October proved to be a busy month filled with all sorts of student activity. Some of the most excitement has been generated by our teams who are still competing in the various playoff competitions. This weekend, our girls soccer team captured the Long Island Championship crown (https://goo.gl/EHbbwm), earning a ticket to the State Semifinals in Cortland this coming Saturday. As the soccer team was finishing their game, the volleyball team won their semifinal match, earning the right to compete for the Nassau County Championship this coming Thursday. Finally, four of our cross country runners earned the right to compete in the State Championship meet at Sunken Meadow State Park this weekend (https://goo.gl/9Z7PsC). We wish all of our student athletes the best as they continue to compete! We expect the rapid pace of October to continue through the holidays and the December break. As always, we have much to celebrate and recognize: ¾ Day of Service and Learning: Thanks to the incredible efforts of our parents, students and faculty members, our 10th Annual Day of Service and Learning was a wonderful success! Students and faculty spanned out across our community to assist others, and our parents and students came through with tremendous amounts of donations in support of this worthwhile venture. Even the weather cooperated! A huge “Thank You” to Mr. Timothy Schwalm and Mr. Jason Craven, our faculty coordinators for the Day of Service! They both worked tirelessly to arrange all of the details of the day. For an overview of some of the many activities that took place, visit my blog and search for “Day of Service” (https://goo.gl/WvD0nx). ¾ AP Scholars: Congratulations to 157 Wheatley students who earned AP Scholar recognition! This recognition is given to students who have earned passing scores on at least three Advanced Placement examinations. This was the highest total recorded by Wheatley students. Congratulations to all of the students, and a big “Thank You” to the faculty for its support of the students. You can read more at https://goo.gl/RYoQJx. ¾ Trip to Spain! Last week, nearly two dozen students and four faculty members departed for a week in Spain. The intrepid travelers will spend the time in the Seville region, absorbing the culture and history while practicing their linguistic skills. You can read more at https://goo.gl/4oXw6h. Of course, these aforementioned activities have taken place alongside numerous other activities both inside and outside of school. The level of dedication and commitment of our staff and students is remarkable! I would like to share with you some of the important events that are on the horizon: ¾ Superintendent’s Conference Day: Please note students do not have classes on Tuesday, 6 November. ¾ Diwali on Wednesday, 7 November: Schools are closed for this festival. Happy Diwali to our families who celebrate! ¾ PTO Bake Sale: The PTO Bake Sale will take place on Wednesday, 14 November. We could most certainly use your support for this significant fund-raising opportunity. Kindly see the included flyer.

Dear Parents:

Welcome to Wheatley in November! October proved to be a busy month filled with all sorts of student activity. November 2018 Dear Parents and Guardians: I am pleased to announce our upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences at Wheatley. These conferences are for all students in Grades 8-12 and will be held on four different dates:

Ø Tuesday, 20 November (12:45 pm – 3:45 pm) [early dismissal (12:15 PM) for all students] Ø Monday, 26 November (6:00 pm – 8:00 pm) Ø Tuesday, 27 November (12:45 pm – 3:45 pm) [early dismissal (12:15 PM) for all students] Ø Tuesday, 4 December (6:00 pm – 8:00 pm)

For the past several years, we have had separate conferences for 8-9 students and 10-12 students. This year, all grades will have conferences over four separate sessions. These conference sessions will provide you with an opportunity to meet individually with some of your child’s teachers. Reservations are made on-line through the website https://wheatley.schoolsoft.com. Please note that this is the same conference system that Wheatley has used for the past nine years and that Willets Road began using six years ago. You can use the same username and password that you used in previous years. If you do not recall either of these items, there is a password recovery link at the site.

In order to try to accommodate parental needs, we have established the following guidelines:

Ø During the first two weeks of online signups, you are permitted to reserve up to three teacher conferences for the major subjects (e.g., English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science) and any number of additional conferences for the non-major subjects. Please note that if you register for more than three major subjects during this time period, one of them will be deleted. This restriction will be eliminated on Sunday, 18 November at 6:00 PM.

Ø There will be an opportunity to sign up for additional conferences at the very beginning of each session. Sign-up sheets will be posted just prior to the start of each conference session. If there is an open slot on this sign-up sheet, you are welcome to reserve time. Please note that some teachers may not have slots available, however.

Ø If you are unable to meet with a particular teacher because his or her schedule is full, please contact that teacher in order to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet.

Ø Each conference is five minutes in length. It is helpful to have specific questions or concerns in mind. If you feel that you need additional time, please arrange for a follow-up appointment with the teacher.

Ø These conferences are available for all grades, but they are not a requirement. If your child is struggling in a particular class, you are encouraged to make an appointment and bring along your child! You can reserve conference time through: https://wheatley.schoolsoft.com.

Ø Conference sign-ups will open on Sunday, 4 November at 7:00 PM. You will receive an email reminder about the conferences just before the sign-up window opens and closes.

Given that conference night follows the issuing of first quarter report cards, you will have an opportunity to meet with teachers with whom you have particular concerns. I expect that you will find the conferences to be both productive and informative. As always, you are encouraged to contact your child’s teachers whenever you have concerns about his or her progress in class. Warmly,
