Welcome to the EAPRIL 2014 Conference and its first L&D Programme
EAPRIL, the European Office of Cyprus and the University of Cyprus are very happy to welcome all of you to Cyprus for the 9th EAPRIL Conference and for the first edition of our L&D programme. On the wonderful island where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was born, all those involved in organisational learning research and practice come together for an inspiring 1,5 days of dissemination and networking activities. More specifically, we are welcomed by the City of Nicosia, a modern city with a rich history. The Local Organising Committee, in cooperation with the Hilton Cyprus Hotel, has done an amazing job in organising the conference. Their support and organisational work have been very much appreciated by EAPRIL. The next 1,5 days will be dedicated to research by and for practitioners in the field of Learning and Development. With special thanks to all of you, our delegates, EAPRIL has managed to create an interesting conference programme with plenty of interesting presentations, sessions, and networking activities. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy your first EAPRIL experience and that you will be able to return home with plenty of inspiration to improve your practice and research activities. Given the fact that research and innovation are the key pathways to a higher competitiveness of European companies, the EAPRIL Association strives to close the gap between academic research and practitioners in the broad field of Learning & Development. While EAPRIL has already invested in creating such a platform for Learning & Development in Professional Practice and Corporate Organisations, with varying degrees of success, we are happy with the support of the former ETDF association to (re-‐)launch their community activity. The European Training and Development Federation (ETDF) merged with EAPRIL in the beginning of 2014. ETDF was an umbrella organisation that linked 12 national associations of learning and development, and human resource development in Europe. With this merge, EAPRIL achieves the connection of the two ecologies of learning and development in its association. Next to our existing and well-‐grounded practice for Education, and Learning & Instruction, the second practice of Learning and Developmental issues in organisations will be strengthened in EAPRIL. This movement matches EAPRIL’s mission statement in which it is stated to bridge research and practice, both in education and professional practice. More specifically, EAPRIL ‘Learning & Development’ aims to enhance individual and organisational learning and to develop practice by narrowing down the gap between researchers doing research on L&D and practitioners in the field being confronted with diverse L&D tasks and challenges.
2
Topics that are trending in the field of L&D involve not only the detection of learning needs of employees and the measurement of quality and impact of learning at the workplace, but also the development and validation of systems for accreditation and evaluation of employees, and of various learning and training methodologies and technologies. A broad range of themes and L&D challenges is covered. EAPRIL distinguishes itself from other associations on many levels. EAPRIL is all about interaction. Various presentation formats are scheduled in the programme which are all considered to secure in-‐depth discussions and a high level of interaction. Also the social programme is carefully crafted to stimulate interaction. Reunite or meet new friends and colleagues on Monday evening and reflect on your interesting encounters of the first conference day during the conference reception. Furthermore, in-‐between conferences, EAPRIL aims to provide its members with research reports on various topics in the field of Learning & Development. Already in its first year of existence, this new European L&D network managed to create a European Learning Compass and a project on Informal Learning in cooperation with leading European Universities. The results will be presented during this first conference programme. All members will receive reports of these projects. Finally, EAPRIL aims to craft its conferences to match to the needs of the participants. The participants will be asked which challenges they feel are high on the agenda and to which questions they want to see an answer at next year’s conference. EAPRIL will do its best to come back one year later with results to these answers. As a result a very close interaction and cooperation with our members is aimed for. To guide you during your EAPRIL Conference Experience, EAPRIL and the Local Organising Committee have created this booklet which provides you with more information on the programme and activities planned. While in the first part more details on the programme and sessions can be found, practical information related to the conference venue, social programme and the city of Nicosia can be found in the second part of this booklet (i.e. the practical guide). With this booklet we hope to cover all your basic conference needs. 1. Welcome to the EAPRIL 2014 Conference ……………………………………………………………………..1

PLENARY SESSIONS
The EAPRIL Board is happy to invite you not only to the Opening Session on Tuesday morning (09:30) but also to the Plenary Closing Session on Wednesday (12:15). During the Opening Session the chair of EAPRIL, Prof. dr. Frank de Jong, and the EAPRIL Board Member who initiated this new L&D initiative Mr. Patrick Belpaire will welcome you to this first edition of the EAPRIL L&D Conference. They are happy to give you more information on what to expect during the upcoming sessions. During the Closing Plenary Session on Wednesday a discussion on ‘what’s next’ is organised. Based on your experiences during these 1,5 days and the results of the research projects set up by EAPRIL, the EAPRIL Board is happy to discuss with you, our delegates, the future steps to be taken within EAPRIL. Which research projects should we set up next year? Which challenges do we need to address? Which expectations do you have from EAPRIL, both with regard to next year’s conference and with regard to EARPIL as an association working for the European field of L&D? Afterwards, you are invited to enjoy lunch and to say goodbye to colleagues and friends. Finally, EAPRIL is happy to invite you to a Plenary session in which the first European Learning Compass will be presented, which is the first accomplishment of EAPRIL’s L&D sub programme. ‘The European Learning Compass’ was developed in cooperation with the School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University. This Project aimed at providing an overview of the existing learning analytics within Europe. Furthermore it was assessed whether data can be used to judge and compare the state of learning between companies and countries. This session will disentangle these European Learning Analytics. SPEED DATING
On Tuesday afternoon Speed Dating sessions will be organised. During the Speed Dating sessions participants are invited to get to know each other better. Rotating small face-‐to-‐face conversations of 5 minutes maximum are organised within each group. These Speed Dating sessions are a nice and informal introduction to colleagues who share similar interests and expertise. More time needed to get to know one another? The Conference Reception will follow the speed dating sessions, so perfect to continue your talks.

REGULAR SESSIONS
‘Interaction' is a keyword at the EAPRIL Conference. To stimulate this interaction various interactive presentation formats are incorporated in the programme. Each session in this programme book is marked with the abbreviation of the format that the session will follow. The presentation formats are:
- Present and Discuss Session – P&D sessions (60 minutes)
Two presentations are scheduled together in a 60-‐minutes session based on similarities in topic, methodology and/or objectives. Each presentation will involve a 15-‐minutes talk in which the presenter will present his/her research. The presenter will end his/her talk by presenting a clear question or statement related to the research to the audience. This question or statement will be the focus of discussion during the following 10 minutes. After all presenters have presented their work, a collective 15-‐minutes discussion is organised in which general questions, remarks and/or general conclusions are to be discussed.
- Practice and Research Dialogue Session (60 minutes)
In this format practice and research meet for an interesting discussion as both practitioners and researchers are involved in the organisation of this session. Bridging theory and practice can occur in many ways. For example, the practitioner could first present a case from practice, which will be subsequently linked to theory by the researcher. Another set-‐up could be that the researcher presents a general framework, which will be specified by the practitioner, i.e. how does this framework work in practice. Both the practitioner and researcher will get 15 minutes to present their work, as well as 10 minutes for questions and/or remarks related to their presentation. Afterwards, a discussion is organised about the tension/crossover between the presented theory and practice.
- Case Study (60 minutes)
In this format a L&D representative is invited to present a specific practice, case, challenge or problem from his/her L&D practice to the community. This case presentation will lead to an in-‐depth discussion with other practitioners who share similar or differing ideas or experiences, as well as with researchers who are invited to comment on these cases or problems from a research perspective. This session may even lead to thinking about joint research projects and plans in the near future to investigate this L&D case in-‐depth.

WHAT ?
‘The European Learning Compass’ was developed in cooperation with the School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University. This Project aimed at providing an overview of the existing learning analytics within Europe. Furthermore it was assessed whether data can be used to judge and compare the state of learning between companies and countries.
WHY?
EAPRIL wants to open the black box of learning analytics on a European level because practitioners want to have facts that are easy to comprehend and use in practice. Therefore an overview was aimed for as a first step to create a platform for knowledge about these benchmarking facts for all the L&D practices in Europe.
15
CONCLUSIONS?
Did you know that 52 learning analytics in the field of L&D in whole Europe are used to measure/talk about learning in organisations?
Did you know that 16 learning categories, as most important themes with which the L&D practice in Europe is occupied, can be identified, e.g. needs assessment, certification, L&D strategy?
Did you know that the learning industries’ market value in whole the World is estimated with 287 Billion dollar?
Did you know that The L&D expenditure in Europe is the second largest of the World?
Did you know that more and more European organisations are interested in Learning analytics and external benchmarking for learning?
SESSION?
In this plenary session all the interesting results of our extensive study will be presented and discussed in-‐depth. Furthermore, recently EAPRIL started the cooperation with the University of Leuven, Belgium, to disentangle the learning analytics for informal learning. The preliminary results will be also presented during this plenary session.
Our keynote speaker, Mr. Stefaan van Hooydonk, will shed a more critical light on the results. All participants are invited to join the discussion afterwards.
Interested in the project report? All conference participants and EAPRIL members will get a copy of this first European Learning Compass, unique in its kind. More information about the advantages as a member of EAPRIL? http:/www.eapril.org/Membership

Walking
The old city of Nicosia/Lefkosia
Do not forget to take a walk through Laiki Geitonia, where you have the opportunity to see some remarkable examples of traditional urban architecture as well as other small art workshops. In the same area, one will also encounter the Leventio Museum with its collections of architectural findings, medieval armours and other documentation of Nicosia’s evolution. Seek out Trypiotis Church that dates back to 1695, Phaneromeni Church and the Cross of Missirikos, an old Byzantine church with gothic Italian elements that was converted into Araplar Mosque in 1571. Also noteworthy is the Armenian Church and Monastery (Notre Dame de Tyre) that was originally a nunnery during the 13th century. This particular church also has architectural elements from the 14th century, since renovations taking place were never completed the Ottoman siege. The Church only took on its present form after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The Omerie Area lies at the heart of the inner wall city and includes important examples of urban architecture, including the notable landmarks Omerie Mosque and Baths. While you are in Laiki Geitonia, stop by the Nicosia Local Market which is located next to the Arts Centre and the old inns. This area once made up the socioeconomic centre of the inner – wall city and continues to be a meeting point for Nicosia’s multi-‐cultural citizens.

INTERESTING FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT NICOSIA / LEFKOSIA
70 centuries of culture
As one of Europe’s most ancient cities, Nicosia has been the capital of Cyprus for the past 1,000 years. The city however, dates back to the Bronze Age when it was a renown cultural and commercial centre.
The name Lefkosia most likely derived from “lefka” (λεύκα -‐ poplar), a possible reference to the trees that once lined the city. In ancient times, it was known by the name “Ledra” (Λήδρα).
The city flourished, as did the entire island, during the Byzantine Empire era, from the 4th until the beginning of the 12th century.
In 1191-‐1192, Cyprus was passed into the hands of Richard the Lionheart. It then passed down to the Lusignans (Franks) and later on the Venetians who repaired the city’s famous Walls. In 1571, the city came under Ottoman rule that lasted until 1878, when the Turkish flag was replaced by the British. In 1925, Cyprus was declared a British colony. After the fight for independence that lasted from 1955 – 1959, Cyprus was declared an independent state, and since 16 August 1960, Nicosia has been the capital of the island. As a result of the Turkish Invasion of the northern section of the island in 1974, Nicosia is today the last remaining divided capital of the European Union, of which Cyprus has been a member state since 2004.
With more than 228,000 inhabitants, seven municipalities and lying at the crossroads of three different continents, Nicosia is a cultural bridge between the past and present; the old, ancient town encircled by protective Venetian walls and the modern city with its contemporary architecture, shopping malls and stores. Old and New Town are linked by Eleftheria (Freedom) Square, famous for hosting meetings and events. Visitors of Nicosia have much to experience, both in the city and its surrounding countryside, from the historical museums and archaeological points of interest, Byzantine churches and cultural centres, to its fantastic markets and unique cuisine. “Magic” is but one word with which to describe the Nicosia experience.

Bicycle
The bike sharing scheme is the new transport system within Greater Nicosia. The Municipalities that created DEPL (Intermunicipal Bicycle Company of Nicosia) aim to change the way things work on Cypriot roads via an automated 3rd
generation bike sharing system which is similar to the ones used widely in major cities across the world. This innovative system was implemented to work hand in hand with the existing bike lanes within the Nicosia area and it will also integrate with the new bike lanes that are currently under construction. By the end of 2012 an extensive bicycle lane network will serve both the local population who commutes to and from the town centre each day and it can also benefit the tourists who visit the city.
The Nicosia Municipality has installed 100 bikes in 5 stations, Aglantzia Municipality 50 bikes in 5 stations, Strovolos Municipality 80 bikes in 8 stations, Dali Municipality 20 bikes in 3 stations, Agios Dometios Municipality 20 bikes in 2 stations, Latsia Municipality 15 bikes in 2 stations and Engomi Municipality 30 bikes in 3 stations. The system is integrated between all of the participating municipalities and each user can use and return a bike and any station. The user may, for example, get a bike from Aglantzia and return it to Strovolos or to any other station.
The scheme aims to encourage the public to choose bicycles as an alternative means of transport. http://www.podilatoendrasi.com.cy
