Additional Notes

Several types of stitches are mentioned in this section, many of which can be substituted for different stitches if you do not feel comfortable using a new technique.

I have highlighted my choices underneath each section so you can see the effect.

Cilia (lots of little strands radiating out from the outside ring) can be completed either as back stitch or chain stitch. There are 3 colours used in the Cilia: 3687, 3688 and 3354. You can follow the pattern directly, or get creative with your own modifications! In the photo (below) of my stitching, I have used back stitch for the cilia.

Flagellae (long strands coming out from the outside ring) can also be back stitch or chain stitch. Flagellae are all 150, and you can follow the pattern directly or get creative. In the photo (below) of my stitching, I have used chain stitch for the flagellae.

Plasmids (circular rings inside the inner ring) are back stitched using 3687.

DNA (loopy strands inside the inner ring) are back stitched using 3688.

Ribosomes are knots using 3687. You can choose if you’d prefer to do French knots, Colonial knots, cross stitch or use beads instead. In the photo (below) of my stitching, I have used French knots.

Cytoplasm (inner cell fluid filling) is half cross stitched using 151. You can choose to use one strand or two strands when completing your half cross, whichever you feel gives the most “watery” look. In the photo (below) of my stitching, I used two strands - but I don’t feel I achieved the look I was hoping for on 16ct Aida, and I think 1 strand might be more effective.

Lettering can be done with one strand or two, with an optional period after the E (so that it says E. coli rather than E coli. This can be a simple pin stitch, or a knot (french, colonial, bead, etc). Please note, scientific convention states that the first letter of the genus (in this case, “coli”, should never be capitalised! Even if you choose to add the period. But, as always, it’s your masterpiece and you are the master! I have used two strands of black floss (310), and a French knot for the period.
