A young Latina in Austin is par t of the city’s largest youth population. But, she is not monolithic. In a way, she’s indefinable – she’s a Spanish speaker and she’s not, native and foreign born, she likes and doesn’t like guacamole, maduras and California rolls. For EAST, Latinitas presents a visual “punto de vista” using photography and mixed media. The work is generated by hundreds of Latina girls at Latinitas’ after school enrichment programs, which are focused on empowering Hispanic girls and teens using media and technology. The photography sale will benefit Latinitas college scholarship fund for its program leaders.

My photography is the tool I use to preserve my present for the future. I took my first photography course in 1988 at Bowie High School here in Austin, Texas. Since then, "photographer" has been at the core of my identity. The Bayou Lafourche series is my purest work: it is an intensely personal photographic exploration of Southeastern Louisiana and the bayou country where I was raised.

2204 Palo Pinto Dr • (512) 965-7061 katydavidar [email protected] • katydavidar t.com

I create my ar twork using a centuries-old technique called Pysanky. This is a batik-type process using beeswax, a small heated funnel, and aniline dyes on eggshells that results in intricately layered patterns of color, geometry and two-dimensional line on a three-dimensional surface. My inspiration comes from traditional Pysanky, Japanese textiles, Middle Eastern tiles and modern graphics.

my latest works deal with the idea of fragments and connection. feeling rather than knowing. choosing instinct over logic to achieve desire rather than defined outcomes. the chaos of volcanoes, a collapsing avalanche, the weight of an anchor. the idea of buoyancy over balance. some locks do not open with keys. freedom comes from belief and choice, and all things are connected.

Compositions often begin with underlying structures, which are then overlaid with patterns of color, shape and texture. An element of chance is injected through materials and processes that cannot be easily controlled or replicated. The unpredictable, and often, unintended results become an essential par t of the work.

Using the sensual qualities of oil, I create layered abstractions which explore the dynamics of color, line, and texture. The viewer is encouraged by their abstraction to interpret their experience of the work rather than the work itself. My process is one in which the ar tist and the paint are equal par tners negotiating the surface of the canvas as if the paint had animate qualities.

I find inspiration for my work while pursuing my favorite pastime – taking long drives and getting lost in them. These drives along quiet country roads or meandering streets of the city give me space to think, observe, meditate, formulate ideas, and discover new sites and sounds. My ar t represents what I pick up, take in, and reinterpret from these journeys.

My work is inspired by cityscapes, most recently the urban landscape of my former home in New York City. Using a variety of materials: paint, string, mesh, plastic, wire, wood, paper, and found objects, I explore the shifting interplay of light, shadow, color and reflections. My constructions are architectural, often sculptural, with deep layers and uneven physical contours.

My ar tistic process is a cathar tic one. It's a way for me to cleanse myself of anxiety, let my imagination run wild, play with possibility, renew my spiritual ideals, explore relationships, and gain insight into my own unconscious drives, fears, and impulses. I lose myself in the process; I find myself, again and again, in the product.

Objects matter – I think that a meal with friends that you’ve spent hours preparing calls for dinnerware crafted with the same care. I think flowers picked fresh from your garden look better in a vase you’ve picked as well. I think you deserve to know the maker of the objects you use every day.

The figures in my paintings have the form and characteristics of human beings, but they are not people. Let’s call them “anthropomorphs”, like the figures we once painted on cave walls. Each one is naked, unadorned, fully disclosed, and inward focused. These beings have no individual stories. Each one exists only in the moment, its full potency expressed in a single existential situation.

The simple overlapping of many small pieces, arranged in just the right way speaks volumes, touching on issues implicitly without being overbearing or sanctimonious. Intrigued by its optic qualities and its ability to change form, glass has been Green's primary material for over 10 years. Currently, Green is creating sculptures that use simple glass rods and LEDs to create works that have a modern design and aesthetic strength.

I get excited by the natural world – what's inside and underneath the surface of things – biologically, energetically and in the psyche. Acrylic paint, gouache

507 Calles St Ste 121 • (512) 587-1151 neenasar [email protected] • neenabuxani.com

I’m inspired by beauty, fashion, positive energy, music and life. To me it's not about what I paint but rather, how my ar t makes you feel. I let color guide my paintings and take them to a place where unrealized emotions are found. It is almost as though each ar twork is a set of emotions compressed into layers of paint; an extension of me released on canvas...

Luis Rico

Oil, mixed media

2412 Hidalgo St • (512) 552-6416 [email protected]

Through my painting I attempt to inspire viewers to rediscover everyday objects and occurrences in order to become conscious of the beauty and magic that is hidden in our daily surroundings and experiences.

2412 Hidalgo St • (512) 796-9276 [email protected] • joseloar t.blogspot.com

I am making an effor t to represent some of the main themes of the human condition such as love, fear, beauty, loneliness, evil, sense of humor, etc. I think that the best way to do this is with figurative painting. Oil on canvas is my preferred media. I am a self taught ar tist and I am teaching myself to use classical painting techniques, such as the underpainting and the application of glazes.

In life, I am inspired by perseverance, transformation and unity without conformity. I carry my passion for these movements into my ar t through seeking out, recreating, and collaborating discarded pieces. Shifting objects from function to form using vivid colors to highlight shape and texture while giving them a renewed purpose and reason to be appreciated.

Jonathan Biehl • Jbiehlart • UP Collective

Oil, acrylic, graphite, charcoal, ink

2326 E Cesar Chavez St • jonathanbiehl-ar t.com

I need to paint. The process allows me the oppor tunity to explore the world in my own way. In many ways it is the only way I can make sense of nature, human cognizance and that sometimes overwhelming feeling of why? It's for this reason I wake up everyday, say why not, and continue to explore.

Mixed media, surfboards, skateboards

2326 E Cesar Chavez St • (361) [email protected]

Oil on canvas

I paint to convey the message of peace, light and unity. The images for my paintings come to me from meditation and observation of human form. By revealing the harmony and unity in elemental forms and shapes, my purpose is a healing one. It is designed to transfigure the human experience of life and death, and to awaken mankind to enlightening power of unity with the universe.

Jewelry

2308 E Cesar Chavez St Unit B • (913) 579-2388 [email protected] • cttjewelry.com

I use the traditional elements of jewelry, that of metal (recycled) and stone (carved by me). In the creation of my work I use myself as a “filter” of scientific observations and data in order to give form to the forces of nature. My jewelry is inspired by the numerically irregular patterns and shapes caused by these forces, especially focusing on the geological processes involved in erosion.

The Horse is mythic, mysterious and elegant to light up an entire landscape. I use this form to travel inner space, filling sketchbooks with blasts of energy in quick gestures, transcribing the energy and essence into movement. I morph my intent into horse and landscape. Studies are peeled out, conjoined and framed. They echo past travail and offer inspiring vibrations into the future.

The pure joy of creation is the wonder of making ar t. However, I always feel better about making more ‘stuff’ when I create with consciousness and conscience. This may include environmental concerns, using recycled materials, dealing with social and relationship issues, making something useful, drawing attention to the wonders of the natural world….

Color, process and materials define my ar t. My approach to painting centers on developing new ways of using paint to coerce color into visually interesting forms. Unique delivery of beautiful color is my intention.

Liliana Wilson • Liliana Wilson Art

Acrylic on panel, canvas, pencil on paper

1404 Canterbury St • (512) 431-5658 lilianawilson@ear thlink.net • lilianawilson.com

My images come from the subconscious. Many of the figures I create appear in ‘other-world’ environments. Often my compositions represent single moments in the lives of individuals that serve as metaphors for those lives. Recently my work has shifted to incorporate spiritual aspects of the universe and its surrounding beauty as necessary components of the human experience.

286

Carlos Lowry guest of Liliana Wilson Art

Acrylic on canvas

1404 Canterbury St • (512) 797-5405 [email protected]

Two major experiences influence my ar t: my Latin American upbringing and my work as a muralist. My paintings are figurative and inspired by culture, politics and technology. Musicians, film and networked reality are frequent themes. My process is an unmapped journey that leads to unanticipated places. Although the stories in my paintings are accessible, they do not entirely reveal themselves.

287

Cecilia Colomé guest of Liliana Wilson Art

Oil on canvas

1404 Canterbury St • (512) [email protected]

My ar twork focuses on nature. I paint nature by isolating an object and adding a surreal quality to the image. I tend to work in series based primarily on color. I often use shades of grey, ranging from almost white to black to create an image then applying transparent glazes of color. This color technique allows me to add a surreal atmosphere and create complex and subtle textures on the canvas.

My ar t is for the most par t improvisational. My drawings and paintings are star ted with little to no planning. I enjoy filling spaces with organic shapes and leaving it up to the viewers imagination to find imagery. My biggest influence/inspiration would be pop ar tist Keith Haring. Keith passed away in the 80's, but I like to think his spirit and style lives on.

He builds off patterns he finds in the basic shapes and colors on the canvas and allows the painting to create itself while guiding it in a direction he finds interesting. Contrast of opposites appeal to him and implementing all sides of the spectrum can be found in his paintings.

His art is a visual expression of personal opinions, reflecting his views about life, society, love, God, etc. His hope is that, in the neutral setting of a public forum, he can create open dialog and inspire the exchange of ideas. He is currently working on a series he calls “Afroamericana,” with the mission is to show the beauty of Black American culture.

I create so that I might ignite those around me and inspire them to pick up the artistic instrument that calls to them most. To express to the world what mirrors there inner emotional life. To release this into the community so that others may experience their vulnerability is magnificent to me. This inspires me to reach deep within myself and find the courage to share what I'm feeling too. And as the threads our expressions intertwine, we understand each other just a little bit more.

ASOP maintains that the photographer's task is to understand the physical proper ties of light and space and to sculpt them into a meaningful experience for the viewer. As this medium is governed equally by the effects of physics as well as by the current state of communicative syntax, a photographer must then necessarily be master of both. Our goal is to nur ture this mindset among our students.

Painting came to the forefront during my first pregnancy. Physiologically there must have been some kind of correlation between what was happening internally and this burning desire to create. I was so curious to explore what it would be like to "color outside the lines.” With abstract ar t you make up the rules as you go... there is no wrong or right and this feels incredibly liberating to me.

My approach to nature photography is more about creating images to express my feelings about the subject, rather than creating the image in strict, journalistic/documentary style. I believe the creative process allows access to a fundamental feeling of flow. To fully tap into this flow requires relentless curiosity, the courage to be vulnerable, and presence in the moment. My mediums of choice are mixed media and dance. Within both of these mediums, I return consistently to themes of layers, dreams, and antiquity.

The Blind Contour Series experiments with developing character narratives from a 'blind' perspective.
