Services we offerThe Medical Photography & Illustration Department are able to offer an extensive Graphic Design Service. Our services range from the design of conference posters to freehand drawings for the illustration of leafl ets and academic journals etc.

No matter how extensive your brief, we’ll fi nd the right graphic design solution to target your specifi c audience. Whether or not it is a logo that is required or a brochure, we can deliver an effi cient and friendly service.

Templates in Landscape and Portrait for the creation of posters are also available for a small charge of £10.

Please note: no work will be accepted without identifi cation of funding; for example the cost code number or cash/cheque.

Other things to consider• If a child is admitted do not take unnecessary

blood tests. Blood tests are not necessarily required before treatment is administered.

• DO NOT GIVE ASPIRIN, NSAIDS OR INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTIONS.

• Please contact the haemophilia centre to inform if a patient has attended A&E or Minor injuries; so that centre staff are aware the patient has attended and the outcome. Call 01227 783166 Mon-Friday 08.30hrs to 17.30hrs. Answer phone is available out of hours.

Putting patients f irst

If patient requires DDAVP (Desmopressin/Octim) this can be obtained from the haemophilia centre (via on-Call BMS), Brabourne ward or the emergency drug cupboards at WHH or QEQM.

Treatment out of hours can be obtained from the following departments if the patient has not brought in their own Factor/treatment:• William Harvey Hospital Blood Transfusion• QEQM Hospital Blood Transfusion• Kent and Canterbury Haemophilia Centre

via on-call Biomedical Scientist (BMS) Pathology

• Brabourne Ward (KCH)

Don’t ignore unusual

symptoms!

Seek advice from the doctor

on-call for haemophilia.

Even bleeds/injuries that appear minor may be more serious in a haemophiliac. Contact doctor on-call for haemophilia for advice.

Emergency Treatment for People with Haemophilia and Related Bleeding Disorders.

If you have a patient attending A&E or minor injuries with one of the above conditions, please take the following steps.

Any delay in giving the appropriate treatment may have serious consequences.

Recognising a bleed:IntracranialTreat all head injuries as a serious episode whether there is an obvious injury or not.If a patient shows any of the following signs there is a risk of intracranial haemorrhage:• Persistent or worsening headache• Nausea and /or vomiting• Drowsiness or abnormal behaviour• Weakness of limbs• Clumsiness or poor coordination• Blurred vision• Neck stiffness• Loss of balance• Fits or convulsions

Muscle and Joint bleeds• Pain• Swelling of the affected joint or muscle• Heat over the affected joint or muscle• Tightness/stiffness• The limb may appear unequal in appearance• Loss or impairment of movement

Contact the Doctor on-call for haemophilia to get advice about treatment, via the hospital switch board as soon as possible.

Prompt triage and assessment of the patient as soon as they arrive in your department.Ask the patient for their bleeding status card with relevant information, including their type of bleeding disorder, baseline levels and treatment.

Treat patient, according to haematology advice. Administer appropriate clotting factor without delay.
