Introduction

This program was designed for presenting a basic knowledge of the eight natural health principles to children ages four to seven years old. This theme is readily utilized in a classroom, Sabbath school, or Sunday school setting, for children at an evangelistic meeting, or at home. With some adaptations, it could be used for eight and nine year olds as well. Adaptations might include changing the examples, vocabulary, and some activities to reflect their longer attention span. Younger children show interest and retain much of the information even though there are a number of new facts presented each time. If the children are wiggly, it may help to let them sit at a new location for a particular story or activity(i.e. a blanket on the floor, on chairs in a different place in the room, etc.). This theme is structured to take approximately twenty minutes per presentation, for a total of ten presentations. However, times may vary somewhat based on the size of the group and the ages of the children involved. You will find that some of the material is written out word-for-word, and other parts are more in outline form. This is not intended for word-for-word reading during the presentation. It is included in this format for those who might benefit from specific ideas on how to say the information. Illustrations and discussion of food items should be adapted to your class and location. Concepts taught using your own manner and words will greatly enhance your effectiveness as a teacher. You may wish to put in your own story or illustration from your personal experience. A wide margin was placed on the left side of the pages so that you can easily write a one word description or brief notes to help “jog” your memory as you teach. You will find a page of craft suggestions to go along with each talk. Some classes will respond well to having a craft activity at the end of the presentation, while others may find it works better to allow the children a change of activity part-way through the presentation. See “Music Sources” for information on suggested songs to use with this theme. The theme song “I Corinthians 10:31” was written specifically for this program.

Room Decoration Idea

Decorate one side of a room. Children’s chairs can be arranged to face the decorated side of the room. Possible items for decoration: Make a large backdrop out of felt, cloth or painted paper. Put two life-sized children (boy and girl felt or painted) running across

a green lawn in the sunshine. A tree on the side with felt fruits kids can put up. One could use a

fake tree for added three-dimension look as well. Place a real, fold-up-type picnic table with a pretty table-cloth on it in

front of the felt board, to the side. Use this table for demonstrations and for kids to place things on, or put them in a picnic basket.

Use a large boy and/or girl doll to use as 3rd

person illustrations (i.e. “If Suzy ate this food, how would she feel?”)

For a simple decoration, purchase or paint a large backdrop with a nature scene. Put a fake tree on either side of the back drop. Add a “picnic” table to one side to use for your demonstrations. You might like using a large picnic basket or box to keep all your props in.

Nutrition (Part 1)

Introduction Body = Machine Needs fuel and the right care to keep running properly. Story: There was an old rototiller in a barn. (show picture) It didn’t work, and needed fixing up. The gardener thought, “Oh, I’ll just buy a new one.” When he went to the store, they cost lots of money! He didn’t want to spend that much on his garden, so he decided to fix it up himself and changed filter, new gas, cleaned it, replaced some parts, etc. Now he was very careful with it. Can we buy a new body if it breaks? No, but we can sure treat it kindly and fix it up! Healthy = taking good care of our bodies. Ask them this question and have them answer it each meeting time, to help them remember the main point. Why do we want to take good care of our bodies? Main point of theme: The better our bodies work, the happier we are and the easier it is to make better choices.

What do you feel when you are sick? Happy? Sad? Cry? Is it easy to share your toys when you are feeling tired? Is it fun to help mommy when your tummy hurts?

The better we feel, the easier it is to make good choices. Illustration: Show children a toy truck, talk about or pretend to put a carton of juice (and/or water) in its gas tank. Why wouldn’t this work for gas? If our body is like an engine, it is very important that you choose the right type of fuel to keep it running well. Food = fuel

Best Foods Back at the beginning of the Bible, when God created the world, he said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;” Genesis 1:29 Activity: What did God create for us to eat? Grains, fruits, nuts, & vegetables. Use felts or plastic foods to bring into a basket or put on the board, or draw pictures of healthy food as you talk. What kind is the best food to eat? Natural foods = food that grows on a plant or a tree.

Document Title

Illustration: God puts a little bit of life in each plant/food. Each step in the refining process (chopping, squeezing, cooking, etc.) takes out more of that “life.” When we eat food in its natural state, that bit of life helps our cells by giving them life, which gives our bodies health. More broken down foods result in more broken down cells/bodies. Place these groups of foods one at a time on a little table. Which one is the most refined and which is the best choice? Which one has the most fresh/live vitamins in it?

apple (best), applesauce (best if no fresh fruit available), apple juice.

oat grains, rolled oats, pretend meat (i.e. chicken ate the grain first, fresh vitamins are best).

raw potato (not usually easiest for your stomach), baked potato (best), french-fries (not so good).

Is it hard to choose to eat good food sometimes? Yes! Does it always taste good? No, because we get used to the taste of the food we eat the most often. But, God CAN help you choose to eat good food and even enjoy it. The more you eat good food, the more you’ll enjoy it. Story: When Lana was a little girl, she hated eating a fruit called papaya Show picture of papaya. Every breakfast her mother would have some slices of papaya on the table and she’d put a few slices on Lana’s plate. Every breakfast she dreaded eating that fruit. It tasted horrible to her. She tried pinching her nose so it wouldn’t taste so bad. She tried just swallowing a big chunk so she wouldn’t have to chew it (that didn’t feel so good). Lana even tried sneaking away from the table. But, her mother always knew and would make sure she ate some fruit for breakfast. You know what happened? After many mornings of this, pretty soon the papaya didn’t taste quite as bad to her and after awhile Lana actually started LIKING it. Now, Lana loves the taste of papaya! Activity: White bread and whole wheat bread. Let one kid sit on a white loaf and another kid sit on a wheat loaf and see which is flatter (had more air). Make sure to open any fastener on the bag so air can escape as they sit on it. The white flour is wheat that has been processed a lot (doesn’t have as much life in it) and the whole wheat is more natural and has more life/vitamins in it. Which one was flatter? Which would be a better choice?

Sugar Do you think Suzy likes the taste of sugar? (use large doll) Hmmm, I do too. It’s sweet, but what does it do for Suzy’s body? It makes her teeth rot, makes her fat, makes it easier to get sick, and makes her hyperactive. Illustration: Show how much sugar is in these foods. Use a glass measuring cup so they can see the sugar adding up. Well, Suzy decided to eat a slice of pie. Oh, that’s 7 tsp. of sugar. Then, she decided to drink some pop. Oh, that’s another 10 tsp. of sugar.... Wow, look how much sugar she ate today!

Pie slice = 7 tsp. sugar Pop 12 oz. = 10 tsp. sugar Canned fruit with light syrup, 1 serving = 8 tsp. Jam, 1 Tbsp. = 3 tsp. Ice cream, 1 scoop = 5 tsp. Donut = 4 tsp. Chocolate candy, 1 oz. = 7 tsp.*

*These are approximate values that change, depending on the manufacturer.

Activity: Put a large felt picture of a blood vessel on the board. Hand out red blood cell felts (red ovals), white blood cell felts (white ovals), and germ felts (brown or black) to kids. Your body has lots of little tubes in it that look kind of like this. Inside the tube is blood. The blood helps carry oxygen and other good things all over your body (have the kids put red cells up). You also have white blood cells that help fight the germs and sickness (have the kids put white cells up). Then, sometimes germs get into your body and you start to get sick (have the kids put germ felts up). The white blood cells start fighting the germs and kill them off. At lunch time, Suzy decided to eat some dessert with sugar in it, oh no, now the white blood cells started to die (show them disappearing). Oh no, what will get rid of all those germs? Will it be easy for Suzy to get well if there is no one to fight the germs? We want to have lots of white cells to kill those germs. So, Suzy is going to put that dessert away, especially when she’s sick.

Eating between meals. We have talked about choosing good fuel for your body machine. It is also good to put good fuel in your body at the right times. (show toy car) Does your Mommy or Daddy usually put gas in your car when the tank is full or empty? Also, when you start on a long trip, you usually fill up the gas tank right? Our stomach (show where stomach is) is like a gas tank.

We don’t need to fill it when it is already full. And, when we are empty, it’s good to fill it up, not just half full, or we might get tired and hungry before the next meal. Sometimes when you feel hungry between meals, your body is really telling you it needs some water—get a nice big drink of water. Story: Washing Machine Story A mother started a load of wash. While it was washing, other members of the family got some clothes dirty and thought they’d just stick them in the washer to save mom time, even though the wash was partly done already. When mom came to check on the wash, it was still dirty. Oh, no, she had to start the wash all over again. That is like our stomach, having to start all over when we put more food into it before it is done digesting the first food. It takes 4-5 hours to digest one meal. When Suzi eats a meal, she should eat a nice full meal, then wait until the next meal to eat. This will help her food get all digested and her body feel much better.

We have been talking about taking good care of our “body machine.” Today we’ll be talking about exercise. What is exercise? moving

around

Why is exercise good for us?

1. It helps our blood (and oxygen) get around in our body much better.

Activity: Put 2-3 of your fingers right under the left side of your chin/neck. Can you feel something? That is the blood pumping through your blood tubes (arteries). Feel it again. Now, let’s all jog right where we are for 1 minute. Ok, sit down, and feel your blood moving. Is your heart pumping the blood faster? Note: If you have a stethoscope, listen to their heart pumping while sitting calmly, then have them jump around a little and listen to their hearts again. Wow, it’s pumping faster!

2. It helps you feel cheery. (Smile) 4. It helps you stay warm. If you have cold feet, try running

around a bit and they’ll feel warmer.

5. It makes your bones strong (helps the calcium stay in your bones).

6. It helps you burn up the food you eat so it doesn’t just gather into lumps called fat.

3. It helps you have strong muscles. (Flex your arm)

Story: One day, a little girl and her brother were having fun playing chase. Do you like to play chase? Oh, they had such a fun time…until the brother ran down a hill and then jumped from a wall about 4-feet high. When he landed on the ground, his elbow hit the top of his knee and OUCH, he felt pain right away. His parents came rushing over and decided he needed to get a doctor’s help. They took him to the hospital and found out his arm-bone was broken. Soon he had a stiff wrap around his arm called a cast. He had to wear it for six weeks! He could NOT move his wrist and arm while the cast was on. Finally, the day came for him to take his cast off. Oh, he discovered his arm looked skinnier and was much weaker than his other arm. Why? It hadn’t been moving around for 42 days. When you don’t move around and get exercise, you get weak and don’t feel very good.

Activity: Act out different activities. Ask, “Am I exercising?”

Kicking a ball Throwing a ball Sitting on the front porch Reading Running Jumping Swimming Laying down Walking a dog Doing push-ups Watching TV Throwing a frisbee Sitting eating a snack Using computer

There are lots of fun things you can do for exercise. Exercise is great for your body! Sing: My Body, Strong and Good (sing with motions, while placing smiley faces on board, or wave smiley faces while singing) Activity: Have children draw smiling faces.

Review Main Point: The better our bodies work, the happier we are, and the easier it is to make good choices.

What are we going to talk about this time? Can you guess? It covers most of the earth. We use it every day. It can be cold. It can be hot….Yes, it’s water! If God hadn’t created water, this would just be a dried up earth! Would that be fun? God knew what was important for us to live and enjoy life.

Activity: Let kids take turns picking objects out of a bag that remind them of water and how useful it is to have water. Comment about each one as they pull it out of the bag.

Faucet—this is where we usually get some water. Make sure to turn it off when you are done. Sprinkler—nice to have green grass to play on. Pretty plant—look how pretty this is? Dried up plant—what happened to this plant? It had no water. Swimsuit—could we go swimming if there was no water? Boat—how nice to have water to float a boat. Felt rain cloud—oh, so good to have the rain water our earth. Umbrella—it’s fun to walk in the rain. Glass—to drink water.

Drink Lots of Water Did you know your body needs lots of water to be healthy and happy?

1. It helps us wash out the INSIDE of our body.

Illustration: Put a glass or small bucket of water on the table. Have a volunteer come up and ask him/her, “Would you be able to take a bath or get all clean with that little bit of water?” When you don’t drink enough water, it’s like trying to take a bath with a small bucket of water.

2. It replaces the water our bodies use up. Your body can use up 8 glasses of water an hour when working or playing in the hot sun.

3. It helps you feel good (feel awake, stop your headache).

4. It helps your blood flow better. Would a toy boat go very fast in a small creek compared to a rushing river?

Illustration: Get a pitcher and glasses to show how much water to drink. Have children count the glasses as you pour the water.

A child your age should drink about 4, 8 oz. glasses of water a day—if it’s a hot day and you’ve been outside or exercising a lot, drink more than that. Note: 70 lbs. = 35 oz., 100 lbs. = 50 oz., 140 lbs. = 70 oz. per day

Does drinking pop (or even juice) help you feel less thirsty? Maybe for the moment, but it doesn’t give your cells the water they need. Pop has lots of sugar and chemicals in it and when you drink it, your body has to use more water in order to digest the sugar and chemicals. The fizzy stuff (carbonate) in the pop also stops your bones from absorbing calcium, which makes your bones weaker and break easily when you get older. Pop & juice usually make you more thirsty. Illustration: Put water, juice, and pop on the table. Which is the best one to drink? If Suzy had no water and only fresh juice, sugary juice, or pop to drink, which would be the best choice for Suzy? Thankfully, there is almost always water around to drink, because that is really the very best for our body’s need of water. Keeps Us Clean There are little harmful bugs called germs everywhere. You can’t see them with your eyes, but they are there. Germs hurt good things in our bodies and make us sick. You can get germs just about anywhere, especially where there are lots of other people and/or animals. It’s a good idea to wash your hands after being with lots of other people or playing with animals. We try to wash our hands when we get home from shopping, after using the toilet, when we come in from doing yard work or taking care of our animals, and before we eat. When you eat you use your hands don’t you? Well, if you don’t wash your hands, the germs can more easily get into your mouth. Illustration: Let me show you something. I’m going to pretend this white flour is a whole bunch of germs. (put your hands into it, then touch your face casually while talking, then touch your dress, then go shake hands with someone, touch their cheek, scratch your head…) Did you see where all the germs traveled? They are everywhere! What can I do to get rid of them? Wash my hands. (wash hands in a bowl of water with soap, then touch things again) Wow, are there any germs spreading around now? Keeping our body clean keeps germs from spreading. Keeping clean just helps you feel good. Don’t you feel so nice and cozy after taking a bath and you have clean clothes on? God gave us water to help us be clean and happy.

What did God create on the 4th day, way back when He created our

earth? Hint: It’s very bright. Sunshine! He knew everything on our earth needs sunshine.

Activity: Put sunshine felts on the board or wave sun-cut-outs while singing a song about sunshine. Activity: The sun helps us in so many different ways. What things use sunshine? Let children take turns picking objects out of a bag and talk about each one.

Flowers—bloom nicely with plenty of light Seeds—can’t grow into a plant without light Umbrella—we wouldn’t have rain if the sun didn’t make it evaporate (make clouds). People playing in the sunshine Flashlight—(turn off lights) we’d have dark night all the time if there was no sun. Coat—it would be cold all the time all over the world if we didn’t have the sun Happy & healthy child—the sunshine helps keep our bodies well.

Helps us stay well Sunshine helps us stay well! Remember when we talked about red blood cells, white blood cells, and germs? The red blood cells carry oxygen (air), which destroys germs. Sunshine helps your red blood cells carry more oxygen and helps the other good cells to work better. The sunshine also helps your body make Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps your intestines absorb calcium from the food you eat. And calcium helps you have strong bones. So, sunshine helps you have strong bones. Sunshine kills germs. Opening your windows, letting the sunshine in, and playing outside helps kill the germs in your body. Just even pulling back the covers on your bed, first thing in the morning when you wake up, while you run get a drink of water, helps kill any germs in your bed and makes it a healthier place to sleep. Activity: Kids place golf balls in the middle of the room. Then, get out a big sunshine or light and have them go scattering away. Shows how sunshine chases the germs away.

Sunshine

Spending time in the sunshine helps you sleep better at night. Sunlight helps your body make a special thing called melatonin. Can you say that funny word? Mel-a-to-nin. Your body uses melatonin to help you sleep better at night time. Helps us be happy Sunshine helps you stay calm and cheerful. Sunshine helps your brain make a special thing called endorphins. Endorphins help you be happy. If you are feeling sad, going outside for a walk or swinging on a swing can help you be happy.

Activity: When the children are sitting in their chairs, have them put a sad look on their face. “Oh look at how sad we are from being inside, let’s pretend to go for a little walk outside in the sunshine and fresh air to cheer us up.” Let kids follow you around the room in a line for a short walk or do jumping-jacks, then sit back down again. “Oh, look, now we can easily have a happy face.” Encourage the kids to put a BIG smile on their faces.

Activity: Draw a big sunshine on a piece of paper, then have the child draw a smiling face or person beside the sunshine. If you have several kids, you can draw a large sunshine on a white board, chalk board, or large paper, then let the kids draw smiling faces or people near the sunshine. Being out in the sunshine can help us be happy.

Today we start talking about temperance. Do you know what the big word “temperance” means? Temperance: being balanced, not overdoing anything, including good things. It also means not to use things that are harmful or hurtful to your body. --Get enough, but not too much, & have a variety. --Say NO to bad things and YES to good things. Exercise We talked about how exercise is good for us, but if you do too much, it is hard on your body and your muscles get really sore and work too hard. Food Lots of food is good for us, like fruits, vegetables, grains, but too much isn’t good for us.

Story: Illustrate this with a big basket of plastic or real bananas. There was a man that LOVED bananas. Well, when he visited a country that grew bananas, he was so excited and bought a HUGE bunch of bananas. Are bananas good for you? Oh yes. So, he sat down and happily started eating his bananas. He ate one…oh it tasted good…he ate another…oh it tasted good…he ate another…it tasted ok…he ate another…it tasted sort of ok…he ate another…it didn’t taste quite so good…he ate another…now it didn’t taste good at all…now he had a stomach ache. Have you ever eaten so much that you got a stomach ache? I have. Too much of a good thing isn’t good. Your body needs just the right amount.

Sometimes we try to eat just our favorite foods, which might be bread. But if we eat mostly bread, would we get the other good things called vitamins from the other foods? Illustration: Sometimes we like to eat just sweet things (show candy, & other sweet things). What would happen to Rueben if he often ate sweet things? Sweets are a fun treat once in a while, but not good for Rueben as the main food. Activity: Put out a plate of food that is all the same color and a plate with a variety of good looking food. Which plate looks prettier and better to eat? Getting a mix of colors to eat is good for us too. Did God make only one kind of food? No, he made lots of kinds of food because he knows having several kinds is good for us AND more fun. Let children bring up a variety of food for our picnic basket.

Temperance (Part 1)

Sleep/Rest Sleep and rest are so good for us, but if you sleep all the time it wouldn’t be good for you, just like working ALL the time isn’t good for us. God even wanted to make sure people got enough rest by making special times for rest like night time and the Sabbath. Would you like it if your Daddy slept ALL the time or worked ALL the time? No. It’s more fun when we get the right amount of work, play, and sleep. Sunshine Sunshine is very good for us, but being out in the sun too long hurts our skin and our eyes. Note: you usually don’t have to put on sun protection EVERY time you go out in the sun, just when you’re out too long for your body to handle. Activity: Name one thing to protect us from the sun? Show the children different objects that are used to protect us from the sun: eye glasses, umbrella, sunblock lotion, chapstick, hat.

Story: One time a man decided to climb Mt. Adams (a tall mountain) with some of his friends. Oh, they had great fun planning their trip and getting everything ready. They left early in the morning to get there and start hiking. They hiked and hiked and hiked. The sun was shining and they were having a fun time. They were having such a fun time that they forgot they were out in the sun for a very long time and hadn’t put on any sunblock lotion. They started feeling very hot, but didn’t think too much about it. Well, when they got home, they discovered their skin was really pink/red and really hurt. Oh, they hadn’t been careful and they got a bad sunburn. Their skin hurt for several days. Too much of a good thing isn’t good.

Illustration: Lay a long 2x4 board on the floor (for a balancing-beam) and let some children try walking across without touching the ground. Talk about how we need “balance” in the things we do in life, too much of one thing can make us fall off (not feel so good). A teacher helping hold their hand so they don’t fall off is like letting God hold your hand and help you make good choices to be balanced. Always ask God for help! HE WILL HELP YOU!

What does temperance mean? Not too much or too little, just enough AND stay away from really hurtful things to your body. Today we will be talking about three things that really hurt our bodies. Now, many of us probably have friends that use some of these. Please, always remember to be kind, polite, but firm and say NO to using any of them. Even go to another room, so you don’t get tempted. Caffeine I have something to show you. This is a pretty tree (show picture of a coffee tree). Here are the little balls with seeds in them that the tree has (show picture). Aren’t they pretty and red? When God first made our world, ALL plants were lovely and didn’t hurt us at all. Once sin happened, something changed in this plant and the seeds have a poison in them. Here is what the seeds look like (show coffee beans). Inside the beans is a poison called caffeine. People like to grind it up to make coffee or use it in other drinks like Dr. Pepper, Coke, or Coca Cola. When you drink something with caffeine in it, your stomach gets excited, then your brain gets irritated and tells the heart to start pumping faster, then you get more energy. BUT, it is a false energy, not like the good energy that comes from good food, exercise, water, fresh air, etc. What would caffeine do to Suzy if she drank it? It would trick her mind into thinking she wasn’t tired when she really is

(act out motions of having lots of energy, then slowing down and being very sad and tired).

It would give her energy all of a sudden, but then she’d feel tired, grumpy, and unhappy.

Suzy’s body would get lots of problems after a while and have a hard time staying well.

Also, once Suzy starts using it, it would be hard to stop. Caffeine has a chemical in it that makes it hard to stop (addictive).

Suzy could also get headaches, feel shaky, or her stomach feels upset (indigestion) and her heart gets overworked.

Illustration: If Suzy is given these choices, which would be best? (set items on table) Remember, Suzy doesn’t want to hurt her body. She wants to make good choices and feel well.

Juice or Dr. Pepper

Apple juice, water, or Coca Cola Sometimes people wake up tired in the morning and think they need some quick energy, so they drink some coffee, but it’s really pretend

energy and after a bit they feel tired again. They drink more coffee, but the coffee doesn’t work quite as well, so they try drinking more. So, which choice would be best for Suzy?

Water, milk, or coffee (when she gets up in the morning?) Tobacco Here is another thing that is hurtful to our bodies (show picture of tobacco plant). This looks like a nice plant doesn’t it? But again, when sin entered our world, now it is quite harmful. This is a tobacco plant. It has the chemical called nicotine in it. Companies dry the leaves of these plants and make them into cigarettes or cigars. Then, people light them on fire and breathe the smoke. Why would they do that? Do you breathe the smoke on purpose from your campfire? How do you feel when you breathe that smoke? Nicotine is addictive (hard to stop using it once you start). (show picture of cigarettes) What are these? Cigarettes have 4000 chemicals in them, many of which are poisonous (nicotine!). What would happen if Suzy decided to smoke? Every time she’d breathe smoke from a cigarette:

Small amounts of the chemicals get into her blood through her lungs. They travel to all parts of her body and cause problems.

Hard for her to stop Tobacco/smoking once she starts doing it (it’s called addictive).

It kills some of the little air sacs in her lungs & makes her lungs dirty. Activity: I’m going to pretend this is Mr. Smoker’s lungs (hold up a sheet of bubble wrap). Every time he breathes the smoke, some of his little air sacs inside his lungs die (pop a few bubbles on some bubble wrap). His lungs still keep working, but the more he smokes the more his air sacs stop working and the harder it is for him to breathe effectively. Alcohol Alcohol is something in many drinks that causes lots of problems. Show some pictures of drinks containing alcohol (or collect discarded containers). What would happen to Suzy if she drank alcoholic drinks?

It would make her brain send mixed up signals to her body.

It would destroy her brain (where you think & control your body).

It would be hard for her to stop drinking it (addictive) & hurts other parts of her body too.

She’d have a hard time listening to God’s voice in her thoughts because it puts that part of her brain to sleep.

Temperance (Part 2 continued)

Illustration: There is something awful that happens a lot when people drink alcohol. Show picture of crashed car. People sometimes think, “Oh, a little won’t hurt.” But, remember, it’s addictive and it’s hard to stop once you start. Drinking any alcohol hurts the ability for the brain to work properly. It causes lots of sadness and death in our country. Illustration: Use a mouse trap to illustrate temptations. A mouse tries to eat just a little peanut butter from the trap, then a little more, and all of a sudden, he is trapped (snap the trap with a pencil). Licking, trying a little may not seem like it hurts you, but like Mr. Mouse, the trap snaps eventually. What could keep Mr. Mouse safe? See how far away he can stay from the temptation (trap). Ask God for help, he will help you stay away from the little traps around us. Sing: My God is so great, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing my God cannot do…

God gave us something very special that we need every second, all day and all night to stay alive. We couldn’t live more than a few short minutes without it. Can you guess what it is? Try holding your breath for a few seconds. (demonstrate) Oh, that was hard! Our body needs air doesn’t it?

Fresh/clean Air Your body needs the gas called oxygen that is in the air. When we breathe in (take a deep breath) we take in oxygen, when we breathe out (breathe out) a gas called carbon-dioxide comes out. Carbon dioxide isn’t good for us, but plants like it. The air we breathe out is not the fresh oxygen anymore. But God made something pretty neat—the plants like and use the carbon dioxide and then the plants make oxygen to put back into the air for us. Did you know it’s actually good for our bodies to have plants in our house? They help make oxygen for us in the air, which helps make the air fresh and clean again. Illustration: Bring a branch or plant to illustrate and look at leaves with magnifying glass to see plant cells a little closer. Activity: Let kids “plant” plastic plants in a pot up front while singing a song. Have you ever been inside a room for awhile, stepped outside, then come back into the room and noticed it smelled “stuffy?” Probably there was no window open and the fresh air was getting used up and filled with carbon dioxide instead. Breathing fresh air is SO important for our bodies to work properly.

Get outside in the fresh air as much as possible.

If you are inside, try to leave some windows open, especially when you are sleeping at night.

Don’t breathe smoke or real smelly air.

Activity: Let kids put felt children onto the green hills/nature felt board to remind them to enjoy the fresh air.

Air

Good Posture Activity: Here is a balloon. I’m going to put it inside this book. Now I’m going to blow it up. Oh, this is hard. Will it blow up very well? What can I do so it will blow up nice and big? Take it out of the book so it has more space to get big? Oh yes, that would work well! (blow it up big). This balloon is like your lungs (what you breathe air into). Now I want you to slouch down in your chair and curve your shoulders. It’s like my balloon inside the book. Do you think you can breathe air very well when you’re pushing on your lungs, all slouched over? No. Now, sit up straight or stand tall (demonstrate). Do you think you can breathe a lot better now? (Take the balloon out of the book and blow it up.) Standing and sitting straight helps you breathe a lot better....it makes you look nicer too. Let’s get as much fresh air as we can this week! Activity: Fresh air helps our body feel “light” and happy like a feather blowing in the wind. No wind/air is like sitting sad and still on the ground. Fresh air gives us energy! Give each child a feather and let them blow it up in the air.

Air (continued)

What is something you do every night and often during the day too? Rest! It’s a special time that helps our bodies stay healthy and full of energy. There are different kinds of rest that God made for us. Body Parts Need Rest Our body parts need rest. Did you know that God made your heart to take LOTS and LOTS of short rests? If you listen to your heart, it will have a thump, thump, thump sound (can let kids listen to their heart beat or play a recorded sound). In between the thumps, it rests for a very short time and gets ready for the next beat/thump. If it didn’t rest, it would be one long thuuuuuuuump sound and would probably wear out and break or not even pump at all. God made our stomachs to need rest too. Remember when we talked about eating foods and how our stomach needs a rest to make gastric juices. These juices help break down food into a liquid-like mixture. If we keep eating often during the day, it doesn’t get a rest and has a hard time getting all the food digested. It’s good to wait 4-5 hours before you eat again. If you break one of your bones, you need it in a cast to let the bone rest so it can heal. But, if you leave the cast on for too long, your muscles get weak and the bone even loses some of it’s minerals. It’s the same with us, getting rest is SO good for us, but too much can also be bad for your body. Sleep Rest Sometimes we think, “oh, I don’t want to take a nap” or “I don’t want to go to bed.” That’s because we are usually enjoying being awake so much that we don’t want to miss out on anything, right? Illustration: Oh, look at Suzy. She’s feeling... (have a doll act motions)

Grumpy. Can’t think or remember things very well. Easily gets upset. Doesn’t have much energy. It’s hard for her to play happily. (whisper knowingly) Sometimes she’s even been hyper or crying a lot today. She’s been getting sick more often too.

What’s wrong with Suzy? Well, she hasn’t been getting enough sleep. It’s good to listen to our body and get rest when it needs rest.

Rest

Do you know what happens in your body when you sleep?

You grow!

It’s time for the body to heal from being hurt/injured.

Your brain processes thoughts and feelings into memory (sometimes makes dreams).

Activity: Let kids take turns pulling a plastic, stuffed animal, or picture out of a bag. Tell how each animal rests differently. Horses—often sleep standing up (even goats do too).

Fish—rest with their eyes open. Bears—sleep 6 months during winter. Giraffes—sleep standing up, just for a few minutes at a time (1-4 hours a day total). Hummingbirds—rest at night, their body temperature drops so they can survive without eating.

God made each animal so special.

Rest doesn’t always have to be sleep or sitting still.

Sabbath Rest God created the Sabbath for us to rest and keep special (holy). It says right here in our Bibles in Exodus 20:8-11 (read from your Bible if children are listening enough, or have a child read it)

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it, you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.”

Sabbath rest gives us... Change from weekly routine and work. Time to get to know God more. Reminder to trust God. Trust grows as we spend time with Him. Gives us time to serve others and reach out to them with God’s love. A reminder that God is the Creator of the universe.

People, called scientist, have proven that our bodies like having seven days each week, six days to work & play and the 7

th for a rest. If we

worked all the time, that wouldn’t be fun. If we played ALL the time, we’d

get pretty selfish and actually unhappy. God knew we needed one special day EACH week to spend more time with Him and our family.

Activity: Put felt church on the board and let kids bring up children to go to church, to remind them of the importance of Sabbath rest. Kids could also bring children felts up to put on a nature scene to remind us of being out in nature on Sabbath. Activity: It is good to spend extra special time with God every Sabbath. It’s kind of like a little birthday party each week to remember God made our world and we love God. Invite children to a corner to hear a Bible story about God’s love. You can also give them a party hat to wear after you tell them the story. Summary: Show pictures or give felts to children, asking them if it is helping our body rest or not. Sleeping in a bed. Going to church. Watching TV—we might be sitting still, but it doesn’t really help our

mind rest. Going for a walk—exercise helps us sleep better at night. Swinging or going jogging. Sunshine—getting out in the sunshine every day helps you sleep

better at night. Playing computer games—true, it’s not work, but it doesn’t give your

body the best kind of rest. Smelling flowers—helps your body relax and enjoy nature, a rest

from the busy world. Caffeine, alcohol, & tobacco—excites your nerves and keeps your

body from resting. Eating late at night—makes it hard to go to sleep or get restful sleep

because your body wants to digest the food first. Taking a bath—helps relax you for bedtime. Reading books or Bible stories—helps you relax. Playing outside with family—helps you rest from worries of life and

enjoy each other.

We’ve talked about a lot of things that help us stay well and feel happy. This time we’ll be talking about trusting God to help us. Activity: (Hand out little Bibles) Inside our Bibles God gave us a wonderful promise. In Proverbs 16:20 it says...

“He that handles a matter wisely shall find good, and who trusts in God, happy is he.”

Sing: “The B-I-B-L-E”. Can stand up to sing and use sign language to spell out the word “Bible.” As soon as we wake up in the morning, we get to start making choices to be healthy & happy, or sick and unhappy. What are some choices we make?

Should I drink some water as soon as I wake up?

What should I eat for breakfast? Good food, or junky food?

Should I wash my hands before I eat? (stay clean)

Do I want to play inside all day or get out in the sunshine & fresh air?

Do you find that sometimes when there is a choice to make, you know what would be the best choice, but doing the not-so-good choice is what you REALLY want to do? (like eating in between meals or complaining when mother says it’s time for bed). Making a good choice is REALLY hard to do sometimes. When you are having a hard time making a good choice, what can you do to get help?

1. Ask Mom or Dad to help you make a good choice. 2. Be around good friends. Good friends help you make good

choices. Friends that are doing bad things will make you want to do bad things too.

3. Jesus can help you any time and anywhere you are. (put praying felt child on board) All you have to do is say, “Jesus, please help me make a good choice.” And He WILL help you. Our part is to keep asking Jesus for help and choosing good choices and Jesus will help you do those good choices.

4. Become Friends with God. Do you run up and ask people for help that you don’t really know? Not usually. First, we get to know a person before we really trust him or her. Get to know Jesus!

Illustration: Ask a child to come up front and sit in one of the little kid’s chairs. Go up to one of the children’s chairs. Feel it. Act worried about whether or not it will hold you up. Were you worried about sitting in your chair when you first came to Sabbath School? Did you happily sit down or did you test your chair and feel it all over first? You probably sat down

Trust in God’s Power

quickly. Why? You knew your chair was strong because you’ve sat in it many times before. You trusted the chair didn’t you? You know chairs are usually strong and safe to sit on.

Illustration: Have a child that really trusts you fall into your arms. Talk about how the child trusted you because he/she knew you really well. Trusting other people or even chairs is just like trusting God, we need to get to know Him and experience His help in order to trust Him more. How do we become friends with God and able to trust Him to help us? (show item or felt to illustrate as you mention each one) 1. Hear Bible stories. When you hear about stories like God opening

the Red Sea so the Israelites could go across, or God sending an angel to shut the lions’ mouths to save Daniel, or when God kept baby Moses safe, or when Jesus healed people of leprosy, or when God delivered Paul & Silas from prison, you realize God will care for you, too. When you get older, you’ll be able to read the Bible for yourself! Sing: “Read Your Bible, Pray Every Day” with motions.

2. Pray & listen to God’s voice (in your thoughts) every day. We talk to our friends to get to know them. Praying is talking to God. We listen to our friends to get to know them too. God’s voice isn’t usually something we hear with our ears, but he puts thoughts into our minds. We can listen to God too. We can know the thought is from God if it agrees with His Word, the Bible.

Illustration: Put felts or pictures up of children doing various activities besides praying. You can tell Him “thank you” for your dog while you are playing with

your dog. You can say, “please help me set the table nicely” when you are

setting the table. You can say, “I’m having a hard time today, please help me.” You can say, “Thank You that I can taste my food” while you are

eating.

3. Ask God for help with your problems, listen to His voice, then DO IT. You’ll experience God’s power in your life to do what is right and feel so close to God, happy, and thankful for His help. Story: Tell a story of God helping you with a problem. Bring a prop to show them.

Trust in God’s Power (continued)

Trust in God’s Power (continued)

4. Spend time learning and enjoying nature. God created nature and so it teaches us a lot about God.

Activity: Let children pick out stuffed animals from a basket to bring back to their chairs to look at, then put up front in the decorations. 5. Go to church. Worshipping God and being with other Christians

encourages and helps you get to know and trust God too. Place felt church or picture up.

Activity: Let’s do a fun little finger-play about a church. 1. Hold your palms up facing you. 2. Intertwine your fingers. 3. Push your palms together like you would be praying, but keep

holding on to your fingers so the fingers are all inside. “Here is the church.”

4. Unfold your index fingers to form a steeple. “Here is the steeple.” 5. Open your thumbs. “Open the doors.” 6. Open up your hands and wiggle your fingers. “And see all the

people.” God loves you SO much. Keep trusting Jesus! He will help you be happy and make good choices.

Craft Suggestions

Theme Craft Suggestion

Nutrition (Part 1) Glue healthy food pictures on paper plate (old seed catalogs work great). Write or put a sticker on it saying, “Eat A Rainbow of Colors.”

Nutrition (Part 2) Make cards with fruit & vegetable rubber stamps or stickers.

Exercise Make paper person with arms & legs that hinge to move, or make jump ropes.

Water Decorate a cup or water bottle for the children to take home to encourage them to drink more water.

Sunshine Paper sunshine. Cut a big circle (or use a paper plate) and staple strips (rays) of sunshine around the edges.

Temperance (Part 1) Make paper hats. Use newspaper to fold or staple any style of hat. Protect yourself from too much sun and have fun.

Temperance (Part 2) Draw smiley faces on white balloons. Fresh air makes us healthy & happy, smoking or bad air makes us sad & floppy like a flat balloon. Can give out a flat balloon too.

Air Make wind mills, wind chimes, paper airplanes, or hand fans.

Rest Color picture of rest activities (sleeping, going to church, bath, reading, smelling flowers, etc.). Or, make a small pillow.

Trust in God Coloring page or item related to prayer, a picture of Jesus or reading the Bible, or Bible verse book mark.
