Dinacharya a journey of self discovery, self help and selfhealing - ultimately resulting in self discipline. In Sanskrit Dina means daily and Charya means following, moving.Ayurveda
recommends that in order to be optimally healthy we should tune our bodies to the nature's
master cycle which in turn regulates the various other rhythms.
I find it interesting that an acharya is a teacher, guide or instructor. For me this shows just
how powerfully connected the sanskrit language really is.
other fine ideas to
incorporate into your day:
OBSERVE MOUNA
Observe Mouna (vow of silence)
for a couple of hours daily.
During the period of silence,
listen for the sounds between the
sounds.
JAPA
You can repeat any Mantra(sacred syllable), such as pure
Om or Om Namo Narayanaya,
Sri Ram, Sita Ram, Sri Ram Jaya
Ram Jaya Jaya Ram, Om Namah
Sivaya, Om Namo Bhagavate
Vasudevaya, Om
Saravanabhavaya Namah, Hari
Om, or Gayatri (a sacred Vedic
Mantra), according to your taste

Parsis, Sikhs and Muslims may
select a name or Mantra from the

charity regularly.
things you might want to consider
as you begin your day.
1. Wake Up Early in the Morning to DispelKapha ( earth-
water accumulation)
It is good to wake up before the sun rises, when there are
loving (sattvic) qualities in nature that bring peace of mind
and freshness to the senses. Sunrise varies according to theseasons, but on average vata(space air) people should get
up about 6 am, pitta (fire water) people by 5:30 am, and
kapha (water earth) by 4:30 am (to lose weight and healdepression). Right after waking, look at hands for a few
moments and then gently move them over face and chest
down to the waist. This cleans the aura and is essential togood digestion, and mental health.
2. Scrape your Tongue to Remove Toxins (Ama-
undigested materials)
Gently scrape the tongue from the back forward, until you
have scraped the whole surface for 3-5 strokes. This
stimulates the internal organs, helps digestion, and removesdead bacteria. Stainless steel can be used by all. More
specifically Vatacan use stainless steel scraper, pitta silver,

Stop watching TV, using the computer
or reading at least an hour before bed.
Instead, spend some quiet time with your
loved ones. Or sit quietly, linking up
with your Guru or simply the larger
cosmos and a sense of grace. You can
also do a second session of seated
practice now.
4. Drink 1 glass to !quart Warm Water to Cleanse &
Rehydrate
Drink a glass of room temperature or warm water that has sat
out to settle. Either have it ready in a jar on a candle warmer
or leave it in an uncovered glass overnight to sit. This washesthe GI track, flushes the kidneys, and stimulates peristalsis
(bowel movement) and rehydrates the body after the
nighttime liver detoxification. It is not a good idea to start theday right away with black tea or coffee, as this drains kidney
energy, stresses the adrenals, causes constipation, insomnia
and is habit-forming. Warm water will most likely promotehealthy evacuation of the bowels within 5-10 minutes.

brahmi ghee, (Available from www.BanyanBotanicals.com
or from www.Ayurveda.com).
6. Oil Drops in the Ears (Karna purana)
Conditions such as ringing in the ears, excess ear wax, poor
hearing, lockjaw, and TMJ, are all due to excess vata in the
ears. Dryness in ears , especially in the autumn/winter seasoncan be the cause of many ailments. Putting 5 drops of warm
sesame oil in each ear can help these disorders.: also trybrahmi oil or neem oil .
7. Apply Oil to the Head & Body (Abhyanga) ( am or pm
or both)
Rub warm oil over the head and body. Gentle, daily oilmassage of the scalp can bring happiness, as well as prevent
headache, baldness, graying, and receding hairline. Oiling
your body before bedtime will help induce sound sleep andkeep the skin soft., Sesame , Ashwagandha-Bala Oil, or
Mahanarayan Oil diluted with very warm sesame oil., Neem
Oil, or Maha Ganesh Oil diluted with warm sunflower
