Babies learn how to communicate from birth. They progress from simply crying and cooing, to speaking in phrases, and eventually to making short sentences as they move into toddlerhood. Caregivers of infants are among their first teachers and can help babies devel-op solid language skills through talking, singing, playing, and read-ing together. Communication through play is the key to developing both a loving relationship and a budding reader. Below are a few ideas to encourage babies to grow up with a love of reading and writing. • Talk about his world. Babies respond best to adults who make eye

contact with them, touch them, and talk in a lively way about the world around them. When you talk, you teach them new words while showing the rhythms and patterns of language.

• Talk back when babies talk to you. When you take turns talking with a baby, you encourage her to speak more. Even if she is not yet speaking words you can still take turns by listening to the sounds she makes, making the same noise, and letting her talk back.

• Play games to teach words. Babies love to connect with the adults in their lives through playing simple games. When you play “Where’s your nose?” or sing songs with finger plays like “The Wheels on the Bus,” you actually teach new words and help her practice speaking.

Healthy Child Care is Coming to Mobile & Washington Counties!Healthy Child Care Alabama is a program that supports people who take care of other people’s children—whether it is in a child care center or day care home, or through family, friend, or neighbor care. The program’s purpose is to improve the health and safety of children in child care through partnership with health professionals, child care providers, and families.

Healthy Child Care Alabama can provide health and safety programs for the staff of both licensed and legally exempt child care programs. All services are provided free of charge, includ-ing CPR and First Aid classes. These educational sessions may be conducted on site at the child care center or home and may include programs for the children in the program, as well as their parents. As well, the nurse consultant can provide telephone consultation on health and safety concerns.

Healthy Child Care Alabama is expanding statewide and will have a nurse consultant serving Mobile and Washington Coun-ties in January 2015. The nurse consultant’s name and contact information will be available on the Contact Us page at www.adph.org/hcca in January.
