The Florida State University College of Education

Program Overview

Admission Requirements

The Undergraduate Program in Early Childhood Education is designed to provide students with both the academic foundation and the preschool/public school experience necessary to become a successful beginning teacher of children age three through grade three. The program is continuously refined to meet and exceed the changing expectations of the Florida Department of Education and other professional organizations. The Early Childhood Undergraduate Program is a model Service-learning program in teacher education for the state of Florida.

Career Opportunities Graduates of the undergraduate program will be certified to teach pre-kindergarten through grade three in the state of Florida. Some examples of the broad range of professional roles available to those pursuing graduate degrees in early childhood education include serving as master classroom teachers, college or university faculty, staff specialists in public or private school systems, and in governmental or professional organizations.

The undergraduate program in early childhood education is recognized for the quality and preparation of their graduates. Because of the high demand for admission to the program, the State Board of Regents awarded the School of Teacher Education limited enrollment status.

Only a limited number of students will be admitted to the programs during each admission cycle to guarantee the continuation of a high level of quality in teaching, field experiences, and internship placements. Please note that admission to The Florida State University does not automatically make a student eligible for admission to early childhood education programs.

Students are required to take and pass all sections of the General Knowledge portion of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) before applying to the program. Please note that because of the limited enrollment classification of the program, not all qualified students are admitted.

The applications of students who otherwise meet all minimum admission requirements are due March 1st for fall admission.

Minimum requirements:• 2.5 GPA• passing the General Knowledge portion of the FTCE• reporting scores on the SAT/ACT

Minimum requirements will be considered in addition to:• an acceptable essay• a record of work with children

All information submitted will be considered in making admissions decisions. Applications of students who do not meet the minimum admission requirements set by the State of Florida for Teacher Education will be denied.
