Resource Spotlight : Crosslines Crosslines is the oldest and largest food pantry in Greene County, established in 1969 and today serving more than 71,000 people annually. Crosslines provides support through food assistance, hygiene items, and clothing vouchers. They also offer referral services and some case management services. The food assistance program features a "client-choice" model different from most food pantries. Each family is partnered with a volunteer "shopper helper" to take them through the grocery store style pantry to choose their food. This allows families to select items that best fit their tastes and dietary restrictions. Crosslines has two locations to serve the community: their primary location is at 615 N. Glenstone and a satellite location, called Crosslines @ The DC is located at 829 W. Atlantic, inside the Springfield Dream Center. The primary location operates Monday through Friday from 9 am to 1:45 pm and offers pantry staples as well as a "Nutritious & Delicious" section for those with dietary restrictions due to chronic illness and USDA Foods (a.k.a. "commodities"). Crosslines @ The DC operates Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm and on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 pm, offering pantry staples items. Conscious Discipline Continued...The Survival State: Am I Safe?Last month we introduced the three Brain States of Conscious Discipline, the Survival, the Emotional and the Executive State. This month we will focus on the Survival State. The Survival State is a reactive state that is activated when we feel threatened. This threat can be real or imagined. The primary concern in this brain state is self-defense, asking, "Am I safe?" When we feel unsafe our internal alarm system is set off and we choose one of three ways to respond: fight (hit, push, scream, bite, tantrums,), flight (withdraw, run away, hide) or freeze (surrender, comply, give in or give up). These are unconscious and automatic responses and it puts the body into a high state of alertness. Conscious Discipline uses the metaphor of a wolf to represent the internal alarm system. When the wolf, or perceived threat, comes our internal alarm goes off. When our internal alarm goes off our arousal system is set off. Conscious Discipline has a metaphor for this too, a toy hand clacker. Children, and adults for that matter, cannot think about anything else at this moment while in the survival state. Trying to get a child to say they are sorry or to figure out a solution to a problem can't happen when their internal hand clacker is going off and they feel threatened. The goal is to calm the arousal system and move out of the Survival State. To learn more visit Conscious Discipline at: www.consciousdiscipline.com

The Skill of Composure: Breathing TechniquesWithin each Brain State, Conscious Discipline gives us a set of skills to help us calm and focus. The most important skill we can teach children is the ability to calm themselves when they are upset and in their Survival Brain State. One way to do this is through the Skill of Composure. As parents, our internal state helps to regulate our children's internal state. When our clacker is clacking so is our children's. It is important for caregivers to practice the Skill of Composure and then teach it to their children. One way to do this through S.T.A.R.breathing. Smile, Take a deep breath And Relax. Sometimes it helps to visualize smelling a flower when taking a deep breath and then blowing out a birthday candle when exhaling and relaxing. STAR breathing helps us to take a moment and pause before we say or do something, to regain our composure. Practice doing this three times and notice how your body feels more calm and relaxed. Other breathing strategies include Drain, Balloon and Pretzel.

The Skill of Composure: The Safe PlaceThe Safe Place is place where children can go to learn self-regulation and calming. It is not a time-out area or punishment but rather a place where they can practice their calming breathing techniques. Remember children are sub-consciously asking themselves in the Survival State if they are safe. Creating a Safe Place helps the child to calm that internal clacker and self-regulate. The Safe Place will change with age. It starts in the womb, then to the parent's lap and then to an external place at home like an area in a room. For infants and toddlers, caregivers can hold the child in their lap and practice their breathing techniques while saying to the child, "You are safe. Breathe with me." For older children caregivers can direct them to the Safe Place and provide pictures of the different breathing strategies. Children can choose the breathing technique that they like best.
