January was an exhausting month for me. I was ill with the flu and then worked hard to meet deadlines for year-end taxes, reports, meetings and mailings. As my health returned and each of those responsibilities were completed, I felt a great sense of relief and accomplishment. My desk is still recovering from the increased activity - much like the aftermath of a tornado. But, as the piles and files find their resting places in the trash or the drawers, the empty spaces on my desk whisper words of encouragement... and I find the strength to tackle the next task with a renewed sense of purpose. MITCH & CARYL UPDATE

Mitch and I have been in the USA since December 5.  We celebrated Luke’s graduation in Tampa from the University of South Florida with a degree in English literature. Josh, Amy, Linnea, Lucia and the Ryan grandparents all attended. We then spent Christmas in Arkansas seeing family and friends. January was our month to raise funds for Earth Mission. We met many old friends and new, traveling to several parts of Arkansas, as well as Austin, Wimberely, and San Antonio TX, Washington D.C., Bristol TN/VA, and Louisville KY. I had asked several people to pray for us; for travel, for good contacts, and for me, specifically, as I find all the social interactions tiring - even though everyone is SO interesting!

For me, being “on” all the time uses a lot of energy. God provided for all our needs and gave me the strength and joy that I needed. It is a privilege to be able to do this work. “God is able to make all grace come in abundance to you, so that you may always have complete sufficiency in everything, and have an abundance for every good work and act of charity.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

COMPLETION OF WATER FILTER PROJECT

Last year, OnetoAnother conducted a study on the status of drinking water in different areas across Multan city.  Samples of tap water were taken and sent for testing by the WASA (Water and Sanitation Authority).  In all of the areas tested, the results showed chemical and contaminate levels to be outside the range of safe drinking water. The water being supplied to each of these communities is not only unsafe for drinking purposes, but even for boiling or home filters.

Even the filtration plants installed by the government have not been taken care of and are very thinly spread across the city. Community members have to travel far on foot or motorcycle in order to fill heavy water bottles for drinking. Purchasing filtered water is expensive. There is also a common occurrence of underground sewerage and water pipelines bursting.  This mixes the pure and contaminated water which the citizens drink unknowingly and then become sick with hazardous diseases.

A small room was built to house the filtration plant with a tiled area with taps for the filling of bottles.  The water pump was also installed in the room which needs electricity for usage.  The electricity connection and a small piece of land for the building were donated from the community members. (For example, Rufan Colony has used an outside corner of the Christian School compound.) Community members can now fill drinking water bottles locally and free of charge.   There is the need across the city of Multan for more water filtration plants. This project is fairly inexpensive, with swift completion. We would like to request one-time donors to consider this project.  The benefits of having readily available clean water are far-reaching for the long term health of these communities.

In November and December 2016, OnetoAnother installed water filtration plants in three Christian communities in Multan City: Louis Colony = 1,200 People Rufan Colony = 900 People Hameed Town = 300 People (These amounts are calculated by estimating that an average family has six members)

COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION PHASE OF VICTORIA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

We are excited to write that the construction phase of the VMH (Victoria Memorial Hospital) is now complete. The hospital building, staff houses and also boundary walls are now completed. Interior tile work, flooring, electrical and bathroom fixtures and paint work have also been completed. We now move on to the phase of purchase and installation of medical supplies and equipment. We are in communication with overseas donors for importing second-hand equipment and are also working with local suppliers.  This next stage is a big endeavor and we request your prayers. Even at this early stage we also ask your prayers for future staff. We will be sending out specific campaigns and requests in regards to the future plans for the VMH in the coming months.

CHRISTMAS SEASON

Christmas this year was a season busy with weddings and engagements for the LaalDin family personally.

As such, we found ourselves with limited time to host any OnetoAnother Christmas programs but we were able to hold one dinner for our Cricket Youth. This was again a great time to show these young, nominal Christians the true meaning and message of Christmas.

We enjoyed spending time with our extended family and the celebration of three engagements brought with it much joy.

MICROSCOPE CLASS AT THE TRAD CLINIC

Keerati, one of our EMA scholarship students, recently gave a lecture on microscopic urinalysis to our second year students in Kyaukkyi, Myanmar. A microscopic urinalysis is the study of a urine sample under a microscope. This training will help our students understand when to run this test and what to look for under the microscope. After the lecture, the students got to practice by sampling their own urine! (You can check a video of the students trying to figure out the

microscope components on Earth Mission Asia’s facebook page.)

BWAE HTEE KHU: “If I get more education and knowledge about healthcare, I will be able to help my family, my village and my local clinic.” “I was born in Der Doh village where I lived with my parents and five siblings. After finishing grade 4 in my village, I went to stay with my aunt in Taungoo city to study grade 5 until grade 9. Halfway through grade 9, I felt like I couldn’t catch up with my studies and I decided to go back to help my parents.

Therefore, at 15 years old, I went back home and spent the next two years harvesting beetle nut and cardamom in the hills. At 17, I became a community helper in my village for 8 months. While I was working, I learned about a medical training program and I really wanted to go. [...]”* - Bwae Htee Khu is 19 years old and comes from Der Doh village, Taungoo district, (K2) Karen State, Myanmar. She’s one of the four girls who recently started our second-year Health Practitioner Program. * To read more about Bwae Htee Khu, go to Earth Mission’s website.

BACK TO SCHOOL AT THE TRAD CLINIC!

Our students just started their second year of training in our TRAD clinic, located in Kyaukkyi, Myanmar. They are getting to know our staff, volunteers and the environment where they will be staying for the next four years of training. This week, the students continued their anatomy, physiology and medical math classes. We would like to wish them good success for this New Year!
