The Manchus

• The Ming (old)dynasty was failing• The Manchus came from the NE—

busted through the Great Wall and set up their own capital (Beijing) and dynasty—Qing

• Were positive leaders—taking the best, working with the locals.

• Great expansion from 1660-1800.• Economy expanded (American crops)• Population grew• Trade expanded

• Continually attacked by the Japanese and Chinese– Caused ruin in Korea– Adopted “isolation” as their policy– No one allowed in or out.

• A vast, wonderful age for Korean arts and literature.

against the Westerners completely. • Threw them out and forbade

shipbuilding in Japan.• Only Dutch allowed in a couple of

times a year. (to Nagasaki)• Stayed isolated for 200 years but

allowed Japanese culture to flourish.
