• Portuguese amazed Chinese craftsmanship• Wanted silks and porcelains

• Chinese thought westerners were barbarians.– Saw no reason to interact with them

• Chinese wanted gold and silver (since products were inferior!)• Allowed limited trade and settlement

– Macao was their first (only) trade settlement

Missionaries sought to convert the Chinese

• The Jesuits brought an education approach to conversion

• Matteo Ricci was impressive in his efforts

• But the Chinese were interested in the knowledge—not necessarily the religion…

The Manchus

• The Ming (old)dynasty was failing• The Manchus came from the NE—

busted through the Great Wall and set up their own capital (Beijing) and dynasty—Qing

• Were positive leaders—taking the best, working with the locals.

• Great expansion from 1660-1800.• Economy expanded (American crops)• Population grew• Trade expanded

China continued to reject Westerners.

• English Lord McCartney attempted to set up negotiations— (1793)

• Nope. He had a bad attitude! • “insisted” the British were superior• Wouldn’t kowtow

• Emperor Qianlong didn’t want anything to do with this jerk…

Ignoring the Brits would turn out bad in the long run

• In the 1800s, improved technology would prove disastrous for the Chinese.

The Koreans

• Had advanced knowledge of the West from the Arab traders and their own travels– Japan to the Mediterranean Sea

• Continually attacked by the Japanese and Chinese– Caused ruin in Korea– Adopted “isolation” as their policy– No one allowed in or out.

• A vast, wonderful age for Korean arts and literature.

Japan• Japan tried to work with

the Westerners• Their home government

was in turmoil.• The Western firepower

helped sort out problems.

• Many became Christian• This threatened to

leaders (the shoguns)so they threw out the missionaries and persecuted the Japanese/ChristiansTokugawa

Shogun

Mid-1600s• The Tokugawa Shoguns turned

against the Westerners completely. • Threw them out and forbade

shipbuilding in Japan.• Only Dutch allowed in a couple of

times a year. (to Nagasaki)• Stayed isolated for 200 years but

allowed Japanese culture to flourish.

• Edo (Tokyo) became larger than Paris or London!
