OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

MODEL EG3SCM (Single Clamping Mechanism)

TO ATTACH EG3SCM UNIT DIRECTLY TO FORK LIFT CARRIAGE

Remove forks from the forklift carriage. Place top mounting bracket of EG3SCM unit over the top of your

upper fork bar or plate of the carriage, in the location where the bottom mounting bracket of the EG3SCM can

fit into the cut-out portion of the bottom bar or plate. Slide EG3SCM unit slightly left or right of center so both

mounting brackets are seated firmly on the bar. When two units are used, move them to right and left sides of

bar, and drop position lock pin into proper slots or holes. (For handling two 55-gallon standard drums, there

should be 24” between the centerline of both masts.)

WHEN USING SLIDE-ON FORK MOUNTING

Once the forks are in the pockets, the assembly can be secured by attaching the safety chain to the forklift

carriage. When the two EG3SCM units are set on the fork mounting, the position lock pins (located at the top

mounting bracket of the EG3SCM) will slide into the 9/16” holes or slots in the brackets on the fork mounting.

It is IMPERATIVE that these pins be engaged in the holes or slots in order to prevent the units from sliding off

the fork mounting. If drums of other diameters are to be handled, additional 9/16” holes or slots are in the

brackets.

WHEN USING SLIDE-ON FORK MOUNTING WITH THE OPTIONAL QUICK-CLAW SAFETY

RESTRAINT SYSTEM

The patented "Quick Claw" cam locks, when engaged, locks securely to the forks of the forklift to prevent any

chance of sliding off during sudden stops. This also eliminates the need for the operator to dismount the lift

truck to engage or disengage the standard safety chain provided on all Eagle-Grip™ attachments. Unique

rotating cams bind to the heel of each fork when lifted off the ground. When the cam locks come in contact with

the floor, it conveniently releases the attachment. The fork pockets on all Eagle-Grip 3 and 4 series

attachments are 43” in length. This 43” length is designed for use on lift trucks equipped with 42” length forks

for two reasons. The first is insure the tips of the forks do not contact the end of the fork pocket tubes and cause

the tips to penetrate the end of the tubes. The second is that the cam locks need to be in a position where the

heel of the forks is between 1.25” and 1.75” thick. The lift truck forks should be inspected prior to using the

quick-claw attachment to verify the fork thickness where the Quick-Claw cams engage the forks to ensure the

forks are between 1.25” and 1.75” thick. .

In the event the lift truck is equipped with 48” forks it is necessary for the fork pocket of the fork

mounting to be equipped with 49” long fork tubes. If the attachment is not built to accommodate 48”

length forks, the cam-locks on the Quick-Claw option may not function properly. Please consult Easy

Lift Equipment or your local dealer should you require a fork mount frame with longer fork tubes to

accommodate 48” or longer lift truck forks.

TO ADJUST TO PROPER POSITION FOR VARIOUS HEIGHT DRUMS

With unit attached to truck, lower carriage as far as possible. Remove adjustment pin, (item # 23 of drawing)

and lower or raise the clamping mechanism so that the lower jaws are slightly below the bead or rim of the

drum(s). It is advisable to have the cradle touching the lowest possible point of the drum(s) that still permits

engaging the drum(s). EXAMPLE: Top hole is recommended for 55-gallon drums.

Page 4: EAGLE-GRIP™ 3 SERIES ATTACHMENTS OPERATING …

TO OPERATE

With mast tilted slightly forward, center attachment with center of drum. Drive truck forward until attachment

contacts drum(s) and presses inner housings back into the outer housings. Raise carriage and drum will be

engaged and ready for transporting. Drum disengagement is accomplished by tilting the mast forward, then

lowering the carriage until the jaws have retracted completely. Truck operator can now back away to engage

another drum.

NOTE: All Eagle-Grip Attachments conform to OSHA standards. A metal plate, affixed to each

attachment, provides model number, serial number, rated capacity and attachment weight. OSHA

requires contacting the lift truck manufacturer for written approval of any attachment to be used on a

lift truck. Should the metal plate be missing - call for a free replacement

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Proper care and preventive maintenance of your new drum handling attachment will ensure productive, safe

handling and will provide you with many years of efficient, worry free service.

1. Perform a visual inspection of the attachment each time before using it. Check to see that all pins, cotter

pins, housings, and springs are in place. Missing parts can cause diminished performance or equipment

malfunction. Be sure to check the belts on the cradle for wear and tension. Worn or broken belts provide

little or no support. Belt tension should be adjusted to less than complete taught so they can provide a small

amount of spring and absorb shocks while transporting over rough ground.

2. Preventive maintenance should be performed either in conjunction with existing timetables or every 3-4

weeks. The clamping mechanism(s) (Part # 6004) should be sprayed thoroughly with a light grade oil (WD-

40 or equivalent substitute). This procedure will free any foreign matter that has gotten caught in the

clamping mechanism(s) and lubricate all moving parts. Once oiled, all parts should move freely with hand

manipulation. The top and bottom bar of the slide-on mounting should be lubricated with light crease. This

procedure allows the EG3SCM-CM’s to be moved easily from side to side on the slide-on mount if not used

on the actual fork lift carriage.

Heavy use of the attachment (6 or more hours daily) may require that certain parts be replaced on a yearly basis.

Preventive Maintenance Kits are available. Call your Eagle-Grip Attachment distributor for more

information.

HEAD EXCHANGE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

Designed to provide our customers with a scheduled maintenance program to insure ultimate performance and long life.

Aside from required visual inspections, belt replacement and monthly lubrication, the clamping assembly(s) or heads should have a scheduled preventive maintenance service. The intervals between services dependent on usage, but should be done at least annually.

HOW IT WORKS AND WHAT IT COSTS:

• Customers will be notified of their next scheduled p.m. service. • Upon approval, a loaner head(s) will be shipped for the customer for use while

customers’ head(s) are being serviced. (Heads are generally shipped by UPS) • Customers then return the head(s) to be serviced in the same carton that has a

return authorization number affixed to it. (See instructions below for clamping head removal from the mast.)

• Upon receipt, the customer will be notified of the exact cost of the service for prior approval. Costs are determined by the required parts, labor, and all freight/UPS charges. The use of loaner heads is free of charge.

• Upon completion, the serviced heads are returned to the customer, and the swap procedure is reversed with the loaner heads being returned to the factory.

SCOPE OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:

• Inspection and disassembly of clamping mechanism. • Clean or sandblast and repaint all parts as required. • Replace springs, cotter pins, or any worn parts as necessary. • Reassemble clamping mechanism and lubricate.

If requested the entire attachment can be shipped to the factory to have the p.m. service performed or for complete refurbishment. Attachment loaners are also available at no charge. Due to the heavier weight of the attachments shipping is done via common carrier, and is more costly than UPS. Should you have any questions regarding this procedure, please call customer service at 800-233-1800/302-737-7000 or your Eagle-Grip™ Attachment distributor for clarification.

TO REMOVE CLAMPING ASSEMBLY FROM MAST:

All Eagle-Grip™ clamping assemblies (heads) are designed for easy removal from the masts, without tools, in seconds. To remove the head assembly, pull the hairpin clip (item #17) from the adjustment pin (item #14). Lift slightly on the head assembly and remove the adjustment pin (item #14). Slide the complete assembly out of the mast and reverse the process with the replacement head. .
