DXM

The DXM product is a range of KVM extender graphics host cards in a mezzanineslot form factor (‘mezz cards’) for Dell M-series blade servers.

Dual and single-slot form factor versions of the DXM are available:

■ dual-slot: have an extended heat sink and occupy both mezzanine slots in anM640 blade, the blade can only accommodate one of these cards.

■ single-slot: only occupy a single mezzanine slot. You can install them in pairsor in tandem with a different card. Ideal for space constrained installations.

This guide tells you how to install and configure a dual-slot DXM mezz card on aDell M640 blade. See Figure 1 for an overview. There is a separate Quick StartGuide for installing single-slot mezzanine cards.

All kits include a custom mounting bracket with auxiliary power cables.

Prepare the blade

Important! Always use anti-static handling procedures to handle a DXM cardor to work on the inside of a blade. Keep liquids away from the area.

1. If the blade is not in a chassis, go to Step 4. If it’s used for 1 to 1, go to step 4.

2. If it is used for VDI, then shut down or migrate all VMs hosted by the blade.

3. In the VMware vSphere client, locate the ESXi server in the Inventory andput it in to Maintenance Mode.

4. Shut down the host M640 blade and remove it from the chassis.

5. Open the blade and remove any installed mezzanine cards.

Remove the Dell mounting bracket

1. Remove the screw on the Dell mezzanine card mounting bracket and retain.

2. Remove the two screws from the Network Daughter Card (NDC) and retain.

3. Remove together the mounting bracket and NDC from the enclosure.

4. Discard this mounting bracket and install again the NDC with the two screws.

Install the mezzanine support bracket (part A)

Important! The bracket only fits one way in the blade.

1. Move the support bracket (part A) into the blade so that the locating pins onthe bracket align with the two blade pin recesses. See Figure 2.

Figure 1: Installation overview

Install the mezzanine support bracket extension (part B)

1. Push the ends of the two arms of the mezzanine support bracket extension(part B) into the holes on part A so that it clicks into place. See Figure 4.

Figure 2: Align pins with the blade pin recesses

2. Move the bracket (part A) downwards. As the pins engage with the recesses, make sure that the sprung leg engages under the NDC. See Figure 3.

Connect the power cable

Important! The DXM card can install in one of two positions and requireseither a short power cable for mezzanine slot C, or long for mezzanine slot B.

1. Select the correct power cable, long for mezz slot B, short for mezz slot C.

2. Push the connector on the power cable through the square hole in thebracket (part A) and into the socket on the motherboard. See Figure 5.

Important! Make sure the alignment feature aligns with the socket.

Figure 5: Connect the correct cable to the motherboard

3. Record the MAC address from the label on the DXM.

4. Hold the DXM by the PCB or connector and push the free flat connector ofthe power cable into the socket on the DXM.

Install the DXM into the mezzanine support bracket

1. Align the DXM for mezz slot B or C on the mezzanine support bracket.

Note: The heat sink of the DXM covers both mezz connectors, and preventsthe installation of another mezzanine card.

2. Turn the insertion tool up so you can see the letters DXM and locate theinsertion tool on top of the hexagonal spacers on the DXM. See Figure 6 (A).

3. Push down on the insertion tool with the heel of your hand to install theDXM. See Figure 6 (B).

Figure 6: (A) Locate the insertion tool. (B) Push on the tool to install the DXM

4. Make sure the card sits level on the mezzanine support bracket.

5. Make sure the cable is routed through the cable management feature.

Install the mezzanine board support clip

1. Install the mezzanine board support clip on the edge of the blade chassis.See Figure 7.

Note: Install the clip on the near side to the slot where the DXM is installed.

If you need to remove the DXM

Be careful to avoid contact between the chip located at the edge of the DXMand the wall of the blade chassis if removing or replacing the card as this cancause damage to the chip. See Figure 8.

You must take care if removing the DXM card from the blade chassis.

1. Hold the card by the sides. Disconnect the flat power cable.

2. Keep the card level and lift out slowly and carefully.

Power up the blade

1. Close the blade.

2. Push the blade into the chassis and power up.

Set up the DXM for remote operation

1. See the Remote Desktop Configuration Manual on our support website forhow to setup a blade for 1 to 1 remote operation.

2. See the KBA 113 -  Setup VDI on our support website for how to setup VirtualDesktop Infrastructure for applicable MXM GPU cards.
