CLASS OF 2007 YEARBOOK

HUNTINGDON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA

MAY 24, 2007 COMMENCEMENT

HUNTINGDON COUNTRY CLUB

RT. 26 SOUTH, HUNTINGDON, PA

Leadership Huntingdon County

Leadership Huntingdon County is designed to stimulate positive commu-nity change through leadership training; training that will identify, involve,

educate and motivate leaders. The program prepares committed and quali-

fied individuals to assume leadership roles, and further enhances the abilities

of existing leaders while exploring critical issues facing Huntingdon County.

The leadership program is designed to stimulate a commitment and responsi-

bility to serve which will strengthen our communities and enhance the quality

of life in Huntingdon County.

This leadership program includes a variety of educational approaches includ-

ing lecture, debate, case studies, skill building, "hands on" experience, team-

work, site visits, fact finding, and problem solving for issues facing our com-

munity. Issues that are examined include community heritage, local govern-

ment, tourism, transportation, economic development, health care, human

services, arts and heritage. Members of each leadership class are expected to

participate in the development and execution of a community service project.

Class members commit to participation in a nine month leadership program

consisting of one Saturday retreat, eight Thursday evening classes, and two

Saturday field trips. A Kickoff Reception in September and Graduation Ban-

quet in May round out the program. Leadership Huntingdon County is op-erated by a nine member Leadership Steering Committee.

Steering Committee members are Debra Gregory, Richard Stahl, Michael

Dudley, Lisa Roth, Helen Pyzowski, Ray Chambers, Mark Gutshall, Chris-

tine Maxwell, and Heather Dubbs. Two retiring charter members of the Steer-

ing Committee are Yvonne Martin and Duane Stroman.

While the Class of 2007 is the fourth graduating class, planning for Leader-

ship Huntingdon County began in 2002 when the need to develop and

strengthen community leadership became a goal of several organizations, in-

cluding the Huntingdon County Partnership for Economic Progress (PEP),

Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce, and Penn State Cooperative Ex-

tension.

“Our leadership project team was

composed of life-long residents of

Huntingdon County, those who had

lived elsewhere and returned to the

area and one person who had cho-

sen to relocate to Huntingdon. We

were all enriched, on some level, by

the broad-based information we

received about the multiple opportu-

nities, resources, activities and pro-

grams Huntingdon County has to

offer. The class also gave us the

opportunity to meet people of vari-

ous ages and professions who we

may not have otherwise been fortu-

nate enough to meet. What a great

experience!”

Team Trail Mix

Team Members:

(L-R) Bill Gearhart, Steve Carper, Susanne House, Lori Schouppe-Wright, Keri Aurand

Project:

The “Trail Mix” team examined the issue of tourism and outdoor recreation. Specifically, we wanted to

address three factors: increasing awareness of the opportunities currently available, adding to those opportunities,

and developing “critical mass” and inertia to bring more tourists to the region and to keep them coming back. We

researched and discussed how several towns in other areas of Pennsylvania and the northeast successfully made

the transition to become an eco-tourist destination.

We examined several possibilities, including developing themed “tour packages,” such as a “family tour,”

“hiking tour,” “history tour,” “fishing tour,” “bird-watching tour,” as well as developing an “outdoor decathlon”

event. While those ideas were attractive, we chose to address the immediate need for a mountain biking shop in

the Huntingdon County/Raystown Lake region to capitalize on the new mountain biking trail being constructed

around the lake by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The team worked to build on efforts by the Juniata Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (JCEL), Hun-

tingdon County Business and Industry (HCBI), and the Raystown Lake Visitor’s Center to help entrepreneurs

take advantage of grant money that’s available to start such a business. Team Trail Mix worked closely with

JCEL, reviewing and updating a mock business plan and making it available on the JCEL website so those inter-

ested would have a starting point for reference. The team then developed a request for proposal (RFP), identified

potential entrepreneurs and media outlets, distributed the RFP throughout Pennsylvania, and assembled the RFP

responses from interested entrepreneurs.

After reviewing the responses, the team plans to interview the candidates and make a recommendation to

JCEL on which proposal should be awarded the grant.

Team Huntingdon Insights

Team Members: (L-R) George Conrad, Jane McManus, Rosann Brown, Judy McMullen, Janet Chambers

Mission Statement:

Provide qualitative information on Kindergarten through 12th grade schools to aid in life changing decisions.

Project:

The focus of our team is community development and education. The project that we selected is to gather qualita-

tive information on K-12 schools to assist people in choosing a school for their children. We developed a question-

naire to address various topics that someone unfamiliar with a school would have trouble knowing. The main top-

ics are safety issues, class size, quality of education, outside of school activities, and other miscellaneous items.

The specific questions came out of interviews with Human Resource managers from local employers as they deal

with these types of questions in recruiting employees from outside the area.

We had the questions answered by the Huntingdon School District, Juniata Valley School District, Mount Union

School District, Southern Huntingdon School District, and the Calvary Christian Academy. Once the information

was gathered, we published it on the website maintained by the Huntingdon County Planning and Development

Department, http://www.huntingdonarea.info.

Our hope is that people moving to Huntingdon County or others that are evaluating schools can use our informa-

tion to pick the best school for their children. We also believe this will be a tool for employers and real estate

agents to use.

Team Huntingdon County Helping Hands

Team Members:

(L-R) Claudia Conrad, Linda Frehn, Scott Price, Susan Harry, Karen Foust, Patty Endres

Mission Statement:

Through Leadership Huntingdon County, the members of Helping Hands will strive to inform all residents of

Huntingdon County about the importance of volunteering in their communities; that through volunteering, com-

passion and respect for other’s individual diversity will help replace disconnection with understanding.

Project: The members of the Helping Hands group focused on concerns pertaining to Health, Education, and Social Services in Hunting-

don County. The group believed that the “volunteer need” addressed all three areas of concern. Thus began the project plan.

The group discussed how best to handle the project and thought simple was best, so decided to a create directory of agencies in

Huntingdon County that would be in need of volunteers. Much thought was put into how best to inform all residents of Huntingdon County,

and this resulted in three forms of the directory. First, placemats would be made that would include agency names. Second, tri-fold pam-

phlets would be made that included the agency names and phone numbers. Third, a website would be constructed with the most detailed

form of the directory; that would include the agency names, numbers, email addresses, contact persons, and a list summarizing what duties

volunteers would likely participate in. Both the placemats and pamphlets would be distributed throughout Huntingdon County.

Each member of the group contacted several agencies and gathered their specific information. The information was combined

into a master list of agencies. After contacting the many agencies, the group realized that the array of volunteer duties was so vast, that

anyone could find something to volunteer in that was of interest to them.

On April 10, 2007, the Helping Hands group had a proclamation signed by the Huntingdon County Commissioners, proclaiming

April 15-21 as National Volunteer Week.

With the help of other volunteers donating time to the design, draft, data entry, print and distribution of the placemats, pamphlets,

and website, the team was successful in encouraging the residents of Huntingdon County to volunteer in their communities. With the help

of these volunteers, the group was also able to distribute the placemats, pamphlets during National Volunteer Week. Over 10,000 placemats

were distributed to local restaurants throughout the county; and approximately 3,000 brochures were placed in various locations throughout

the county. The website can be accessed by going to the county website, www.huntingdoncounty.net, and clicking on “volunteer opportuni-

ties.”

Team Huntingdon County Helping Hands would like to thank Leadership Huntingdon County for giving us the opportunity to

come together and impact Huntingdon County in a positive way. The team’s “motto” is a quote by Winston Churchill, and defines what the

Helping Hands believe: ‘We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.’

The Business Daily Team

Team Members:

(L-R) Dan Crotsley, Chris Hartman, Cheryl Shope, and Donna Marcotte

(Absent from picture: Roger Briggs and Robin Binder Heath)

Project:

As the business development project team, we began by meeting with representatives from the Juniata Center for

Entrepreneurial Leadership (JCEL) and Huntingdon County Business & Industry (HCB&I) to learn about current

interests of the Huntingdon area business community.

Our team, now named “The Business Daily”, chose a project centered around assessing both the business commu-

nity’s and general public’s interest in having more frequent and detailed business content—perhaps a regularly

occurring business section—added to the local newspaper, The Daily News.

We had an initial meeting with The Daily News to discuss the project and get input from them. Then we conducted

two surveys: one of business leaders in the Huntingdon area and another of general Daily News readers. For great-

est access for general readers, we conducted both an Internet-based survey and in-person surveys at Raystown

Lake Region Home & Garden Show and Mayfest, an annual local festival.

Both business and general readership surveys were well received and results showed strong support for more busi-

ness content. A report of the survey results was prepared and presented to The Daily News and copies of the final

report were provided to area business groups that provided input and helped with survey distribution including,

JCEL, HCB&I, Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce, and the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau.
