ramblings if our speaker Jennet Conant "failed to appear". Thankfully, Chuck's report was focused and entertaining while Ford's vacant speaker's chair drew more and more speculation. Lindsay Ripley is recuperating from throat surgery and Tom Davidson from heart surgery. So many thoughts and prayers go out to Lindsey and Tom. Ford announced that the Spelling Bee team pulled into second place while the Cheering Squad held onto first again this year. Congratulations! Vivien Jennings confidently took the podium while the speaker's chair remained quite empty. Vivien provided excerpts from Jennet Conant's several books and did a nice warm up intro until 12:44 when our speaker, Jennet Conant, entered the hall and strode purposefully to the podium to deliver a well prepared and very interesting review of her recent book uncovering the secrets of Julia Child's formative years of wartime OSS service and thereafter her marriage to Paul Child. Julia had served with Paul in Asian OSS assignments during the war, returned home, married, and went on with him to a State Department posting in Paris immediately after the war… and learned to cook! Nice job Jennet. Sorry the airline chose this day to rebuild your plane in NYC prior to your departure.

Youth Camp Work Days

by Joann Kinney On Saturdays, May 7 and 21, Rotarians will spend the morning helping Laurie Mozley, Youth Camp Superintendent, get ready for the 2011 summer camping season. Laurie will be ready on May 7 with a list of projects the Camp needs done by the Work Day volunteers. She and the rangers will have organized and put out the tools and supplies needed for each specific job, so as Rotarians receive their assignments, they will be

able to get started right away with the tools and supplies they need for that job. For each Work Day there will be between 20 and 30 Rotarian volunteers working for 4-5 hours on projects, such as: Repairing tent platforms on the remote camp site. Putting up tent frames and the tents on the remote camp site Cleaning the screens and windows on the 10 "garage doors" in the dining hall Painting Replacing smoke detector batteries in all the cabins Splitting firewood from trees fallen over the winter General repairs (screen doors, steps, windows, gutters, etc.) Seasonal planting Raking General Camp cleanup Volunteers start each Work Day with coffee and doughnuts, and when the jobs are completed, they enjoy eating lunch together before heading home. No high level skills are needed, just the willingness to lend a hand. Any questions about Work Days should be addressed to Chris Boland at 816/472-4000 or [email protected].

Bowling News: April 27, 2011 by Dick Retrum

Need a New Roster Photo? Jerry Crabtree, our club photographer, will be delighted to take your roster photo this Thursday, May 5, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Muehlebach Hotel. If you haven't submitted a photo for inclusion in the roster, now is the perfect time. Come early and smile ;) Thanks for your cooperation.

in a nail biting finish. This was a history making match that came down to two teams fighting for points. By the

third game, the number of games won by both leagues was tied. The tournament winner would be decided by

the outcome of the two teams on lanes seven and eight. Club 13 had a slim lead going into the last five frames.

Dennis McKeehan, Ted Middendorf and Mike Prestia were bowling above their averages. But a bowler

on the St. Louis team ran up a string of five strikes in a row to bring the match just a few pins apart. Club 13

marked in all but three of the last five frames. The winner of the match and the tournament came down to the

last bowler on the St. Louis team in the last frame of the final match. Club 13 was ahead, but all Club 11 needed

was a spare on their last ball and win by one pin. They picked up the spare. The score was 795 to 794. ONE PIN.

Today we were back on the lanes at Ward Parkway. Our high games were: Ted Middendorf 222 and Wesley

Gill 211. Peter Ho picked up the 6,7,9-10 split and Ted Middendorf picked up the 4,7-10 split. Kent Verden

strung out seven strikes in a row but was still a few pins short of the 200 mark.

Next week is the season ending match for first place. Stay tuned.
