We have had a remarkable year thanks to you. I was lucky enough to see many of you at the 85 th Reunion in September. It was a glorious weekend with over 400 alumni, friends and supporters all coming together to reminisce about camp, Hante and Outdoor Academy (OA) experiences. I truly believe that it was the excitement leading up to, during and after this event that helped propel our Annual Fund past the original goal. This suc- cess provided much-needed assistance for capital expenditures and scholarships in 2012 and set us up well going into 2013 and the many initiatives we have on our plate. Last year we were able to award 110 campers and 21 students financial aid totaling $290,235. Of that, $135,540 was funded by our donors – the highest funded amount we have had to date. Thank you for creating this success! Looking ahead to 2013 we fully anticipate requests to remain at current levels. Other projects that were initiated in 2012 and that continue on into 2013 are the replacement of our waste water treatment plant and an overhaul of our data management system. These are critical needs for our foundation that you are helping to address. Our partnership with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy continues with the resubmission of a grant application to the Clean Water Management Trust Fund of NC. Funding of the grant would provide much needed revenue to position ENF to pay down some of the debt we incurred when we purchased the mountainside behind us. With a successful application, that very same land would go under a conservation agreement to keep that space wild for generations to come. Eagle’s Nest continues to seek indi- viduals and partners who are interested in assisting with this initiative. This year our Board of Trustees will embark upon long range planning process to chart a course for our next 15 years and our cen- tennial anniversary. We are excited to conduct this visioning exercise and set plans in place. There is a great deal of excitement at Eagle’s Nest these days with the fresh energy of our new Head of School , the excellent pro- gramming that happens across the seasons in camp, Hante and OA, and the successes we are seeing in our enrollments and donor support. You are a valued member of the network that drives our organization forward. Thank you for your loyalty and making our students and campers a part of your giving priorities. Eagle’s Nest

Foundation 2012 Annual Report

PO Box 5127 Winston-Salem NC 27113

Dear Eagle’s Nesters,

It is wonderful to take a moment and reflect on the past year and think of each of you who has done so much to sustain and care for Eagle’s Nest, its mission, our staff and faculty and the wonderful young people who participate in our programs. We have had

a remarkable year thanks to you.

I was lucky enough to see many of you at the 85th Reunion in September. It was a glorious weekend with over 400 alumni, friends and supporters all coming together to reminisce about camp, Hante and Outdoor Academy (OA) experiences. I truly believe that it was the excitement leading up to, during and after this event that helped propel our Annual Fund past the original goal. This suc-cess provided much-needed assistance for capital expenditures and scholarships in 2012 and set us up well going into 2013 and the

many initiatives we have on our plate.

Last year we were able to award 110 campers and 21 students financial aid totaling $290,235. Of that, $135,540 was funded by our donors – the highest funded amount we have had to date. Thank you for creating this success! Looking ahead to 2013 we fully

anticipate requests to remain at current levels.

Other projects that were initiated in 2012 and that continue on into 2013 are the replacement of our waste water treatment plant

and an overhaul of our data management system.

Eagle’s Nest continues to seek indi-

viduals and partners who are interested in assisting with this initiative.

This year our Board of Trustees will embark upon long range planning process to chart a course for our next 15 years and our cen-

tennial anniversary. We are excited to conduct this visioning exercise and set plans in place.

There is a great deal of excitement at Eagle’s Nest these days with the fresh energy of our new Head of School , the excellent pro-gramming that happens across the seasons in camp, Hante and OA, and the successes we are seeing in our enrollments and donor support. You are a valued member of the network that drives our organization forward. Thank you for your loyalty and making

our students and campers a part of your giving priorities.

With deep gratitude,

Noni Waite-Kucera Executive Director

During my first months as Head of School, I have been con-tinually struck by the power of our extended community both

here at the Nest and wherever our alumni can be found.

We are a Foundation that is firmly rooted in a particular place, and, at the same time, we are all part of a community that is fundamentally about connections and how to build good rela-tionships. This way of being goes far beyond the boundaries of our campus, and it is a joy to know that so many of you are

there in the world doing that good work.

It is also gratifying to know that many in the world of educa-tion are coming around to the kind of outdoor experiential edu-cation that we provide at Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Acad-emy. From Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods to Paul Tough’s How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hid-den Power of Character, there is a growing recognition that how to be a good, resilient person with a deep love of nature can be taught and cultivated in our young people. This is the

work we do, and it is what you make possible.

As we have discussed our principles over the last couple of years, we consistently come back to the importance of grati-tude. It is at the heart of our work and daily life, and I remain truly grateful for the opportunity to lead this school at this im-portant moment. Above all, I give thanks for the generous sup-port that each of you offer that helps make what we do possi-

ble. It is the essence of living well together.

Michael Brown, PhD

I’m very pleased to write that we had an OUTSTANDING summer of 2012! We laughed, explored, grew and had so much fun. We met many new campers, and made friends from across the country and the world. We traveled across the ocean to Spain for Hante, and returned two Added Adventures to our slate of programs. Our enrollment for the summer was higher than we’ve seen in years and we’re on track to have even more campers at Eagle’s Nest for the summer of 2013. We’re doing great things on Hart Road, and many families are eager to join

in the fun.

Thanks to your support we were able to bring 110 campers to Eagle’s Nest with a total of $83,285 awarded in financial aid. Our summer camp staff contributed $3,593 in donations which will go to fund a complete campership for the summer of 2013. We’re very proud that our strong scholarship program allows campers of varying income levels to experience Eagle’s Nest, and to bring their unique talents and perspectives to our com-munity while giving them the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones, and to grow in confidence, independence, lead-

ership, and responsibility.

This year was also a time of celebration. In the fall we hosted over 400 people at our 85th Reunion. It was wonderful to re-connect with so many alums and friends. We loved hearing each of their stories. It’s obvious to me that I’m not the only one who loves camp. Eagle’s Nest has profoundly affected so many people for years and years and years. I’m grateful for all of the people that have helped support our program and mis-

sion.

Before long we’ll be sweeping out the cabins, hanging wel-come signs, and getting ready to greet our first campers of 2013. Thanks to your support, I know that it’ll be another great

summer!

I appreciate the way in which children are respected but not “indulged” in an inappropriate way. Kids

can make responsible choices and are guided to do so in a most positive way. - Session 2 Camp Parent

OA has influenced my direction and

outlook on life by showing me that one

person can and will make a difference.

It's opened my eyes to the fact that

someone like me can do so much by

speaking out or talking to nature and

connecting. I learned that I can go way

beyond my limits and much more than I

thought. - Liza, OA Semester 33

OA set me on a path towards a career in education where the

goal is the exchange of knowledge and hands-on experiences,

and where the natural world is considered and valued.

Above all, it taught me that learning and community coexist

and I strive to establish a deep sense of community in my

classroom today.— Katharine Callard, OA Semester 6

She said at pick-up, “I wish this was the first day of camp. -
