Walker School Tradition & Something NewOn a recent Friday morning, we hosted a ‘Day of Community Service’ for The Walker School sophomore class. This program is an annual tradition for the school and for at least the last 8 years, they have chosen to come to Kennesaw Mountain, where we planned a work day that suited their need to learn about community service and be beneficial to the park.

After greeting the students and congratulating them on the impressive new entrance which has just been completed at their school, we gave them a brief history of our club and our efforts to help the park and the park staff. The club volunteers, such as these students, help with the job of keeping the facilities and grounds and miles of trails in good and safe condi t ion. This enhances the publ ic ’s access to and enjoyment of the historic places within the battlefield park we are all trying to preserve, maintain and learn about.

With a group of some 100, we headed off to begin the 24 Gun Trail, a newly authorized trail which branches off the existing Environmental Trail. Everyone carried a tool and they worked as teams to perform a rough clearing of the trai l corridor to Old Mountain Road. The work also included building two temporary bridges which crossed over dry, rain runoff, ditches. The work went extremely well. The only hitch was the encounter with a yellow jackets’ nest. The inhabitants didn’t like being disturbed so a good number of us got a sting or two. After a couple of hours’ work, the trail took shape and is ready for future fine tuning. The students, lead by club crew leaders and school staff, did an excellent job of staying within the designated trail width and direction.

After the trail work, Walker treated everyone to a picnic and the club thanked them for the picnic and the work they did. Many will enjoy this new trail, which has been long anticipated, and the Walker Sophomore Class can be proud of what they contributed.

We look forward to Walker School Sophomore class returning next year. Our thanks to Mr. Thomas Cooper for getting all the students and escorts enthused about volunteering at Kennesaw Mountain and, as always, special thanks to our crew leaders and trail ambassadors: Anne, David, Cameron, Larry, Lucy, Geoff, Harry, Jay, Fred, Donald and Richard for their help in making this a memorable and successful day.

“Volunteers, Schools and Buses-August 2013 Trail Day”I had a feeling it would be a big trail day. Everything was planned out except, at the last minute, a piece of equipment was not available and a slight change had to be made. The one thing that did work out well was that everyone who came had a tool to work with - and there were over a hundred volunteers! People started coming a little after 8 am, then a larger group of NJROTC students from Kennesaw Mountain High and Allatoona High arrived. We had a quick talk about the work and crews were dispatched to work on Old John Ward Road, the Assault Trail, West Kolb Farm Trail and the Ward Creek turnpike. There were five work areas and all the crew leaders did an outstanding job of quickly getting everyone to the work sites. Shortly after the volunteers started working, some 45 GA State University student resident assistants arrived by bus. They got a quick intro to the park, a description of the work and how to use the tools, and were broken into teams

and went off to join groups already at work.Park visitors passing by were amazed to see so many people working together on the trails. Equipment was moving about and material was distributed in a manner that would make even an experienced road crew proud. Remarkable improvements were made on the West Kolb Farm trail and the southern end of the Ward Creek turnpike bridge trail. The road trail is now pretty much complete with fill, which will make it easier for the visitors and their supplies to be transported in the buildup for next year’s 150th anniversary. The Assault trail is in much better condition and will now be able to handle the number of people doing work to complete the new bypass trail. The work on Kolb Farm trail has repaired a section that was gorged and washed out to the point that going through the area was risky, and the fill that was added to the trail beyond the bridge built up the trail to its original height.Again we experienced favorable weather for our trail day. It was a little humid and warm, but thankfully water was on hand and more was brought as needed. Everyone had an enjoyable time and the compliments for our work were many and are still being received. Thanks to all the individuals, groups and schools that helped us in August. Needless to say, we needed you all. Thank you crew leaders for managing and teaching. And special thanks to Larry, Harry, Geoff, Ricky and AJ for their extra effort in setting up and working extra hard to get the job done. Also, our always present Trai l Ambassadors did an extraordinary job in manning our makeshift field post, checking in people, directing visitors around the work areas, handing out snacks and water and locating shady places for volunteers to take a break and have some cordial conversation with our club members and other volunteers. Good show!Great day, great job, great people- it was a wonderful day in August!

BOOK REPORTUNDER THE SHADOW OF A GRIM AND

SILENT KENNESAWLetters from the Kennesaw Mountain Battle

LinesEdited by Brad QuinlinReviewed by Bill Gurry

Local author, researcher, genealogist, historian, reenactor, tour guide, and Notre Dame fan (nobody’s

perfect), Brad Quinlin is probably well known to many readers of this newsletter. Brad is known for his many, many, many, many, many hours of research at the National Archives in Washington, DC looking for Civil War soldiers, their families, and their descendants. For example, thanks to Brad, the Unknown Soldier buried just south of Cheatham Hill along the Unknown Soldier trail is no longer unknown.

In his tours and writings, Brad’s forte is emotionally connecting you, the tourist or reader, to a soldier through

a letter, an artifact, a gravestone, a story, and/or the blood in the soil where you stand. Under The Shadow Of A Grim And Silent Kennesaw is written in that vein. It includes 32 letters written by soldiers in or around the Park about their experiences (plus one from Spotsylvania, Virginia). The reader is directed to one of the six parking lots in the park (quick – name them) to get the reader to the general area where the letter was likely written. A one sentence biography or epilogue for most of the writers is included.

As an example, a short excerpt from a letter written by Walter Clark of the 26th Georgia on June 29th, two days

after the Federal attacks on June 27, reads in part: “Few scenes in a soldier’s life are touched with a sadder interest than first roll call after battle… The voices of twenty-two of those who had so promptly answered the call of duty a few hours before were hushed and silent when their names were called.”

If you haven’t done so, make it a point to join one of Brad’s fascinating tours of the Marietta National Cemetery.

Brad has a booklet on the Cemetery entitled Rest Brave Comrades, Your Work is Done. Brad is scheduled to speak to the Atlanta Civil War Roundtable on May 13, 2014.

Under the Shadow runs 45 pages and is for sale in the Visitor Center book store. Brad also has a web site

easily found that might help you line up a tour.

We Want You!Do you enjoy walking the trails of Kennesaw Mountain, but don’t have the time/ability to come to our workdays on the second Saturday of the Month? Join our “other” volunteers by walking the trails periodically and making note of problems, and helping others along the trail. Contact David Strand (at [email protected]) and become a Trail Ambassador. Enjoy the great outdoors, offer a helping hand, and make the trails at Kennesaw Mountain more enjoyable for others!

I had the opportunity to just this last month – taking a leisurely “walk in the Park” and observing trail issues, helping others with directions and just enjoying a nice day outdoors.

Take the time to reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers who fought here 149 years ago. You’ll be glad you did!

Mark Your Calendars!Upcoming Work Day Schedule: Our trail work days are open to the public on the 2nd Saturday of each month and are a wonderful way to get outside & enjoy nature while helping preserve the national park for future visitors. We will meet at 8:30 am at the new parking lot, .2 miles north of the Visitor Center on Old 41 and usually are finished by 1:00 p.m. Activities usually include the use of shovels, rakes, picks, and other tools to fix erosion problems on the 20+ mile trail system. Please do not wear open-toed shoes & long pants are recommended. As winter months approach, weather conditions can change quickly. We value our volunteers’ health, comfort and safety so to promote safer work conditions, we’ll cancel work days if the temperature is below 40 degrees and/or there’s a high probability of precipitation. If we must cancel a workday, we’ll post an announcement on the front page of the KMTC website at: www.kennesawmountaintrailclub.org If your school, church, business, or community organization would like to schedule a special work day as a team building or public service activity, e-mail us at [email protected] at least 4 weeks in advance. Trail work can be performed any day of the week. We work closely with the Park Service and assist the park staff by providing critically needed volunteer effort to install signs, build bridges, and maintain the 20+ miles of trails. Since our beginning in 2002, the Trail Club has donated over 25,000 volunteer hours to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

We hope to see you at a work day soon!

So, You Enjoy Working In The Park....We have a never-ending list of projects! We also have a never-ending need of Crew Leaders. So, if you have worked with us over the last months/years, and would like to take on a little more, see Doug, or any of the volunteers during the work day, or contact him via e-mail ([email protected]) to let him know your interest. We’ll be conducting another Crew Leader course in the coming months to help prepare you for the role of Crew Leader. You’ll then be in charge of various projects on our Work Days. And as a reminder, the more Crew Leaders we have, the easier the workload - many hands make short work of a project. And with lots of Crew Leaders, we have a larger pool of volunteers, such that we will have a lighter workload on us all. And there is this - you’ll be part of a great group of folks who want the Park Visitors have great experience, you’ll be providing them a safer environment, and lastly, you’ll have an opportunity to be part of the overall planning process in concert with the National Park Service.

Thanks, Allatoona HS NJROTC!I had an especially fantastic group working on the West Kolb Trail on Saturday. Several of the volunteers were from a High School Naval ROTC.They showed great work ethic through out the morning. As the quitting time approached, we were discussing moving the remaining mulch. Without a request, they decided among themselves to remain longer to help spread the remaining mulch and line the path with rocks.Their extra effort greatly contributed to leaving the area looking finished rather than an ongoing project.

It’s All In The Prep! This Saturday, we’re going to be working on the Assault Trail. Only one problem. We’ll be doing bridge work this weekend. Alas, to do bridge work, the footings have to done. Only problem is, the footings have to have to be ready! So, this past week, a number of us spent time in prep! That’s right, pouring the footings, so that we could complete the project this coming weekend. And it wasn’t just about pouring the footings. Equipment had to be obtained, the plans gone over with the Park Staff, site prep, the actual building of the forms, bringing the equipment in, and returning it, along with site clean-up. So, when you come this Saturday, we’ll have footings for two bridges ready! Then, all we have to do is build the bridges! (Right!)Hope to see you all there!

Civil War October, 1863Overview: Despite the CSA defeat at Gettysburg, Lee remained on the offensive. In September he sent Longstreet’s Corps by rail to help defeat the Union at Chickamauga. In October he went on the offensive in the Bristoe Station Campaign that fizzled because of A. P. Hill’s blundering.

Oct 5 Torpedo attack on USS New Ironsides outside Charleston Harbor, South Carolina

Oct 9 Bristoe Station Campaign begins in Virginia: The Union army was led by Maj. Gen. George G. Meade; the Confederates by General Robert E. Lee. Lee had stolen a march, passing around Cedar Mountain, the site of a battle in 1862. This forced Meade to retreat toward Centreville. By withdrawing, Meade prevented Lee from falling on an exposed flank of the Army of the Potomac. Maj. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren, commanding II Corps in Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock’s absence, was following V Corps on this retreat. On October 13, the II Corps had an encounter with Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry near Auburn, Virginia, the First Battle of Auburn, nicknamed “Coffee Hill.” (Confederate shells interrupted Federals who were boiling coffee.) Warren had to push Stuart aside and, at the same time, retreat before the advance of the Confederate corps of Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell. On October 14, as Warren moved toward Bristoe Station, Stuart’s cavalry harassed the rear guard at the Second Battle of Auburn.

Oct 14 Battle of Bristoe Station, Virginia: Lt. Gen. A. P. Hill, leading the Confederate Third Corps, was advancing on Ewell’s left. He reached Bristoe Station on October 14. Hill tried to harass the rearguard of V Corps just across Broad Run, but he missed the presence of II Corps just coming up from Auburn. Seeing Heth’s advance, Warren rapidly deployed his forces behind an embankment of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad near Bristoe Station. The result was a powerful ambush as Hill’s corps moved to attack the Federal rear guard across Broad Run.

Geology and the War in Georgia Kennesaw, GA: On Monday, September 23, 2013, presenters William Witherspoon and Pamela J.W. Gore will share information on how the geology of the area between Chattanooga and Atlanta influenced the military campaigns of 1863 and 1864. Geologist and Roadside Geology of Georgia co-author Dr. Bill Witherspoon of Atlanta’s Fernbank Science Center explains why a tunnel existed at Tunnel Hill and a deep rail cut at Allatoona Pass, why the narrow ridges from Chattanooga to Dalton give way to less defensible low hills southward to Cartersville, and why Kennesaw Mountain stands as the last barrier north of the Chattahoochee River. Learn the origin of local natural resources that supported the Confederate war effort, such as saltpeter, iron, and waterpower.

Copies of Roadside Geology of Georgia will be sold, and a book signing will follow the talk. The program takes place at the Battlefield’s Visitor Center at 7 pm and is free and open to the public. For more information on this or any of Kennesaw Mountain’s programs, please call 770-427-4686 x 0 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
