A s background (and t h i s is a r e a wi th which I an: no t exceea ing ly f a m i l i a r ) , t h e o r i g i n a l mil l ion-watt Costa-Rican s t a t i o n was b u i l t by Cont inen ta l E l e c t r o n i c s , I n c . , f o r a chap named blindcor on b e h a l f of t h e C h r i s t i a n Broadcast ing Network ("700 Club" t e l e v i s i o n show). Due t o trercendous Hemisphere-wide o p p o s i t i o n t o such an o p e r a t i o n CBN aban- doned t h e p r o j e c t , l e a v i n g C o n t i n e n t a l ' s p a r e n t corrpany, E Systems, t o repossess t h e f a c i l i t i e s . S ince t h a t t ime E Systems has sought d e s p a r a t e l y t o s e l l t h e s t a t i o n t o v a r i o u s goverrimert and r e l i g i o u s b r o a d c a s t e r s , bu t without success . It was f i n a l l y decided t h a t E Sys- tems i t s e l f would opera te t h e s t a t i o n a s a commerclel e c t e r p r i s e i n an e f f o r t t o g e t a r e t u r n on. i t s o r i g i n a l inves tment , and t h a t l e a d s

, us up t o t h e p r e s e n t .

It i s c o i n c i d e n t a l t h a t t h e c o n s u l t i n g engineer h i r e d by E Sys- tems ( v i a Cont inen ta l ) happens t o be an NRC member, and t h a t ' s how I got involved , due t o t h e unusual l o g i s t i c s of Such a case t h a t only

* a DX'er can handle p r o ~ e r l y .

S i n c e t h e frequency of 625 kHz was subsequent ly assigned t o a d i f - f e r e n t s t a t i o n , Radio Omega (TIXE), d n r i n g t h e %egawat te r1s l e n g t h y s i l e n t p e r i o d , a new frequency had t o be found f o r i t s r e i n c a r n a t i o n . My choice of 1560 kHz was accepted. But before any th ing e l s e could proceed t h e s t a t i o n had t o be p laced on t h e a i r f o r "observa t ion" , and t h a t was t h e purpose of t h e h i s t o r i c a l 8-March (1976) DX TEST.

The two 500 kw p a r a l l e l D0hert.y a m p l i f i e r s were not a t t h e i r peak dur ing t h e t e s t , and t h e t r a n s m i t t e r r a n a t only some 80% e f f i c i e n c y with 50% modulation; t h e t ransmiss ion l i n e was blamed. S t i l l t h e t e s t got o u t , and r e p o r t s a r r i v e d from Lima, Per6 , ar.d Western Canada and a l l a r e a s i n between. A subsequently scheduled s e r i e s of t e s t s f o r t h e weekend of 27-29 March never made it due t o nodula tor problems; none the less , my r e p o r t t o Cont inec ta l a p p z r e n t l y p l e a s e d them so much t h a t t h e y decided t o abandon f u r t h e r p re l iminary t e s t i n g and go ahead with t h e frequency converslon.

The massive, and c o s t l y , conversion inc luded a l l a s p e c t s of re - b u i l d i n g t h e t r a n s m i t t e r f o r o p e r a t i o n on 1550 kHz, i n c l u d i n g cozpo- nen t replacement , tower moving, and p a r a s i t i c hunt ing and e l i m i n a t i o n . New s t u d i o s were b u i l t i n San Jos& and l i n k e d by FI4 t o t h e t r a n s m i t t e r i n p a r a i s o , t h i s mainly t o p r o t e c t employees from RF r a d i a t i o n and t o s h o r t e n commuting d i s t a n c e . Fu ture nanagement of t h e s t a t i o n was or- ganised i n t o a Radio Mil lbn, S.A., i n t o t h e hands of Costa Ricans.

THE RLETRAK-88 RECORDING AMMETER

The new e r a i n medium-wave DX1ing h a s seen a parade of s o p h i s t i c a - t e d " a u x i l i a r y " equipment come i n t o use by a minor i ty of t e c h n i c a l l y -minded DX'ers; t h e s e i n c l u d e t h e o s c i l l o s c o p e , t h e spectrum a n a l y s e r , and t h e frequency counter . S t i l l ano ther i t em has enjoyed l i m i t e d pop- u l a r i t y i n r e c e n t y e a r s bu t h a s r e c e i v e d r e l a t i v e l y l i t t l e p u b l i c i t y i n t h e DX-club b u l l e t i n s - t h e c h a r t recorder .

The inked-stylus r e c o r d e r s most commonly a s s o c i a t e d w i t h polygraph and EKG equipment, i n c l u d i n g t h e Hea thk i t IR-18M, a r e of r e l a t i v e l y lit- t l e use t o t h e DX'er. Unless one wants permanent r e c o r d s f o r orthodox r e s e a r c h an o s c i l l o s c o p e wi th P-7 phosphor CRT i s much more convenient

r and economical f o r SAH s t u d i e s and t h e l i k e . Such r e c o r d e r s a r e a l s o u n s u i t a b l e f o r long-term s i g n a l p l o t t i n g and propaga t ion s t u d y , s i n c e r a p i d f a d e s , s ideband s p l a s h and atmospherics t e n d t o overwhelm and smother t h e graph. For such purposes a " s t r i k i n g " r e c o r d e r must be used. .

A s t r i k i n g r e c o r d e r o p e r a t e s by pounding a meter need le a g a i n s t coa ted graph paper , s c r a t c h i n g t h e c o a t and r e v e a l i n g t h e b l a c k under- s u r f a c e . The s t r i k e o c c m s a t r e g u l a r , rhythmic i n t e r v a l s , such a s once a second. S ince t h e graph t h e n becomes a s e r i e s / l i n e of t i n y d o t s , rap- i d i r r e g u l a r i t i e s due t o s t a t i c , e t c . show up i n unconcentrated form so a s t o be a l l but unnot iceab le . A s t r i k i n g - r e c o r d e r graph t e n d s t o resemble a s c r i b b l e wi th a b l u n t p e n c i l .

The r u s t r a k (minuscle " r " ) Model 88 i s such a s t r i k i n g r e c o r d e r . It i s a p t l y descr ibed a s a " r e c o r d i n g ammeter" o r , i n one popula r use , a " r e c o r d i n g S-meter". The rus t rak-88 i s a smal l , handsome i n s t r u - ment l o o k i n g almost l i k e a min ia ture t e l e v i s i o n s e t . It measures only 143 am. ; a l l by 92 mm. wide by 105 am. deep. It h a s a range o f one mil l iampere DC, meaning t h a t it can be d i r e c t l y s u b s t i t u t e d f o r t h e S meter of most r e c e i v e r s . The rus t rak-88 comes i n two models: one f o r 115V A C , t h e I 'or 28V DC. S i n c e t h e l a t t e r w i l l r u n on much l e s s v o l t a g e a t a s: r a t e t h e DC model i s recommended; t h e a u t h o r ' s 88 i s doing f in1 6-volt p w e r supply.

The rus t rak-88 i s a v a i l a b l e used b u t i n e: c o n d i t i o n f o r a p r i c e range of $45-850 US (1976), i n c l u d i n g , r o l l of graph pi- p e r .

The ammeter n e e d l e i s e. s l e n d e r aluminium t u b e of extremely l i g h t weight , s i n c e t h e e x t r a l e n g t h r e q u i r e d i s u n s u i t a b l e f o r r e g u l a r nee- d l e s , which would weigh do?, t h u s d i s a b l i n g meter opera t ion . A f t e r y e a r s of c o n s t a n t s t r i k i n g a need le may be ben t o r even broken o f f . An e x c e l l e n t replacement i n such a c a s e i s an 8-cm. l e n g t h of t h e f i n e chord t h a t comes wi th c r y s t a l ea rp lugs f o r t r a n s i s t o r r a d i o s ; anything

' e l s e i s e i t h e r t o o heavy, magnet ic , o r n o t r i g i d enough, and won't work.

A s h i n t e d p r e v i o u s l y , t h e 28-VDC model w i l l o p e r a t e on much l e s s v o l t a g e t h a n t h a t , and, s i n c e graph v e l o c i t y i s d i r e c t l y p r o p o r t i o n a l t o t h e v o l t a g e a p p l i e d t o t h e DC motor, t h e use of t h e maximum 28 v o l t s i s cnnecessary and was te fu l , e s p e c i a l l y of graph paper. The DX'er should choose a v o l t a g e t h a t i s most comfortable t o work with; t h e au- t h o r h a s chosen a 6-vol t power supply (Radio Shack). A t any r a t e , avoid u s i n g b a t t e r i e s ; t h e y w i l l d i s t o r t t h e graph r e a d i n g i f they r u n down.

The graph paper used wi th t h e rus t rak-88 i s s c a l e d a t one inch p e r hour wi th quarter-hour l i n e s in te rspaced . Even a t 6 v o l t s , however, t h e paper p r o g r e s s e s s l i g h t l y f a s t e r t h a n t h a t . Unless y o u ' r e lucky (hav ing found j u s t t h e r i g h t synchronous v o l t a g e ) , it i s necessary t o l o g s t a r t and s t o p t imes so t h a t t h e " r e a l " hours may be i n t e r p o l a t e d and marked on t h e paper once it has been removed from t h e instrument f o r s tudy . A pocket c a l c u l a t o r i s handy f o r t h i s purpose.

For use a s a r e c o r d i n g S-meter t h e rus t rak-88 must be connected a lone and d i r e c t l y t o t h e r e c e i v e r S-meter c i r c u i t . I f t h e r e c e i v e r S meter remains i n t h e c i r c u i t t h e 88 w i l l n o t r e a d f u l l s c a l e . A rec - commended arrangement i s t o employ a SPIYT swi tch f o r uommuting between t h e two meters .

The rustrak-88 can be s u r p r i s i n g l y va luab le t o t h e DX9er. With one a DX'er can l e a r n t o :

1 ) Determine t h e mode of p ropags t ion of a s i g n a l (ground-wave, sky- wave r combination t h e r e o f , c i n what p ropor t ions ;E- layer o r P- l a y e r ? .

2) Detect and p r e d i c t LSS fade- in and LSR fade-out t imes . . 3) Determine t h e RANGE of an unknown s t a t i o n !

4 ) Est imate t h e number of ionospher ic s k i p s t aken by a d i s t a n t s ig- n a l .

To i l l u s t r a t e some of t h e s e uses f o r t h e rustrak-88, n o t e t h e s e t of graphs on t h e nex t page:

"G-1" i s t h e f i r s t h a l f of a complete n i g h t wi th PJB (800 kHz). The low, s teady s i g n a l before 7PM (EDT/AST) i s r e a l l y no s i g n a l a t a l l b u t a c l e a r , open channel . LSS occurs i n Bonaire wi th no e f f e c t on t h e graph. But n o t e "Es" a t T M ; a l s o n o t e t h a t Es i s l o c a t e d e x a c t l y midway between LSS-Bonaire and LSS-Miami. This i s t h e p o i n t where LSS occurs i n t h e r e f r a c t i n g p o i n t of t h e ionosphere midway between t h e two l o c a t i o n s . The c r i t i c a l p o i n t Es can be used t o i n t e r p o l a t e t h e LSS of an unknown s t a t i o n , t h u s p i n p o i n t i n g t h e l o c a t i o n of t h a t s t a - t i o n w i t h f a i r accuracy with t h e a i d of a loop. 5 The s i g n a l then te.ces some t ime t o b u i l d up and l e v e l o f f - a t l e a s t an hour. The s l i g h t drop i n s i g n a l d u r i n g t h e B r a s i l i a n s e r v i c e i s n o t over ly ap- p a r e n t on t h i s graph. 5 Note t h e s e r i e s of r e g u l a r , deep f a d e s throu- ghout t h e graph (7:35 & 10:CO a r e good ones) . These sharp f a d e s a r e c a n c e l l a t i o n fades caused by m u l t i p l e S i s a l p a t h s , and t h e y occur sur-

r i s i n g l y r e u1ar;y - almost p r e d i c t a b l y . 5 A t midnight t h e mysterious 'madrugada e f f e c t s e t s i n , b r i n g i n g a s t r o n g e r , s t e a d i e r s i g n a l . The "madrugada e f f e c t " , f i r s t d i scovered by t h e a u t h o r , i s much more nota- b l e on weaker, more-dis tant s i g n a l s ; it r a y be r e l a t e d t o t h e "2300 phenomenon" noted on t r a n s - A t l a n t i c pa ths .

These graphs of PJB a r e an e x c e l l e n t example of normel LSS and LSR occurrences wi th a s i g n a l making a s i n g l e s k i p of t h e ionosphere. Mn1tipl.e-skip s i g n a l s w i l l n o t have Es and Er e x a c t l y midway between t h e t e r m i n a t o r s but i n o t h e r mathematical p ropor t ions . These p r o p o r t i o n s may be used t o detemaiae t h e cumber of s k i p s t h a t a s i g n a l i s tak ing . A d e t a i l e d a r t i c l e on t h l s gemera1 s u b j e c t should be forthcoming.

t "G-3" shows a p l o t of Radio Liberac ion (CT'iHQ) i n S a n t a Clara. This s t a t i o n i s a l o c a l - l i k e dayt imer i n M i a m i . The s t r a i g h t l i n e , repre- s e n t i n g a t o t a l l y groundwave s i g n a l , b reaks up a f t e r LSS. I n s p i t e of t h e v a r i a t i o n s a f t e r LSS, i n c l u d i n g many c a n c e l l a t i o n f a d e s , t h e long -term mean s i g n a l i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e groundwave com~onent i s s t i l l dom- i n a n t .

"G-4" was j u s t genera ted a t p r e s s t ime and was n o t o r i g i n a l l y in - tended t o appear i n t h i s a r t i c l e , bu t t h e graph i s t o o r e v e a l i n g t o ig- nore. T h i s i s t h e fade-in of WBAP i n Dallas-Ft . Worth a s "viewed from Miami. The s u r p r i s e i s t h a t t h e main r i s e occurs a t "Es-2", i n d i c a t i n g t h a t t h e dominant mode of p ropaga t ion is a double E-skip - with a " re - f u e l i n g s t o p i n t h e Gulf n e a r New Orl6ans. And t h e au thor alwavs ss- sumed t h i s was a s i n g l e sk ip :

The rus t rak-88 i s obviously a u s e f u l ins t rument , t o s a y t h e l e a s t , and t h e low p r i c e (compared t o frequency c o u n t e r s and o s c i l l o s c o p e s ) b r i n g s it w i t h i n reach of most DX'ers.

The 88 has one annoying problem, however - i t ' s loud. It sounds l i k e an extra-slow metronome, and it can be a s i r r i t a t i n g a s a d r ip - p ing f a u c e t i f you have t o s l e e p i n t h e same room wi th it, which goes f o r most DX'ers. A sound-proof box i s recommended i f you. p l a n much a l l - n i g h t graphing.

E, as used in the foregoing represents that point where a bounce point coincides with where refractiom starts t o take place in the ionosphere.

Broadcasting began in Canada with experimental XWA Montreal (now CFCF- 600), l i c e n s e d in September 1919 by t h e Marine and F i s h e r i e s department. xiJA broadcast a musical program t o t h e Royal Society of Canada I n Ottawa which was heard c l e a r l y . The second comlcercial s t a t i o n was CKAC-730, )!ontreal, t h e f i r s t French-language o u t l e t . Even t h e Canadian National Kailway, i n I t s p a r l o r c a r s , had i n - t r a i n broadcasts . By 1929 over 75 s t a t i o n s were ln business . The sovernment s t a r t e d c o l l e c t i n g $1 yearzy l i c e n s e f e e s , r a i s i n g $300,000 In t a x revenue.
