Michael Klaus Schmidt

Exhibition “Visual Chant”

Michael Klaus Schmidt’s work as an attempt to strive for perfection and to connect with the beauty and intri-cacy found in both the macrocosm, the large forces of the universe, as well as the smallest things, the microcosm.

His subject matter include among other things celestial bodies, trees, and a hybrid architecture hinting at both Eastern and Western origins. These large shapes are covered in patterns and organic details, intricately rendered within layers of glue and paint. The details in his work represent those that we see all around us. Through his work, the artist asks us to look closely at a tree's bark, the skin of a salamander or the surface of a rock, where we will notice more and more intricacy. Another major influence in his work is the Islamic art of illumination found in some of the most ancient manu-scripts of the Quran. The decorative elements in this tradition represents a kind of visual chant, suggesting mysterious order by means of poetic geometric patterns. The artist has a long resume of exhibitions: Chicago, New Orleans, Toronto, San Francisco, London and Saudi Arabia. He is a member of the Elmhurst Artists Guild, and works as a freelance graphic designer and children's book author and illustrator. Visual Chant will be featured at the UIC Health in Arts Clinic from February 26th through May 26th (Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm/Wednesdays 8:00 am – 3:00 pm) The clinic is located at 835 S. Wolcott, on the UIC campus in Chicago, Illinois. A reception will be held from 5:30 – 8:30 pm on Friday, March 20th, the public is invited.

Do stop by the locations listed below and see the variety of artwork for sale. If you’re interested in selling some artwork around our community call Sharon Peters at 630-279-5269 or contact by e-mail at [email protected]. We had several sales at the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra Concert in January.
