Hello!

The snow will be blowing at our door step and the frost biting at our noses as our new winter classes in Early Childhood Family Education begin in January. ECFE is just the place to be with your young children when you want a cozy, warm spot to spend quality time together.

Take a look at the classes we offer to see what meets your families’ needs. Saturday Run and Reads will begin in January at our Early Childhood Center—Colts Academy in St. Joseph. We offer gym and motor room time, reading with play time and a snack for all the children. Every child who attends receives a free book. What a great way to spend a Saturday morning out of the cold weather!

Welcome to ECFEEarly Childhood Family Education (ECFE) believes that parents are the child’s first and most important teacher. We provide quality learning opportunities and resources for parents and their children from birth to kindergarten entry. Parents and children attend ECFE class together. If ECFE is new to you, we invite you to arrange a visit/tour of our Early Childhood Center. A typical ECFE class includes:

GROWING TOGETHER: For You and Your ChildPlay with your child as he or she explores and learns in a play environment. Grow together through art, music, story books and other age-appropriate toys and activities.

GROWING INDEPENDENTLY: For Your ChildDuring their play and snack time, the early childhood educator will guide children as they interact with others and as they continue to develop positive attitudes about themselves.

GROWING CONFIDENTLY: For YouJoin other parents, in an informal setting, for discussion led by a licensed parent educator. Parents have the opportunity to share ideas and feel encouraged with the support of others.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to create a safe and caring climate and culture in which we prepare, engage, educate, empower and inspire all learners in partnership with their surrounding community to be successful in today’s and tomorrow’s society.

“Research has shown that fathers, no matter what their income or cultural background, can play a critical role in their children’s education. When fathers are involved, their children learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behavior. Even when fathers do not share a home with their children, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.”

Encourage your child to listen to and use language to express ideas.

Take time each day to listen to and talk with your child.

While traveling together • Turn off the radio, CD or DVD player in your car as you and your child are going places together. • Encourage your child to talk with you about where you are going and what might happen when you get there. • Invite your child to tell you something he or she enjoyed doing that day.

At home together • Turn off the TV or computer and spend a few minutes talking with your child about things which interest him or her. • Talk with your child about some things each of you did that day

Involve your child in activities which require listening and following directions.

Give your child directions that involve two steps. Here are some examples: • Take off your shoes and put them in the closet. • Pick up your plate and put it in the sink. • Hop to the door and open it.

Give your child an object such as a small ball or a bean bag. Ask your child to do certain things with the object. Here are some examples: • Put the ball under your chin. • Put the ball up in the air and then down on the floor. • Let your child tell you some things to do with the ball. Encourage him or her to use words such as under, over, behind, in front of, beside, on top of, etc.

Use pictures to encourage your child to express ideas.

Collect magazine pictures which show action. • Pictures of children playing together, a family in a car or a team playing a sport, for example. • Let your child look at the pictures one at a time. Ask your child to tell you what he or she thinks is happening in each picture.

Read or tell stories which have characters of different sizes.

Read or tell the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. • Have your child show you the pictures of the little Billy Goat, the middle Billy Goat and the big Billy Goat. • Suggest that your child draw pictures of the three Billy Goats Gruff. Notice if he or she draws 3 sizes of goats.

Early Childhood Screening is a free check of how your 3-year-old is growing, developing and learning. The screening includes a developmental assessment, vision and hearing testing, height and weight measurement and an immunization and health history review.

The purpose of this FREE screening is to identify children who may need additional time and experiences to be ready for school. The sooner we get started, the more likely your child will begin school with the necessary skills to succeed.
