General safety rulesWarning! Read all instructions. Failure to followall instructions listed below may result in electricshock, fire and/or serious injury. The term„power tool“ in all of the warnings listed belowrefers to your mains operated (corded) powertool or battery operated (cordless) power tool.SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

1 Work areaa Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered

and dark areas invite accidents.b Do not operate power tools in explosive

atmospheres, such as in the presence offlammable liquids, gases or dust. Power toolscreate sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

c Keep children and bystanders away whileoperating a power tool. Distractions can causeyou to lose control.

2 Electrical safetya Power tool plugs must match the outlet.

Never modify the plug in any way. Do not useany adapter plugs with earthed (grounded)power tools. Unmodified plugs and matchingoutlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

b Avoid body contact with earthed or groundedsurfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges andrefrigerators. There is an increased risk ofelectric shock if your body is earthed orgrounded.

c Do not expose power tools to rain or wetconditions. Water entering a power tool willincrease the risk of electric shock.

d Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord forcarrying, pulling or unplugging the powertool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharpedges or moving parts. Damaged or entangledcords increase the risk of electric shock.

e When operating a power tool outdoors, usean extension cord suitable for outdoor use.Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reducesthe risk of electric shock.

3 Personal safetya Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use

common sense when operating a power tool.

Do not use a power tool while you are tired orunder the influence of drugs, alcohol ormedication. A moment of inattention whileoperating power tools may result in seriouspersonal injury.

b Use safety equipment. Always wear eyeprotection. Safety equipment such as dustmask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, orhearing protection used for appropriateconditions will reduce personal injuries.

c Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switchis in the off position before plugging in.Carrying power tools with your finger on theswitch or plugging in power tools that have theswitch on invites accidents.

d Remove any adjusting key or wrench beforeturning the power tool on. A wrench or a keyleft attached to a rotating part of the power toolmay result in personal injury.

e Do not overreach. Keep proper footing andbalance at all times. This enables better controlof the power tool in unexpected situations.

f Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing orjewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and glovesaway from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelleryor long hair can be caught in moving parts.

g If devices are provided for the connection ofdust extraction and collection facilities,ensure these are connected and properlyused. Use of these devices can reduce dustrelated hazards.

4 Power tool use and carea Do not force the power tool. Use the correct

power tool for your application. The correctpower tool will do the job better and safer at therate for which it was designed.

b Do not use the power tool if the switch doesnot turn it on and off. Any power tool thatcannot be controlled with the switch isdangerous and must be repaired.

c Disconnect the plug from the power sourcebefore making any adjustments, changingaccessories, or storing power tools.Such preventive safety measures reduce the riskof starting the power tool accidentally.

d Store idle power tools out of the reach ofchildren and do not allow persons unfamiliarwith the power tool or these instructions tooperate the power tool. Power tools aredangerous in the hands of untrained users.

e Maintain power tools. Check for misalignmentor binding of moving parts, breakage of partsand any other condition that may affect thepower tools operation. If damaged, have thepower tool repaired before use. Many accidentsare caused by poorly maintained power tools.

f Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properlymaintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edgesare less likely to bind and are easier to control.

g Use the power tool, accessories and tool bitsetc., in accordance with these instructionsand in the manner intended for the particulartype of power tool, taking into account theworking conditions and the work to beperformed. Use of the power tool for operationsdifferent from those intended could result in ahazardous situation.

5 Servicea Have your power tool serviced by a qualified

repair person using only identicalreplacement parts. This will ensure that thesafety of the power tool is maintained.

Additional safety instructions for sanders

Take special care when sanding somewoods (e.g. beech, oak) and metal whichmay produce toxic dust. Wear a dustmask specifically designed for protectionagainst toxic dust and fumes and ensurethat persons within or entering the workarea are also protected.

• Use this tool in a well-ventilated area whensanding ferrous metals. Do not operate the toolnear flammable liquids, gases or dust. Sparks orhot particles from sanding or arcing motorbrushes may ignite combustible materials.

Sanding paintObserve the applicable regulations for sanding paint.Pay special attention to the following:

1 Whenever possible, use a vacuum extractor fordust collection.

2 Take special care when sanding paint which ispossibly lead based:

• Do not let children or pregnant women enter thework area.

• All persons entering the work area should wear amask specially designed for protection againstlead paint dust and fumes.

• Do not eat, drink or smoke in the work area.3 Dispose of dust particles and any other removal

debris safely.

Electrical safetyThe electric motor has been designed for onevoltage only. Always check that the power supplycorresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.

Your DEWALT tool is double insulated inaccordance with EN 60745; therefore noearth wire is required.

Using an extension cableIf an extension cable is required, use an approvedextension cable suitable for the power input of thistool (see technical data). The minimum conductorsize is 1.5 mm2.When using a cable reel, always unwind the cablecompletely.Also refer to the table below.

Assembly and adjustment

Prior to assembly and adjustment alwaysunplug the tool.

Fitting sanding discs (fig. B)The tool uses 5" (125 mm) hook and loop sandingdiscs with an 8 hole dust extraction pattern.• Place the tool on a table, sanding pad (4) up.• Place the sanding disc directly on top of the

sanding pad.• Hold the sanding pad (4) with one hand and align

the dust extraction holes (5).• Press the disc firmly onto the sanding pad.

Setting the electronic speed control dial (fig. A)(D26453 only)

The speed is infinitely variable from 7,000 - 12,000 min-1

using the electronic speed control dial (2).• Turn the electronic speed control dial to the

required level. The correct setting, however, is amatter of experience.

• Generally, harder materials require a highersetting.

Dust extraction (fig. C)

Since woodworking with a sanderproduces dust, always install a dustbagdesigned in compliance with theapplicable directives regarding dustemission.

Do not use a dustbag or vacuumextractor without proper spark protectionwhen sanding metal.

The tool is supplied with an adapter for connecting adustbag or a vacuum extractor.• Fit the dust extraction adaptor (6) onto the outlet

(3) as shown.• Attach the dustbag (7) by aligning the open-

ended slots (8) with the notches (9) and fitting thebag onto the adaptor (6).

• Turn the assembly clockwise to lock it in position.• Alternatively, connect the tool to a vacuum

extractor using the adaptor (6).

Instructions for use

• Always observe the safety instructionsand applicable regulations.

• Make sure all materials to be sanded are wellsecured.

• Apply only a gentle pressure to the workpiece.Excessive pressure does not improve thesanding effect, but only results in an increasedload on the machine and causes the abrasive totear.

• Avoid overloading.

Do not sand magnesium!

Switching on and off (fig. A)• Set the sanding speed using the electronic speed

control dial (2).• To switch the tool on, set the on/off switch to

position I.• To switch the tool off, set the on/off switch to

position O.

Sanding (fig. A)• Start with the coarsest grit size.• As the tool produces small abrasion marks in all

directions, it is not necessary to sand with thegrain.

• Check your work at short intervals.• Always switch off the tool when work is finished

and before unplugging.

Emptying the dustbag (fig. C)For efficient dust extraction empty the dust collectorwhen it is about one third full.• To empty the dust collector, pull it off together

with the adaptor.• Remove the dustbag (7) from the adaptor (6) by

turning it counter-clockwise and pulling it off.• Empty the contents of the bag into a waste

container. If necessary, use a vacuum extractorto clean the dustbag, applying suction to theinterior surface.

• Re-fit the dust extraction adaptor.• Re-fit the dustbag.

Consult your dealer for further information on theappropriate accessories.

MaintenanceYour DEWALT power tool has been designed tooperate over a long period of time with a minimumof maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operationdepends upon proper tool care and regular cleaning.

Replacing the sanding pad and the speed limiterdisc (fig. D)Both the sanding pad (4) and the speed limiter disc(10) are consumable parts.The sanding pad needs replacement when signs ofwear become evident. The speed limiter disc needsreplacement when the sanding pad speed increasesdramatically when lifting the sander off theworkpiece.• Unplug the tool.• Loosen the screws (11) and remove the pad.• Replace the sanding pad (4) and/or speed limiter

disc (10) and tighten the screws (11), makingsure the speed limiter disc is aligned properly.

LubricationYour power tool requires no additional lubrication.

CleaningKeep the ventilation slots clear and regularly cleanthe housing with a soft cloth.

• After the tool is used in metal sandingapplications without dustbag, clean the toolusing low-pressure air.

Protecting the environment

Separate collection. This product mustnot be disposed of with normalhousehold waste.

Should you find one day that your DEWALT productneeds replacement, or if it is of no further use to you,do not dispose of it with household waste. Make thisproduct available for separate collection.

Separate collection of used productsand packaging allows materials to berecycled and used again. Re-use ofrecycled materials helps preventenvironmental pollution and reduces thedemand for raw materials.
