Slimy Yet Satisfying

Lindsey Ripley

Well, ladies and gentleman, we did it! We beat the odds and shocked the doctors who told me I was just

going to keep getting pneumonia until it killed me. KU Med was the only one who had hope I would eat again, but they predicted it would be years from now. In six weeks, the University of Southern California

has restored a sense of normalcy to my family and saved me from a short life. I will never be in a hotdog eating contest or master a beer bong, but I can finally enjoy life's simplest pleasure again.

Second only to losing my grandma, this was by far the hardest challenge I have ever been faced with.

Since February, I have been sleeping in a hospital bed because lying flatly caused me to choke on my own saliva during the night, but sleeping upright caused me daily neck pain. I have had to tell every

waiter and waitress that I will not be ordering anything and watch them look at me like I'm a cheap waste of their time. I have felt the guilt of watching people feel bad for eating in front of me. I have had

to hide a feeding tube every day when I get dressed. I have had pneumonia four times, once in addition to a collapsed lung.

With the exception of love, there is no greater gift to the soul than adversity. You don't always have

control of what happens to you in life, but you will always have control of how you handle it. Before Cletus, my anxiety was through the roof. I stressed out about everything, all the time. One doctor

prescribed me Adderall hoping it would help me organize my thoughts and keep me calm but all it did was make the anxiety skyrocket. Ironically, I have been more at peace this year than ever before. Please

learn from my experience and understand that worrying does nothing but weaken you. Do not flip your lid over something small. When you are presented with a misfortune, think of all the things you're

grateful for. You are the one who decides whether or not you are suffering. Whether it’s a traffic jam or a brain tumor, you are the only one who can allow it to ruin your day. "Pain is inevitable. Suffering is

optional."

Be patient with people. Do not make assumptions unless you know someone's story. When you see someone park in a handicapped space and then get out of their car and walk inside, do not get angry

with them. You have no idea what physical struggles they may be dealing with. When you wake up with a cold, think about the people I was in therapy with, who can no longer communicate or eat or breathe on

their own. When you're at the end of your rope with homework, please understand how blessed you are to be taking classes.

Above all else, when life gives you lemons, run straight into God's arms. Grab His hand and hold on with everything you've got. Do not be angry that He allowed it to happen. Let Him be the guiding light that gets you through every single moment. Pray. Express your gratitude. Feel His compassion and love.

At the end of all my notes, I thank you all for what you have done. This will be no different. Every person that has supported me will forever have a place in my heart. No comment, message, "like," prayer, text, card, letter, gift, phone call, etc. has gone unnoticed. I read everything you all say to me, and use it as

fuel when I am running low on hope. You have no idea how many "bad" days there are when you're trying to recover, but never once did I consider giving up and letting you guys down. Twice I have made

life-altering trips to California. It is 1,363 miles from Los Angeles to Kansas City and never for a second did I feel alone. This network of support and love is what keeps me putting one foot in front of the other

every day. I love you all to the ends of the earth. Although I pray none of you are ever on the other side

of this, if you are, I'm ready to return the favor.

"Only if you've been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain."

P.S. For anyone who is confused by the title, "slimy yet satisfying" is how Simba describes the first bug

he eats in The Lion King.
