whether he took both. Having the same he could have had a 2nd wife,

SARAH, or a third, for all we know.

At last he had a son 1

John (2), b. 1682. This chap, I think, went to Killingly, Ct.;

he could hardly m. Sarah ~exter in 1697, at 15 yrs. His father

disinherited him for disobedience.

Asa Hutchinson ~rown, son o£ Ebenezer Brown and Emma Cross o£

Danvers, was born about 1797. He marr!ed Amanda ~arker, daughter

o£ Aaron Parker o£ Cavendish, Vt., and G.-daughter o£ Aaron rarker

o£ Westford. Asa and Amanda lived in a house in Ballardvale built

by Charles French. They had no children.

Joseph Brown who came in 1842 from Main Village, N.H. was a

brother to Asa. Joseph liked melons first rate and Marland had a

garden near. During melon time, so the neighbors said, Brown used

to set his table in an upstairs room , lest neighbors be inquisitive. /LUCY

EdWard. Brown of Ipswich, wife Faith, was a comtemporary of

William Bartholomew, of Ipswich, who cl.cied 1681 in Charlestown.

The Will of Edward Browne, 1659, mentions FAITH, h~s wife,a

-9-

son THOMAS, deceased, whose legacy from an Aunt Watson in

England, was to be passed to the brother JOSEPH, then a minor.

Joseph was also to enjoy the use of land which Edward had bought

of 1I Brother " Bartholomew. A son JOHN and daughters unnamed

in detail, are mentioned, and remembered.

IVho was Bartholomew? 'lIas he brother to Edward? Did the two

marry sisters or did FAITH belong to the Bartholomew family! Or

did Vlilliam marl'Y Brown's sister, or were the men step-brothers,

or half-brothers, or did a child of Barhholomew marry a child

of Brownf Which in the old days brought the parents into close

relationshipf. and in some cases proved to be the cause of the

term used.

Was the FAITH BROWN who married Daniel Warren in 1660, widow

or daughter of Edward ?Was John Brown of Heading Hill, who married

Elizabeth Osgood in Andover, 1659, son of the above Edlt/ard ?

The similarity of names suggests a relationship between the

family of old Nicholas Brown and Edward Brown, whose children moved

back and forth between Ips',rich and Reading. Perhaps -~dward of

England, husband of Jane Side, had two sons, Nicholas and Edward,

in New England.

Should be glad to give more place to the Andover pe~igrees of

the only BROWN line appearing here early.

C.H.A.

John (1) Brown, born 1595, came to Ipswich in 1641. He m.

Elizabeth. Very likely this one is confused with John arovrn of

Hampton, b. 1598, who may have been born in London.

One John Brown, a tailor, b. 1611 came from Ess.x, near

Chelmsford, Eng. in 1638. His wife was Sarah--f,

Somebody in the Transcript, 1900 , in II Gibbs' (Jen ." says : A NiCholas

Brown, wife Jane, had a bronze tablet in a church at r.I'ysoe, Warwick,

Robert Gibbs of HUntington, Eng., (who was~born in 1528- alive 1584- )

and wife i~largery Prideaux. That Jane married Nicholas Hrown of Tysoe

in Warwick. The writer wondered if said Nicholas was the father of

Edward Hrown and g. father to old Nick o~ Reading.

Nicholas, by all accounts, was here sometime between 1630-1637,

and got original grants with possession, and in 1638 was a ~anded

proprietor. Had a wife, l!;lizabeth--·- who apljearS to have been alive

in 1673 when he died.
