Visby – Rise and Fall of a Hanseatic City, Sweden For the 150 years before the start of the 14th century, Visby on Sweden’s Gotland Island was the largest and most modern city in the Baltic Sea. Located along ancient trade routes to Novgorod in Russia and deep into the Islamic world, Gotland was crucial to the wealth of the merchant Hanseatic League. German, Russian and native traders had great influence over life on the island and built impressive stone warehouses and 17 churches. Starting in 1270, a mighty city wall was constructed. But a short time later, other trade routes were established, and Visby was impoverished. Enthusiasm for ruins in the Romantic era and increased awareness of the need for historical preservation brought about a minor comeback in the 19th century. Today, Visby boasts one of Europe’s few intact ring city walls and a medieval cityscape full of the remains of ancient churches. This report shows the city and its ruins, walls and medieval heritage in midsummer.

04:00 Journal – News 04:15 Passionate or Crazy? – The Owners of Poland’s Castles and Palaces

Documentary Imposing ruins and magnificent buildings, set in idyllic landscapes – Poland’s castles and palaces attest to the country’s rich history. There are many legends associated with the Gothic Czocha Castle, the ‘Polish Neuschwanstein’ in the Karkonosze Mountains, for example. And once a year, the Castle of the Teutonic Knights in Gniew in the northeast of the country, serves as the backdrop for a reenactment of the Battle of Grunwald, which pitted the Teutonic Order against the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. And then there’s the home of Piotr Pawel. He didn’t even bother to get a permit when he began building his sprawling palace in Lapalice, Pomerania. It’s an architectural sensation and it’s not even finished. “Passionate or Crazy?” takes us on a journey to some of Poland’s most remarkable buildings and their owners.

Around 1,000 rescuers are on call around the clock in the North Sea and Baltic Sea in all kinds of weather. The protagonists of our documentary are the crews of the "Theodor Storm" rescue cruiser, which is stationed in Büsum on the North Sea, and the "Berlin”, moored in Laboe on the Baltic Coast. Saving lives at sea is rewarding, but sometimes harrowing, work.

Documentary The murder of women simply because of their gender now has a name: femicide. In Latin America, where machismo still determines the relationship between the sexes, femicides are particularly common. But there is also a growing awareness of the problem and women are now starting to stand up for their rights. The filmmaker Paula Rodriguez Sickert has traveled through the Andean countries of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru and tells the stories of women who were attacked or killed because they wanted to live their lives their own way. One of those women survived – but only just. Today she champions other victims of violent sexist attacks. The film shows how survivors, victims’ relatives and committed lawyers are fighting against the failure of justice in systems where the murder of a woman is more often tolerated as a misdemeanor than condemned as a crime.

Naples – City of Contrasts, Italy When overcrowding rendered living space scarce in Naples, the people started to build their houses ever higher. Europe’s first five- and six-storey apartment buildings were constructed here in the 16th century. More historic urban architecture has been preserved in this city than anywhere else. Tourists are attracted by the monuments, art and Mediterranean savoir vivre mixed with that touch of decay that makes this old yet bustling city in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius so unique. Naples has survived plagues, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Some think of it as the noisiest, messiest, smelliest city in the world; others rave about its beauty, richness and vibrancy.

On the Schachen, Jenny Wainwright-Klein, who was born in South Africa, looks after this outpost of Munich’s Botanical Gardens. In the eastern Allgäu, not far from Lake Alat, is where Ludwig II of Bavaria had Neuschwanstein Castle built. Markus Richter maintains the iconic fairly tale castle for the 1.3 million visitors who come to see it every year.

Quebec – The French Heart of North America, Canada When an expedition of French seafarers including Samuel de Champlain came up the St. Lawrence Seaway and landed in 1603, a small Native American settlement stood under the towering cliffs near the future site of Quebec City. Originally, de Champlain intended nothing more than to establish a small trading post on the spot. Eighty years later, a baroque church stood here: ”Notre Dame de Victoire”, now the oldest stone church in North America. More and more settlers arrived from France, and soon, a city had grown up. The soldiers and traders brought missionaries with them. One of the most precious treasures of the old town is the baroque altar of the Ursuline Convent of Quebec City, built during the mid 17th century. British forces repeatedly attacked the French settlement, eventually conquering it on 13 September, 1759. The new masters rebuilt the citadelle into a massive fortress to defend not only against enemy attack but also against periodic revolts by the French population. However, the inhabitants avenged the military defeat in their own special way – with "Revenge from the cradle”. With as many as 12 to 15 children, each family ensured the perpetuation of their French heritage. Today, visitors often experience Quebec as an authentic piece of France in the heart of North America.

Documentary When Saruul Fischer came to East Germany from Mongolia at the age of eleven, she could not have known how important her homeland would be to her in the future. She stayed there after the fall of the Berlin Wall, went to university, married and had children. Struck by a yearning for her homeland, she began developing an idea for the fashion label "Edelziege:” The designer has clothing manufactured in Mongolia using the finest cashmere and sells the pieces in Germany. Now, a Deutsche Welle film crew accompanies Saruul on a trip back home to Mongolia. The journey begins in the capital Ulan-Bator, where many of the relatives she regularly visits still live. The tour continues into the west of the country, where she spends the night in a yurt on the expansive steppe. Saruul shows us a life far from civilization, a life that may not exist in this form for very much longer. What does the fashion designer think about the changes that have taken place in Mongolia? How has this transformation affected the Mongolians’ affinity with their traditions?

Hallstatt – 3,000 Years of Salt Mining, Austria UNESCO declared the Hallstatt-Dachstein region in Austria’s Salzkammergut a Word Heritage Site in 1997, citing it as an "exceptional example of natural landscape of unique beauty and particular scientific importance, which also provides us information about early and current human, economic and cultural activities." This film is about a remote area that has provided mankind with such essentials as salt, timber and water for thousands of years. Salt was the most important commodity for conserving food for thousands of years and brought prosperity to those in possession of it. Salt mining began in this region some three thousand years ago and continues to this day.

Documentary Everyone is talking about climate change. But what happens on the ground when a natural system suddenly flips out of balance? This question has taken the Dutch adventurer and science journalist Bernice Notenboom on a journey around the globe – from Greenland to South Africa, from the Amazon to the Himalayas and across Europe. Temperatures in Greenland are up to 16°C higher than normal and the melting process is accelerating. How are the inhabitants of Greenland coping with this situation? Also, the tropical Amazon rainforest is giving researchers cause for worry. The warming of the surrounding oceans is, paradoxically, gradual drying out the jungle area, which is increasingly threatening biodiversity. Even Alsace is another big concern: In just 30 years there, the harvest for red wine has moved forward 30 days. But the consequences of global warming can already best be seen in the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska. Here, the ground is thawing out remarkably quickly. Thawing plant matter is releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases generated by their decomposition.

Aachen Cathedral – Symbol of Spiritual and Temporal Power, Germany More than 1200 years have passed since Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne chose Aachen to be the political center of his empire. He had his residence built over the ruins of a Roman bath. Part of it was the Palatine Chapel with its eight-sided basilica. This octagon forms the core of today’s Aachen Cathedral. At a height of 31 meters, the Palatine Chapel quickly became known as the boldest structure north of the Alps. The church stood as a symbol of Charlemagne’s claim to power as an heir to the Roman Empire – a claim reinforced architecturally by the ancient columns Charlemagne had especially imported from Rome and Ravenna. They proclaimed to the world that the new center of the Occident was here in Aachen. This was to be the new Rome. When Charlemagne died, the Palatine Chapel became his burial place, and its spiritual significance for the Holy Roman Empire endured. For 600 years, it served as the coronation chapel of German kings. From the very beginning, pilgrims came to Aachen to visit Charlemagne’s shrine and see the four famous Aachen relics: Jesus’ swaddling clothes and loincloth, the robe Mary wore at Jesus’ birth and the beheading cloth of St. John the Baptist. Charlemagne set out to forge a unity of the ancient and contemporary worlds and of spiritual and worldly power rooted in the Christian faith. Aachen Cathedral is an edifice of his vision.

Two universal artists who embodied the ideal of the Renaissance man were Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) and his son of the same name (1515-1586). They were among the most successful painters of the 16th Century, working as court painters and immortalizing Martin Luther and the Reformation in their paintings. They also ran printing workshops, were paper wholesalers, had a pharmacy license and were mayors of the renowned university city of Wittenberg. 2015 is Cranach year, with unique exhibitions in 12 locations in Germany celebrating Cranach the father and Cranach the son. In Cologne, the Cranach’s work is being digitized - treasure trove for professionals and art lovers. The Cranach Digital Archive (CDA) makes it possible to zoom in on even the tiniest figures or the fine networks of cracks in painted faces. Our film follows in the Cranach’s footsteps and provides insight into the lives, work and times of the famous painters’ family.

Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces in Brühl, Germany Clemens August, Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, who was from Bavaria’s Wittelsbach dynasty, had the Augustusburg Palace built in Brühl, halfway between Cologne and Bonn, where he had his official residence. The renowned architect François Cuvilliés erected a summer palace with all the characteristics of a residence. Its centerpiece is the staircase designed by Balthasar Neumann, which is considered one of Germany’s greatest Rococo creations, crowned by a ceiling fresco by Carlo Carlone. Clemens August was a passionate falconer, so he also had a hunting lodge built in nearby Falkenlustbusch: the Falkenlust Palace might have been an intimate sanctuary, but it was also of the highest artistic order.

Segovia – The Setting for Power Games, Spain Segovia’s old center is rich in architectural history. Its outstanding landmarks include the Roman aqueduct and the 16th century cathedral which was built in late Gothic style. This film takes a look at the decisive chapters of the city’s past including the Roma era when slaves built up twenty thousand tons of masonry without the help of cement to construct the city’s aqueduct or the fifteenth century when Princess Isabella seized the opportunity of her husband’s absence to have herself crowned Queen of Castile and Leon.

Documentary Graffiti, violent attacks, religious services under police protection, and even verbal gaffes by politicians: More than 75 years after the Holocaust, anti-Semitism is back in vogue in Germany. Anti-Semitic statements are no longer just a matter for neo-Nazis – completely different groups are tending to make them too. “There are now no-go areas for Jews,” says Berlin Rabbi Daniel Alter of his city. These are, for example, parts of Neukölln and Wedding with a high proportion of Arab and Turkish immigrants. He himself was brutally attacked and injured by Arab youths in broad daylight a year ago. But even more worrying than the open attacks is latent anti-Semitism amongst the population. For decades, surveys have shown that anti-Semitic attitudes are not just the preserve of a small right-wing minority but are often found in the heart of society: they indicate that between 15 and 20 percent of Germans have latent anti-Semitic views.

Riga – Hanseatic League, Amber and Art Nouveau, Latvia Riga, once a member of the Hanseatic League, saw foreign invaders as a cultural enrichment. The city is home to one of the largest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. The city was founded in 1201 by the Teutonic knights, who found it hard to come to terms with the freedom-loving citizens of Riga. There were two long wars between the crusaders and the city before the conquering knights were finally able to force the citizens to build them a new castle. This is now the official residence of the Latvian President. A major tourist attraction is St. Peter’s Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city. Riga’s rich history is reflected in its wealth of architectural diversity ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Documentary Everyone’s at it, everywhere: at home, in the subway, during the lunch break, on the computer, the tablet or the smartphone, and that with a passion that’s usually absent during the day-to-day routine and at work. Now this wasted creative potential is to be harnessed through "gamification.” The idea’s simple: if you approach irritating tasks in a playful manner, people can be motivated to do things that otherwise tend to bore them. The magic phrase is "instant feedback.” The participant’s performance is evaluated right away and success is rewarded. If participants don’t make the grade, they’re told where they need to improve. Will we live, learn and work better if our everyday lives, function like computer games? Or will gamification become a surveillance tool in a world where virtual and real competition merges and the chase for the highest score never ends?

Vicenza – The City of Palladio, Italy The citizens of Italy's Veneto region proudly refer to their capital as the “Cittá del Palladio” -- and with good reason. No architect made a more lasting impression on the buildings of this city than did Andrea Palladio (1508 – 1580) -- a towering figure of the High Renaissance period. His elegant designs show the definite influence of Greek and Roman architecture. As a boy, Palladio worked as an apprentice stonecutter -- first in his home town of Padua, and later in Vicenza. Over four decades, Palladio made an indelible mark on the face of the city. His most significant work is the "Basilica Palladina" in the Vicenza's central square. The marble façade opens into a series of double-storey arcades. The "Loggia del Capitano" stands directly opposite the basilica. Palladio designed buildings for twelve different clients in Vicenza. In addition, many wealthy citizens commissioned him to build villas for them in the surrounding countryside. These include the "Villa Rotonda" – an excellent example of Late Renaissance secular architecture. The German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe discovered Palladino's work during a visit to Italy, and was immediately drawn to the classical influence in his designs. Goethe wrote, “he has, with incredible effort, trained himself in the ancient traditions, so that he can reproduce them himself."

Bryggen – The Hanseatic League's Northernmost Bridgehead, Norway The Norwegian Hanseatic city of Bergen was one of the most important foreign centers for the Hanseatic League in the 14th and 15th centuries. The north German city and trade association founded a representation here in 1360. Bergen was a port for goods from many different countries. The German traders had their own working and residential district which today is known as Bryggen. This film shows how dried cod and blubber made Bergen famous. It gives insights into a tough society of men who had to follow the strict laws of the outpost. It also shows how homesick young men found successful careers.

Documentary The suspicions that put racing car driver Manfred von Brauchitsch behind the bars of Stadelheim prison in Munich in September 1953 were serious: high treason, subversion and "subversive activities for the benefit of the communists.” It was a steep fall for the son of Silesian aristocrats who was the superstar of the Mercedes team in the 1930s, a ladies’ man and a man who was always close to power and those in power. How could the "Darling of the Gods” become a spy and stand accused of high treason? And how was he able to escape from prison? rainforest is giving researchers cause for worry.

Cesky Krumlov – Jewel on the Vltava, Czech Republic Not far from the city of České Budějovice, at the edge of the Bohemian Forest, is the medieval town of Český Krumlov. The old town stands within a horseshoe bend of the Vltava River, crowned by the second-largest castle in the Czech Republic. It has passed through the hands of three powerful noble houses, each one leaving its mark on both castle and town: the Rosenbergs, the Eggenbergs and finally, the Schwarzenbergs. Krumlov’s long history has left it with a remarkable ensemble of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo architecture. The recently re-opened Baroque castle theatre was transformed into an opera house especially for this report.

Documentary The average German drinks almost 150 liters of coffee a year, that’s more coffee than water or beer. Despite illegal price fixing by well-known roasters, a cup of home-brewed coffee often only costs five cents. On many plantations the workers can’t lead decent lives on their wages. One example is Guatemala. This report highlights the connection between low coffee prices in the West and the exploitation of children, who toil away on the plantations of German roasters instead of going to school.

22:00 Journal – News 22:15 Caesar of the High Notes – Andreas Scholl and the Secret of the Countertenor

Documentary "I came, I saw, I sang” – exclaims Andreas Scholl, singing Julius Caesar. Starting with the historical figure, he explains why Handel chose the high pitch of the castrato for the epitome of the male hero in his opera “Giulio Cesare.” Castrati are men who can sing as high as women: around 300 years ago, they could become operatic superstars. But what creates the mysterious allure of the countertenor? This documentary observes Andreas Scholl at work at the University of Mainz and accompanies him to his concerts to uncover the secrets of this ethereal register and its effects.

Ferrara – Temple of the Muses and Centre of Power, Italy Ferrara was an intellectual and artistic center in the 15th and 16th centuries. Ruled by the House of Este at the time, the noble family helped transform the mediaeval town into a magnificent Renaissance city; its court was made famous by poets such as Ariosto and Tasso. Even today, the spirit of 15th century life can be felt in many buildings. One example is Palazzo Schifanoia with its intriguing frescoes.

Sousse – The Fortress of the Aghlabids, Tunisia Called "The Pearl of the Sahel” the Tunisian seaport of Sousse was a prize cherished by those who sought to control Africa’s central Mediterranean coast. During its nearly three-thousand-year history it’s been under Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Turkish and European rule. The buildings in the old town date back to the 9th century, when the caliph of Baghdad sent the Aghlabids to rule the region. In Sousse, they built a grand mosque, a citadel and an imposing fortified monastery where warrior monks prepared for martyrdom in battle. The Arab old town has been elaborately restored. The old city walls and the Islamic fortifications have been almost completely preserved.

Documentary Hunts Point was once a peaceful part of the Bronx but in the 1970s, the neighborhood deteriorated into New York’s poorhouse. It became the city’s most notorious red light and drug district, a tinderbox of social problems. Even though the borough houses the world’s largest wholesale market for fish, meat and fresh vegetables and supplies around 8.4 million New Yorkers with food, more people here are malnourished than anywhere else in the city. The air is also worst here and the number of asthmatics higher. But a network of activists is now working to improve living conditions in Hunts Point and we meet some of them in this film: an ex-banker who now runs a blog giving junkies and prostitutes a voice; mothers fighting for clean air; and Chickey, affectionately known as the "Mayor of Spafford Avenue,” an ex-junkie who now provides a place of refuge for young people in his "Candy Store.”

Pont du Gard – The Roman Aqueduct of Nimes, France The "Pont du Gard” in southern France is one of the most important bridges of the ancient Roman world. In the first century AD, the Romans built the nearly 50-meter-high aqueduct as part of the water supply system for the city of "Nemausus,” today's Nîmes. The Pont du Gard’s 265 meters of arches on three levels stretch across the river Gardon and compensate for the geographical conditions. The Romans constructed the aqueduct with a steady gradient and an average incline of only 25 centimeters per kilometer. The film initiates the viewer into the way the builders of that era thought and into the secrets of Roman civil engineering. This film shows not only the Pont du Gard’s architectural beauty, but also explains the principles of Roman hydraulic engineering, of which this huge construction is a perfect example.

Documentary Ricardo Laubinger lives in Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, where the presence of Sinti was first documented in 1407. The Laubingers have lived there for many generations. In summer they used to take to the road to earn a living as merchants and craftsmen. Even though Ricardo was only born in 1959, he still went peddling his wares and services. But since the collapse of the Soviet bloc in 1989 and the influx of Roma and Sinti from Southeastern Europe, they have been exposed to new waves of racist attacks. "Sinti and Roma,” people shout. “We are Sinti,” says Ricardo Laubinger, “We are German! We have lived here for 600 years and want mainstream society to understand that." He and other German Sinti tell their stories: the trauma of Auschwitz, poor but happy childhoods, Sinti culture. Does anyone know that famous German pop singer Marianne Rosenberg is a Sinti? A moving report about a little-known chapter in German postwar history.

Weimar – The City inside a Park, Germany In the late 18th century, the enlightened rulers of the small duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach realized that things would have to change and began inviting leading intellectuals to come to court and help develop political and cultural reforms. To this day Weimar is intrinsically linked with the great names of Germany's and Europe's intellectual past. Although it only lasted around 50 years, Weimar Classicism was one of the greatest eras in European intellectual history. It all began with Duchess Anna Amalia, who drew the great poets and philosophers to the small town despite its distance from the seats of power. In 1772, Duchess Anna Amalia invited the poet Christoph Martin Wieland as a tutor to her two sons. In 1775, Johann Wolfgang Goethe followed at the behest of young Duke Carl August. He would become the center of Weimar intellectual life. Johann Gottfried Herder arrived a year later and served as head clergyman. And Friedrich Schiller’s friendship with Goethe and his works for the stage led to a golden age of Weimar culture. This report visits the main monuments of the classical era in Weimar, for instance the Wittum Palace, the Anna Amalia Library with its priceless collection of books, which has been restored to its former glory following a devastating fire in 2004, or the beautiful palaces Belvedere, Tiefurt and Ettersburg. Visitors can still see the houses where Goethe and Schiller lived as well as the Ducal Vault where their remains are buried. These attractions are connected by an extensive network of parks, one of which, the Park an der Ilm, is arguably Weimar’s most popular memorial site.

Eyes dilated with fear, a razor blade, a face contorted with pain – Images of a circumcision in Kenya. It’s a centuries-old ritual that lives on in spite of the law against female genital mutilation adopted in 2011. The resistance from the ethnic groups that do not want to depart from the old traditions is too great, as is the pressure on the girls who allow themselves to be "voluntarily” circumcised for fear of not finding a husband. The Kenyan filmmaker Beryl Magoko traveled to her home village in the Kuria District and made a documentary in the face of great adversity about the circumcision of girls and women. With shocking accuracy, she shows the cruel practice of genital mutilation whilst still dispensing with the bloody details. Faces and stories of women and girls you will not forget...

Mérida – Aqueducts and Roman Ruins, Spain The Romans founded Mérida in Spain’s Extremadura region in 27 BC as "Emerita Augusta,” a place of retirement for deserving veterans of the Spanish campaigns and quickly allowed them to establish a strong presence in the west of the country. Laid down in accordance with Rome’s tried and tested urban planning principles, Emerita Augusta quickly grew into an important cultural and administrative center. Today its many beautifully preserved buildings still give an impression of life, commerce and leisure in Roman times. The city’s prosperity was based on its water supply: The Cornalvo Reservoir with its 2,000- year-old dam and the Los Milagros Aqueduct are just two examples of the Roman architects’ and engineers’ technical skills. Our film follows the path of the water into Mérida’s buildings and relates brief episodes in the lives of their inhabitants and their servants, everyday tales played out between the great cosmological mosaic and the atrium in the Casa del Mitraeo. And after business came pleasure: the comedies of Plautus are supposed to have been staged in the theater with it monumental two-story fly tower, and you can still sense the excitement in the oval amphitheater where 15,000 spectators once cheered on their gladiators. The legacy of stone from the Roman period in Mérida is full of vitality.

02:30 Real Berliners – Documentary

What is a German these days? Matondo (20), Bahar (29) and Daniel (18) were born and bred in Berlin. But looking at them, it’s clear that their parents came from the Congo, Persia and Azerbaijan. It’s something they’re reminded of a lot in their everyday lives. This film asks about these young people’s sense of identity. It wants to find out how accepted by the majority of the population and by politicians they feel.

The Salafis are the fastest growing religious group in Europe. Their aim is to remake society in their own image. Salafism is a manifestation of Islam that calls for a return to the lifestyle of the faith’s pious ancestors. Thousands of young men have become fascinated by the Jihadists’ propaganda and set off to fight in the "Holy War.” And many girls and women are increasingly drawn to the romance of Jihad. They believe that it is honorable to support the men in the fight against the infidels. The Internet has become the second battlefield: The Islamist fighters demonstrate their power in video clips, smilingly showing the world executions and severed heads to cries of "Allahu Akbar.” Our report provides insights into the Salafis’ networks, a search that takes us to Germany, France, Austria, Britain and Iraq.

Pompeii – A Journey Back in Time, Italy Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD releasing a vast flow of mud and lava that destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii and killed some 16,000 people. It was a terrible disaster but also a windfall for modern science. A layer of ash and pumice four to six meters deep buried and conserved the prosperous trading town. Excavations now provide a detailed and authentic picture of daily life in the early imperial Roman era. Now, another destructive force imperils the ancient ruins: thieves, millions of tourists, and the ravages of time are taking their toll.

Documentary Some space scientists believe it’s a suicide mission, but Stephan thinks it’s an opportunity to expand his horizons: He wants to emigrate to Mars. The announcement by a Dutch entrepreneur that he intended to launch a manned mission to Mars in 2022 felt like a promise to him. Along with 200,000 other people all around the world, he applied. Now he has been short-listed. If he passes the next hurdles of the application process, seven-years of astronaut training will start in three years’ time. But that’s only if Mars One manages to deal with the technical and financial challenges of the mission. If Stephan is really chosen for the mission, he’ll also have to say goodbye to Earth forever – and to his wife and three children too. There is no plan for a return trip.

22:15 The End of Chance – The Power of Algorithms Documentary Almost everything is recorded and saved. We constantly produce data about our environment and ourselves via our smartphones. Sensors and cameras in our phones, vehicles and computers detect our current location and what we’re doing. Scientists analyze this wealth of data and use the past to calculate the future – a new field called "predictive analytics.” There are now programs that predict how we’re likely to act and what preferences we have. And there are a lot of people who want this knowledge. That’s because the more precise the algorithms become, the more likely companies are to maximize profits, minimize risks and predict conflicts. Or not? What price does a society managed by algorithms have to pay?

Peking Man from Chou-k'ou-tien – China In the 1920s and 30s leading archaeologists from all over the world came to Zhoukoudian, southwest of Beijing, to participate in one of the largest excavations in history. They were looking for evidence of an intermediate stage in human evolution. After months of digging, the first skull that could be used to infer the size of the brain was found. A direct human ancestor had been discovered: "Peking Man.” The Chinese paleontologist, Professor Jia Lanpo, who died in 2001 at the age of 92, was a wealth of information about the history of this unique excavation.
