A NEW FACE AT THE CAMP:
Nature Notes: Did you know 2012 was the “Year of the Bat”? In hopes of increasing awareness on the awesomeness of bats and the need for conservation, The United Nations declared 2012, “Year of the Bat”.
Let’s take a look at these incredibly fascinating, delightfully likeable, masters of our night skies.
Bats are the only true flying mammals and the second largest mammal group after rodents. The bat wing structure is similar to the human hand, having 4 long ‘fingers’ with thin skin stretched between them. They have a small thumb with a nail on it which is useful for crawling, grooming and holding onto food.
Most bats eat insects and hunt by the means of a highly sophisticated system called echolocation. Echolocation helps bats locate prey by means of echoes. While flying, their calls bounce off obstacles and prey to piece together a sonic map. Some bats can even distinguish between different insect species using this skill.
When winter comes, bats will either migrate to warmer climates or find an area to hibernate; usually choosing a cave, mine, or a man-made bat house. During hibernation, a bat’s heart beat pumps about 660 beats per minute. When bats are awake and flying, their heart pumps about 1,000 beats per minute (what a difference!).
One misconception about bats is they all carry rabies. Less than .5% of all bats have been found to carry rabies, but if you ever see a bat on the ground make sure and observe from a distance. Bats are hardly ever on the ground unless they are sick. About half of all the bat species in the world are either threatened or endangered primarily due to habitat destruction, pollution, and human persecution. Because of this threat and endangerment to our flying friends, people across the globe have been building bat houses to give bats a much needed home. By placing a bat house on your property, you can give local bats a refuge space, keep them out of your own home, and cut down on the amount of insects and pests around your area each year. Make sure to check out Camp Lake James Bat Box located in the field by the tennis courts. It’s the ‘Year of the Bat’ so help some fellow bats today. They’ll be glad to eat hundreds of mosquitoes in your honor.
“2012 Year of the Bat”
I started off my culinary career at the tender age of 6, helping Dad prepare dinner for my three siblings and Mom on Lake Eries’ frigid shoreline. Later, I was fortunate enough to attend The Culinary Institute of America, where I kindled my passion for European and Mediterranean cuisine.
My family and friends call me “Dial a Chef” because of my love of answering culinary conundrums. From Private Chef to Saturday Night Server, if it’s food service, I’ve done it! And I’ve done it from New York to San Diego, Austin and Cleveland before settling here in the Asheville area, with my college age son and devoted Blue Heeler.
Baking is another aspect of the culinary field that I’ve always loved, enticing friends to stop by and see what tasty cookie or muffin might be cooling on the counter.
My other areas of interest include anything artistic, cars from the glorious muscle car era, bar room pool and dogs. Don’t get me started on dogs!
I look forward to bringing you more locally produced offerings with more traditional treats and creative special event menus. Please feel free to stop by the Canteen, introduce yourself and see what I’ll be featuring in upcoming weeks.
Suggestions are always welcome, and will be given serious consideration!
Bon Apetite
