Using the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s extensive experience working in schools (Children Ahead, Connect, eSmart and Better Buddies), TraCS helps educators to understand specific behavioural challenges, including problems with self-regulation, impulse control and reactivity – and how to best respond and support the child. TraCS will support early childhood staff in: understanding and working with children whose lives are affected by trauma providing safe and supportive learning environments for traumatised children to engage and improve their readiness for school continuously planning, implementing, analysing and reviewing their interactions and plans with children establishing strategies for children to create connections and resolve conflict developing plans to help children progress their pro-social skills including managing emotions and social regulation managing their own emotional responses to help maintain a peaceful learning space providing a forum to debrief from difficult interactions with children or parents, reducing the rate of burnout and isolation. Our programs are in one third of Australian schools and more than 75% of Australian public libraries. We also support 10,000 children in refuges or foster homes across the country every year. Our vision is that every child will live in a safe and supportive environment. OUR HISTORY The Alannah & Madeline Foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on 28 April 1996. OUR BELIEFS We believe that no child should feel unsafe or be threatened with violence. We believe that confident, secure, resilient and inspired young people our our hope for the future. We have made a great difference since inception and have assisted more than 2 million children. But we can - and we will - do more. SERVICES AVAILABLEThis clinical support and advice is provided through the following services (which are also offered separately):

Outreach reflective practice – individual educators1:1 supportive space for educators to reflect upon, analyse and evaluate observations, experiences and behaviours to inform practice and interventions with children and families.

Outreach reflective practice – teamsAs above, but also providing a supportive space for groups of educators and a forum to share ideas and struggles in managing complex behaviours.

Site-based debriefing/defusing service Highly skilled debriefing consultants supporting individuals or teams after traumatic events that have significantly impacted staff, such as the death of a child within the service or an episode of significant violence.

Behaviour management consultancy (outreach) – individual children

Trauma-informed advice supporting educators with strategies to manage particular behaviour/s that promote connection, build pro-social behaviours and defuse conflict. This can include assessment of children with targeted strategies to manage their individual needs.

Behaviour management consultancy – group of childrenThrough discussions with educators and assessment of children, consultants work with staff to develop and implement strategies that promote pro-social skills, co-operation and creation of safe learning spaces – and make recommendations regarding the management of complex behaviours.

Trauma information service Providing psycho-education to staff about the impact of trauma on a child’s health and wellbeing through the provision of training, information and resources.

Referral supportIdentifying appropriate services for families where community supports are required, including co-ordination of family or professional meetings and making of referrals.

The expert practitioners from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s TraCS program will work with early childhood centres and kindergartens initially in Victoria under the School Readiness Funding Program.
