President-elect Cooke Honored During Royals Game Buck O’Neil was a legend for the impact he made on baseball and the community. The legend lives on through the Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat contest. During every Royals home game at Kauffman Stadium, a
recipient whose contributions are reminiscent of the spirit of Buck O’Neil is selected to sit in ―Buck’s Seat,‖ and is recognized during the game.
Last Thursday, Aug. 4, none other than our very own President-elect Jerry Cooke was selected to fill
―Buck’s Seat‖ for his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City. Jerry was the
organization’s inaugural president and founder in 1964, and has since worked tirelessly to help children
realize their potential and build their futures. The organization’s current president, Michael Lawrence is
also a Club 13 Rotarian.

Last Thursday, Aug. 4 2011 Pete Burgess
At last Thursday’s meeting, President Marc Horner called the club to order,
thanked our three newest members and led the pledge. We looked around, but there was no song leader and no Carl Bolte at the piano. Have the musically gifted
gone silent because the last speaker belted out a song to carry her presentation? Jim Hill came up to give the invocation, followed by Julie Cogley’s welcome of
our 10 guests. President Marc seized the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of three dedicated 2010-2012 directors, Mary Kingsley, Robert
Thompson and Tom VanDyke.
Those Club members in recovery are moving ahead toward complete wellness. Past President Ford Nelson attended the President’s Wednesday luncheon, Janet Ellis
got the OK to move to rehab in North Kansas City today, and Lindsey Ripley is moving through the slow process of recovery from her throat surgeries. Good work
and a tip of the hat to all of you.
Past President Matt Meyer introduced the sponsors of our three most recent members, who made the
introductions of Tim Tholen, Roxana Shaffe, and Monica Massey. We had a slew of announcements. Jennifer Nelson began with details on the Aug. 14 family picnic at the Rotary Youth Camp. President
Marc came close to needing a chalk board to go through all his announcements… In brief:
- Aug. 18 from 4—6 p.m. is the Summer Block Party at the WallStreet Tower - Aug. 20 in Excelsior Springs is New Generations and International Service training by our
District Chairs - September 9 is the TyRo Music Party at Sally Bibb’s House from 6:30—9:30 p.m.
- Rotary Youth Camp Rummage Sale Sept. 9—11 - Need volunteers to work at the Camp on the weekend of Sept. 17—18
- Plus a detailed explanation of Strategic Imperative No. II. - Grow Club 13.
Tom Kirkwood introduced our ―Downtown Business Recognition‖ winner Chuck Mader, president, Kansas City Terminal Railway. Chuck’s acceptance speech surprised many by the shear amount of
585,000,000 gross tons of freight Kansas City Terminal Railway moves annually.
Jim Shultz, Jr. introduced our speaker and recognized the efforts by our members Carl DiCapo, Mark
McHenry and Pat Dunn to develop, fund and build the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial that will be dedicated on Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. Our speaker David Tanquary presented the Korean War in about 15
minutes, while managing to impart the history of the invasion. He elucidated an analysis of Korean terrain, the scope and sacrifice of bloody battles, and the unknown heroism of the young men who
fought.
Past-president Carl DiCapo took a few minutes to honor dearly departed Jim Shultz, Sr. as a great Rotarian. Carl explained how the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial came to be and who built it. He
said it was, ―Built by Rotarians.‖
