A warm welcome to our new Deputy Principal Ms Jessica Schadel who will be joining us in Week 1 Term 2.

Front of School Upgrade Despite the weather, work has progressed well and we should be occupying the new art rooms at the start of Term 2. The old A Block administration area has been transformed into 3 art rooms, a studio room, green room, store room and kiln area.

The renovations will move to E block, the old art area, during the holidays and a new compound will be in place. This will have an impact on some parking.

Work on Parson’s Pathway has slowed due to persistent wet weather and removal of asbestos . Please refer to the letter included in this newsletter regarding the removal of the asbestos.

Work is continuing with the power upgrade as well and will hopefully be completed by middle July. An upgrade of the canteen is also occurring and will hopefully take place in the holiday.

Gold Duke of Edinburgh This week 16 Epping Boys, 4 Cheltenham Girls and 5 staff are completing the Gold Duke of Edin-burgh Practice Expedition in the Snowy Mountains National Park from 2 April to 7 April.

ANZAC Day This important Day will be commemorated on Thursday 27 April as part of the school assembly.

Winter Uniform A reminder to all boys and parents/carers that commencing Term 2 full winter uniform is to be worn.

To all students, staff and parents/carers, I congratulate you on the many successes we enjoyed in Term 1. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday, see you at the musical.

STEAM visit to Parliament House - Mitchell Leggo

On the evening of the 27th of March, students from STEAM presented their winning project, the HandyGlove, at the Bennelong Innovation Fair, hosted by our local member John Alexander in The Great Hall of Parliament House, Canberra. This glove is designed to assist individuals affected by stroke or spinal injuries interact with their technology and devices in a more effec-tive manner.

We were able to present our ideas to many parliamentarians including the Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Turnbull, Foreign Minister, Ms Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Education, Mr Simon Bir-mingham, Assistant Minister for Social and Disability Services, Ms Jane Prentice and Minister for Science and Innovation, Mr Arthur Sinodinous. They all loved the idea and thought it was a great improvement upon available technologies.

Furthermore, we were able to discuss our ideas with industry officials from the Bennelong local area, discussions we wish to continue into the future. It was definitely a worthwhile and amaz-ing experience going to and meeting many people during the fair.

Fostering the engagement of our boys, our parents and our teachers is an important factor in building a strong culture of learn-ing. As Acting Deputy over the past few weeks, I have had a number of opportunities to develop my skills and build my existing relationships with students, staff and parents. We have all had a busy term with many varied opportunities for students, parents and teachers to contribute to this school community. From a middle school perspective:

In week 8, we celebrated Harmony Week and Year 7 & 9 attended an engaging assembly coordinated by the prefects. This assembly highlighted the importance of fostering an inclusive culture and respecting diversity. An Epping Old boy, Nawid Cina spoke at this assembly, engaging staff and students with his storytelling. Most significant though was his message regarding cultural stereotypes and the difference a small gesture can make, highlighting the contribution our school has continued to make to Mahboba’s Promise, an Australian non-profit organisation dedicated to the women and children of Afghanistan. Stu-dents and staff saw images of the school we have contributed to building and the young people in Afghanistan who are bene-fiting from this.

Year 7 attended their first BTM year group assembly in week 9 to celebrate their achievements at this stage of the year. Staff have provided feedback to the BTM Coordinator, Mr Sutton, regarding individual students who have been acknowledged during this assembly and received a certificate that reflects their contribution to supporting our school values; Respect, Re-sponsible, Engaged.

Year 7 received their interim reports at this assembly and have an opportunity to reflect on their engagement during the first term of high school. Mr Gordon, the Year 7 Adviser, and Mr O’Brien have read through these reports which will assist the Learning Support and Case Management team to support students who are finding the transition challenging. Parent inter-views will be conducted this term based on the teachers requesting this opportunity on the individual students reports.

NAPLAN notes and information have been given to Year 7 student with information to support the process. Students who require disability provisions have been provided with an additional form.

All students have now changed into their Winter sports option. For Year 7 this is a great opportunity for students to experi-ence a range of activities and represent their school in one of the many grade sports options available.

We are currently offering an opportunity for a small number of Year 9 boys to engage in the Links to Learning Program, which is an external school program that aims to provide individual students with broad experiences and foster a positive self-concept.

In week 9, Mr Archer, our Year 8 Adviser and I conducted a restorative practice session with five boys in Year 8 to address some persistent issues between two of these boys. This was a great opportunity to assist the boys to develop their capacity to empathise and reflect on their choice and how these impact on others.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break over our autumn school holidays.

The prefects kick-started Term One with a delicious cake stall at the swimming carnival providing great, nutritious fuel for our healthy, competitive swimmers. This proved very popular, especially with the teachers who bought most of the goods.

Halfway through the term, EBHS prefects hosted an afternoon tea for prefects of other schools, aiming to expand our net-works, learn from each other and build friendships. This was a huge success with great food, interactive games such as ‘Kahoot’ (a trivia app), and Mrs Hartley would definitely agree that water balloons were a hit on such a hot day!

Cheltenham Girls High School then reciprocated by hosting Epping Boys at their school where everyone had a great time through team work, games a capture the flag water balloon fight on another hot day and socialising.

Our main event this term was the Red Cross blood drive where the pre-fects volunteered a group blood donation at the Chatswood Donor Cen-tre. We saw this as an opportunity to do something powerful rather than just raising money for a charity in that one blood donation can save three lives. We wanted to set an example for other students and en-courage those over the age of 16 to consider donating in the future. Even though not everyone technically saved three lives that day for vari-ous reasons, it was the fact that they were willing to sacrifice them-selves for the cause which was important.

To finish the term on a high, the prefects organised Harmony Week in week 8. This consisted of a number of events to raise mon-ey towards ‘Mahboba’s Promise’, a charity organisation that supports many Afghanistan women, children and orphans with fund-ing for schools and ‘safe-houses’.

On Monday, the prefects collected donations as part of ‘water week’ in conjunction with our fundraisers to raise money for clean water and sanitation in Timor-Leste, and at lunch time pancakes were sold.

Tuesday was the official date of ‘Harmony Day’ which involved a formal assembly where the prefects made a video. We heard from our inspiring guest speakers Nawid Cina (representative from ‘Mahboba’s Promise’) and Ms Yang (maths teacher whizzette) and the prefect choir launched a number one set list of ‘I am Australian’, ‘You’re the Voice’ and ‘The Horses’.

Special mention must go to Harrison Lee and Noah Sutton for their musical entertainment. The remainder of the week consisted of an orange-themed mufti and a BBQ on the Friday, allowing us to raise funds for this worthy cause.

In conclusion, Term One has been busy and very successful. We would like to thank Mrs Hartley for her supervisory role in keeping us in check and Mr O’Brien for always supporting our goals. Thank you to everyone who has supported our charities and events, and we hope to continue the great work next term!!

Recent weather cycles have been difficult for the Duke of Edinburgh program this year, much to the disappointment of many of our participants. We were lucky enough, however, to have our Golf to Kilo patrols, of the Bronze co-hort, complete their practice expe-dition in Dharug National Park over Sunday 26 and Monday 27 March.

The boys achieved their task and have improved upon their naviga-tion, problem solving and camp-craft skills. Alpha to Echo patrols will complete their expedition ear-ly in Term 2.

I would like to thank our students, parents and staff for the support of the Duke of “Edinburgh pro-gram during these unpredictable weeks.

P&C - Susan Day, President

Codies are the New Tradies! Just as Sparkies & Plumbers & other tradies have been the engine room of the industrial economy, codies will be the engine room of the digital economy. They will be writing code in Java Script for their local bank or maintaining a website for a retail business. There is a conception that coding is only for mathematically gifted people and that it is highly complex however experts say it can be, but not necessari-ly! It can be learned fairly quickly just like a vocational skill. Courses in coding are seeing a lot of career changers and the age pro-file of students is a little bit older than first expected. How long it takes to qualify for a coding job depends on the type of job. About 150 registered Training organisations (RTO’s) offer qualifications, including TAFE, that are great for entry level jobs. Experts say though if you are a kid and you have done some pro-gramming at school, you might not need that!! Entry level salaries are about $50,000 ranging up to three times for an experienced lead software developer. The economy needs another 100,000 new ICT workers in the six years to 2021 according to Deloittes. (Info courtesy of SMH) Another high demand career area is that of Cyber Security. Australia has an acute shortage of workers with cyber skills hence the government’s 13 million injection into this area in the next 3 years. The Australian government wants to make Australia Cyber Safe! This is a well-paying career often workers receiving six figure salaries. Cyber Security people are ethical hackers! Currently there are many unfilled jobs in healthcare, banks etc. Job titles include Threat Analyst, Cyber Risk consultant. Many women as well as men are needed in this industry. Macquarie Uni in particular offers several degrees relevant to this career for example B. Security Studies with an ATAR of 75.

News from Social Sciences Term one is almost over! We can’t believe that a quarter of the year is already gone. There has been plenty of great things hap-pening in Social Science in the past few weeks. At term’s end, we will say goodbye to Mr Goulton as he moves on to other endeav-ours. He has had a positive impact on all students he has taught this term and his creative lessons will be sorely missed. We wish him all the best! We also have Ms Marciniak visiting from Macquarie University for most of Term 2. She will be teaching Year 7, 8 and 10 Geography.

In Geography, students have been actively engaged in the geoSNAPS competition. We have so far had several categories and winners from Years 7 through to 10.

Congratulations to Jem W in Year 7 for winning the summer cate-gory, Matthew Z in 7P for winning both the green and fruit themed weeks.

Also congratulations to Yusef H in Year 11 and finally to the very active participant, Ryan O in 7C for winning the seascapes theme. Some of the winning entries are featured below. geoSNAPS is now taking a break for the last few weeks of term one and will restart in Term 2.

Extra-curricular activities Year 11 Geography recently attended a field work study day at the Field of Mars Environmental Centre. A recount has been pro-vided by Josh B and Jonathan L.

On Tuesday 28th of March we completed field work studies at Field of Mars EEC as part of our Biophysical Interactions Unit. Throughout our study, we participated in environmental investigations, by doing practical fieldwork such as soil and water testing and looking at vegetation structures within the reserve. Furthermore, we ex-amined Strangers Creek with the purpose of determining the human impacts within the reserve. It was a valuable excursion that gave us the essential knowledge and skills to successfully complete our preliminary Geography course.

A big thank you to Ms Latif and Ms Woomack for accompanying and organis-

Teaching and learning fun Year 7 had settled in well in their new studies in Geography. Our Gifted and Talented students in 7C and 7P have been engaged in some practical tasks, including making models of the Water Cycle in groups. Some of their work is found below. Both the G&T classes will be participating in the Australian Geography Competition in Term 2 and are reminded to return their permission slips and $4 as soon as possible.

7A and 7I Geography have also been getting stuck into some practical tasks in Geography. In some of their first lessons, 7A created their own little world globes to be displayed in the class-room and to be used in their future Geography lessons. Some of the students working on their globes are featured below. 7I had a fantastic lesson learning about latitude and longitude by playing Battleship to help solidify their knowledge of using latitude and longitude to determine the location of objects on Earth.

Year 10 Geography have also been busy completing their Research Action Plans as part of their mandatory assignment. Students are working in groups to deal with the issue of waste management around the school grounds. The boys have been investigating the type of waste that is produced, high traffic areas and most importantly ways to ensure waste is disposed of correctly and sus-tainably. Students will present their findings to the class in Week 10.

East Timor project and World Water Week In Week 8 we celebrated World Water Week and introduced students to the idea of using water sustainably. The school was lucky enough to be visited by members of Epping Rotary and a presentation was made a one of the morning assemblies. Congratulations to Arthur L and Samu-el K from 7C who represented Year 7 and spoke of the importance of water. There were also excellent posters submitted as part of a poster competition and the three best are featured be-low. Thank you Mubeen, Ryan and Jared for your winning entries. We look forward to working with Epping Rotary to continue our focus on East Timor within the Year 7 Geography curriculum.

BTM - Kyle Sutton, BTM Coordinator “A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ~ Albert Einstein By connecting with each other through the Boys to Men program we have seen some wonderful connections made between students and students to teachers. Year 7 have continued to explore the Growth Mindset and comparing it to a fixed mindset in BTM lessons. Students have been asked to reflect on times where they were challenged or struggled to achieve certain goals. All students were then given oppor-tunities to develop strategies to approach their challenges and to reflect on the support networks that exist in each of their lives. The BTM period also provides the opportunity for classes to participate in a Resilience Doughnut workshop. 7A and 7C have al-ready participated in these sessions with the support of Mr Gordon and Ms Howard. The other classes will engage in these ses-sions throughout Term 2.

Mr O’Brien and Mr Gordon addressed all Year 7 students in the BTM lesson in Week 9. Over 20 students were acknowledged with awards for their start to high school and embracing the core values of Epping Boys High School. Congratulations to these students! All Year 7 students also received information about NAPLAN tests and their Interim Reports during this meeting. Please contact the school if you did not receive these important documents. Cameron Gordon– Year 7 Adviser

Year 8 have made a fantastic start to BTM this year. The boys have re-established themselves into the expectations of the Boys To Men program with maturity and have exceeded expectations on their commitment to learning and embracing this program. As a year group Year 8 have developed fantastic connections with the Year 10 mentors, allowing for continual growth and devel-opment with these exceptional young men as their role models.

Year 8 has also learnt about the effects of cyber bullying in the 21st Century. This lesson was both confronting and thought-provoking and eventually allowed for a shift in their understanding of the impacts of using the internet for demeaning others, both for the victim, the perpetrator and both their families and friends. Year 8 need to be commended on how well they are applying themselves to all facets of their learning in this program. I couldn't be prouder of them. Jarryd Archer—Year 8 Advisor

Year 9 have had an exciting term to kick start their last year in middle school. The boys have been exploring the benefits of medi-tation through the use of the ‘Smiling Mind’ app. The app aims to build happier, healthier and more compassionate people and is designed to assist in dealing with the pressure, stress and challenges of daily life. It has also been a very relaxing way to start a lesson on a 40 degree day and refocus the students.

Year 9 have also been focusing on goal setting which will enable the boys to have a clearer focus, effectively use their time and provide clarity for decision making. Another of our aims this year is to improve the student’s organisational skills through the ex-ploration of assessment booklets and diaries. During BTM in week 8 the students received information about NAPLAN tests sched-uled for Term 2. Please contact the school if you did not receive these important documents. Languages - Donna Desiatnik

We are very fortunate to welcome two Macquarie University students who have volunteered to assist in some of our classes this semester. Their participation in lessons offers students the opportunity to interact and develop their language skills and intercul-tural knowledge.

In addition, Epping Boys High School students are able to share aspects of their own culture as they forge a connection with our assistants. Many incidental conversations and Japanese greetings can be heard in the playground since their arrival which is a sign of the positive impact these students are making.

“Taro Sensei” is pursuing international studies as part of his Law Degree. He lives in Yokahama, which is near Tokyo, and loves to play rugby and sings in a choir.

“Yumi Sensei” is in her third year of a psychology degree. She is very interested in education and loves to play tennis.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This year, Epping Boys’ High School has subscribed Years 7, 8 and 9 students to a literacy website called WordFlyers. This interac-tive English program is designed to build students’ essential literacy and higher-order thinking skills. Each student in in these years has their own unique login and password. Many of the boys have used the program in various classes and their engage-ment with the program has been very positive.

A new school year and new subjects often brings some learning challenges for students. This can be especially the case for our Year 7s. So that our students can learn to the best of their ability, it is important that they acquire and practise literacy skills, such as punctuation, grammar and spelling.

To access WordFlyers at home on desktops, laptops and tablets, simply visit www.wordflyers.com.au and click on ‘Student’ to log in. Your child has their own unique login and password to access WordFlyers at home. Please feel free to browse the site with your child.

To fully enjoy the program at home, you will need, at a minimum: • Windows: Internet Explorer 10, Firefox 15 or Google Chrome • Macintosh: Safari 6.0, Firefox 15 or Google Chrome • Screen Resolution: 1024x768 • Flash Player: 10.56+ for older versions of Firefox • Sound card must be working • A high speed internet service. If your screen is slow to load or freezes, try the steps below: • Refresh the page. • Check firewalls / security settings / content filters as sometimes this blocks content like sound. • If you’re experiencing issues using Internet Explorer, please try a different browser, such as Firefox or Google Chrome. • Clear your cache – see ‘How to clear your browser’s cache’ at: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser’s-Cache • Modify proxy/content filter settings to accept larger files up to 5 MB in size.
