The new separated fan and coolingsystem on the 836G incorporates manytrash resistant features, including anautomatic reversing hydraulic demandfan, which reduces the chance of trashand debris entering the enginecompartment. The system also reducesoperating costs (fender cleanouts) andincreases cooling capacity.
1 Roof mounted A/C makes the rearcooling package easier to clean byremoving the A/C core from the rear. The frequency of cleaning thecondenser core is reduced, providingbetter cooling to the cab for longerperiods of time.
2 Air inlet screen is verticallycorrugated fine mesh to help reducetrash from entering radiator area andallows debris to fall off.
3 Hydraulically driven demand fanautomatically adjusts fan speed foroptimum cooling, resulting inreduced power draw on the engine, better fuel efficiency, and morepower for the hydraulics and rimpull. ■ Demand fan swings out 65 degrees
for easy cleaning.■ Reverses automatically at preset
interval to remove trash from airinlet screen that may haveaccumulated.
■ Also reverses manually fromthe cab.

Extending the life of your current site through increasedcompaction can be a cost-effective alternative to new sitedevelopment.
The Caterpillar 836G Landfill Compactor, the heaviest in itsclass, is available in a combination of wheel tip designs toprovide productive and efficient compaction in landfillapplications.
1 Long-life Weld-on Plus Tips with Extended Abrasion-Resistant Material (ARM). Exclusive Plus-shaped designprovides superior compaction densities, excellent tractionand sidehill stability on sloped material. A widely-spaced tippattern, engineered to require fewer tips than competitors, results in less plugging, lower replacement cost andmaximum compaction. Each tip contains more wearmaterial than competitive tips.■ Proven exceptional compaction.■ Caterpillar guarantees 10,000 hours or four years
wear life.■ Lower replacement cost.■ Cat tips offer the lowest cost per hour of any compactor
tips in the industry.
2 Self-cleaning Chopper Wheels (optional) are designed todeliver maximum compaction and traction in landfill work.■ Aggressive chopping action is provided by 28 blades
per wheel. ■ Heat-treated DH-2, Abrasion-Resistant Material steel
blades provide longer wear. ■ The staggered-chevron blade arrangement evenly
distributes chopping coverage and blade center gussetshelp assure maximum refuse demolition.
■ Blades are mounted differently on front and rear wheelsto maximize chopping and compaction in both forwardand reverse.
Smooth wheels are also offered by Caterpillar for thosecustomers who do not want to be limited to the tiparrangements offered but still want the designed wheel for thismachine. (Also allows for the use of the Caterpillar AxleGuard System.)
An extended inner rim wheel group (optional) is available onall wheels for use with the Cat Axle Guard System.

The straight blade is ideal for mostwaste management applications. ■ Built to withstand the rigors of heavy-
duty dozing.■ Versatile blade for most applications.■ Trash rack design provides excellent
viewing and load-carrying capability.■ Design incorporates Cat cutting
edges.
The U-Blade is heavier and has a largercapacity than the straight blade. ■ Offers more control of trash when
pushing longer distances.
See a Caterpillar dealer for blade andother specialty attachments availablefrom Caterpillar.
The Axle Guard System is comprised ofthree basic components: ■ Frame bosses are first welded to the
frame. ■ Bolt-on guarding assemblies (1) are
then mounted onto the frame bossesand frame.
■ Rim extensions complete theassembly and are welded directly torims of the wheels.
A cab bottom guard (2) protects hosesand wires beneath the cab from damagedue to flying debris and waste.
Front frame guards (3) prevent trashbuild-up inside the frame that coulddamage hydraulic lines.
Ground clearance has been increasedby 76 mm.
The Cat Axle Guard System (optional)protects final drives, planetaries andseals from damage caused by wire, cable, plastics or other materials whichcan wrap or become packed around axlecomponents. ■ Guarding increases axle
circumference to avert stringymaterials from wrapping andencircling the axle.
■ Extended rim wheels further help toseal out materials which cling towheel or axle surfaces.
■ Recessed bolt heads reduce snaggingof stringy or stranded materials.
■ System reduces the need for periodiccleaning of axle assemblies.

■ Advanced Diesel EngineManagement II (ADEM II) systemcontrols the fuel injector solenoidsto start and stop fuel injection. This system provides automaticaltitude compensation, air filterrestriction indication, and will notallow the engine to fire until it hasoil pressure – acting as cold startprotection.
2 Separate engine cooling systemisolates the radiator and fan from theengine compartment, which provides: – Lower sound levels.– A cleaner engine compartment.– A sloped hood for improved
viewing.– More efficient cooling by drawing
air through the side instead ofthrough the engine compartment.
1 The Caterpillar 3456 Diesel Engineis based on one of the most popularCat engines available – the 3406E.The 3456 features 481 nethorsepower, compared to the 473 horsepower available in theprevious model. The 3456 providesquick response, high productivity and exceptional service life whileimproving fuel efficiency up to 17 percent.■ The 49 percent torque rise provides
high lugging force during dozingand spreading applications andacceleration in high rimpullconditions. – The torque curve effectively
matches the transmission shiftpoints to provide maximumefficiency and faster cycle times.
■ Two-piece articulated pistons, with forge steel crown and castaluminum skirts, are gallerycooled by oil spray for improvedoil control and increased servicelife. These gallery cooled steelpistons feature: – Better ring cooling.– Reduced emissions.– Better performance.– Improved fuel efficiency.
■ Airflow matched turbochargerwith power rating helps reduceemissions.
■ Nineteen percent more bearingarea allows the engine to operate atthe maximum cylinder pressure.
■ Higher cylinder pressure capabilityhelps reduce fuel consumption andimproves high altitude operation.
■ Aftercooler lowers inlet chargetemperature and reduces thermalstress that can cause prematurewear of pistons, rings, and liners.
■ Cylinder head exhaust port sleevesreduce heat rejection, which resultsin less heat transfer into the waterjacket system.
Power Train836G power train components deliver dependable, reliable performance customers expect from Cat Wheel Dozers.
3 Caterpillar planetary, electronic, power shift transmission. Electronicshifting provides smooth, consistentshifts with finger tip controls housedin the steering system. Large diameterclutches coupled with four and fiveplanet gear trains provide addeddurability for extended, trouble-freelife.■ The programmable Controlled
Throttle Shift works with thetransmission ECM to prolongtransmission life through efficientshifting.
9

■ Advanced Modular Cooling System(AMOCS) improves coolingcapabilities with 10 cores using a two-pass system. – Coolant travels from the engine
up the fan side of the cores overthe top and down the engine sideof the cores.
– With no top tank to remove andno tilting of radiator guardrequired to remove any cores, serviceability is improved.
4 Impeller Clutch Torque Converteroffers improved rimpull control andextended tip and wheel life. Thetorque converter is equipped with a lockup clutch and free wheel statorfor improved fuel efficiency.■ Left pedal control allows the
operator to reduce rimpull from100 percent to 20 percent whilemaintaining high engine speed forslower controlled work withouta loss of power. After 20 percent isachieved, further pedal travelapplies the brake.
■ Impeller clutch. Locked in fullyengaged position for maximumengine power transfer.
■ Lockup clutch. Provides directdrive efficiency for increasedproductivity and improved fueleconomy on long distance dozing.
5 Oil-enclosed, multiple-disc brakeson front axle provide consistentperformance and reliability throughheat rejection and easy serviceability.■ Inboard mounted brakes operate on
the low-torque side of the finaldrive, requiring less braking force. The location of the brake discimproves axle oil circulation, promoting efficient cooling andheat dissipation. The overall resultis less heat build up and a longservice life.
■ Parking brake is dry disc, springapplied, and oil released. It ismounted on the transmissiontransfer gear output shaft formanual operation.
■ EMS II monitors the parking brakeand alerts the operator if the brakeis engaged.

Revolutionary electro-hydraulic controlsystem provides low-effort fingertipcontrol. Floor-mounted control podlever sends electrical signals to a pilotvalve mounted on the front frame. This moves the sound, heat and effortcaused by a hydraulic valve out of the operator’s station.
1 Lift lines are in a higher locationwhere damage from debris is lesslikely.
Low-effort, Assist, or STIC steeringare other results of innovative design. A new mechanical feedback system and a redesigned valve ratio providequarter-turn wheel or side-to-side STICsteering. Unlike systems that rely onsteering wheel velocity to activatesteering cylinders, this system directlylinks steering wheel or STIC position toarticulation angle. This provides:■ Precise control.■ Quicker response.■ Dramatically reduced operator motion
and effort.
The Reversing Demand Fanis a speed controlled, hydraulic fanthat provides maximum coolingefficiency. Power is directed throughthe fan system only when it is neededand reverses automatically to purgedebris. (Pressing rocker switch in cabmay also manually reverse fan.)
HydraulicsWell-balanced hydraulics deliver precise low-effort control and trouble-free operation.
1
Load sensing steering maximizesmachine performance by directingpower to the steering system only whenthe operator steers the machine. Thisallows more power to be applied to theground when the machine is not beingsteered. It also helps decrease fuelconsumption because the steeringsystem does not constantly draw on the engine.
Caterpillar’s XT-3 and XT-5 hose,O-ring face seals, and large capacity lift cylinder top off the hydraulicsystem, delivering the performance anddurability owners expect. Reliablecomponents reduce the risk of leaksand blown lines, helping protect theenvironment, and reducing operatingcosts.

The 836G benefits significantly from thedramatic reduction in operator motioneffort provided by Assist steering, STICsteering, and hydraulic blade controls. These features make the 836G theeasiest operating machine in its sizeclass.
1 Assist steering allows one handoperation of steering and transmissioncontrols. Unlike traditional steering, which rotates more than one full turn, the assist steering wheel rotatesapproximately 50 degrees in bothdirections. Tilt and telescopingsteering column help fit the machineto the operator.
2 STIC Control System (optional)is a revolutionary system thatintegrates steering and transmissioninto a single controller. Simple side-to-side motions of the operator’s leftarm turn the machine right or left.■ Transmission shifting forward,
neutral or reverse is controlled bythe operator’s fingers, and gearselection is controlled by theoperator’s thumb.
■ Produce a fluid motion that reduceseffort and allows the operator towork the machinefor long periods with little orno fatigue.
3 Floor-mounted electro-hydraulicblade controls are adjustable fore andaft, with a height-adjustable armrestso that operators of any size can finda comfortable operating position.Single lever control allows operatorto control blade functions.
Operator ControlsA revolutionary way to operate with easy-to-use, low-effort controls.

The 836G cab design promotesproductivity and operator comfort. The cab includes improved viewingarea and ventilation, intermittent wet-arm wipers, ergonomic design andcontrol placement, and is radio-readyfor two-way radios.
Improved viewing in all directions:■ Extended windows open the
operator’s view for exceptionalforward and peripheral viewing.
■ Bonded glass in the front windoweliminates distracting metal framesfor improved operator viewing to the blade.
■ The downsloped hood improvesrearward viewing by allowing theoperator to see objects closer to themachine.
1 Internal ROPS improves visibility andstyling, giving the 836G a sleek newlook.
2 Left foot pedal operates ImpellerClutch Torque Converter for aboutthe first inch of travel, then engagesthe brakes. Within the first inch ofpedal travel, rimpull can be controlledfrom 100 percent to 20 percent.
3 Comfort Series seat is six-wayadjustable and has a one inch thickerseat cushion, providing increasedoperator comfort and support. Theseat cushions reduce the pressure onthe lower back and thighs, whileoffering freer arm and leg movement.Air suspension adds to the overallcomfort level for a smooth ride overrough terrain.
4 Throttle lock allows operator to presetthe engine speed and remove his footfrom accelerator pedal whilemaintaining constant power. Thethrottle lock can be deactivated bypressing the brake pedal.
5 Electronic Monitoring System (EMS)provides gauges, tachometer, speedometer, and three-level warningfor full-time monitoring of keyfunctions. The system alerts theoperator of immediate or impendingproblems with engine oil pressure, brake oil pressure, charging system, parking brake, hydraulic oil level, transmission filter, and low fuel.
6 Heating, air conditioning and lightsare controlled by easy to accessrocker and rotary switches locatedabove right door.
7 Armrests and controls are mountedon the floor and off of seat for a moredurable seat and added stability ofcontrols.
Improved ventilation ducts and ventsprovide better airflow to the operatorand windows through 12 louveredvents, including two on each door post.
