, because many boaters leave the parade route before that point. The BRPS wants to extend the route past Dragon Point to provide a larger viewing area, including Mathers Bridge. The starting point will be at the north end of the Grand Canal in Satellite Beach, just south of the Pineda Causeway. New this year will be three cash prizes of $150 each for the best decorated boats in the categories of (1) motor boats 30 feet or less, (2) motor boats over 30 feet, and (3) sailboats. Brian stated that there will be a judges’ boat near Dragon Point. He asked if anyone in the club has participated in the past, and for any feedback. Joe Coleman mentioned that for sailboats it is often difficult getting started due to congestion. Participation is free, and the sooner that boaters sign up the better, for getting a tally. He handed out a flyer with more details. A Satellite Beach patrol boat leads the parade, starting out at 6:30 p.m. Nancy thanked Ernst and Brian for the information and will include it in the next FT&C. Brian reiterated that feedback is important to the parade organizers. Old Business: None. New Business: None. 50/50 drawing: Jennifer Clendenin stated the amount as $25, awarded to Winnie Crawford. Guest Speaker Introduction: Bo Platt from the Marine Resources Council, who presented a talk on the condition of the Indian River Lagoon. Meeting adjourned: 7:37 p.m.
