    Important notes or users in the U.K.

    Mains plug

    This apparatus is ftted with an approved 13Amp plug. To change a use in this type o

    plug proceed as ollows:

    1 Remove use cover and use.2 Fix new use which should be a BS1362

    5 Amp, A.S.T.A. or BSI approved type.

    3 Reft the use cover.

    I the ftted plug is not suitable or your socket

    outlets, it should be cut o and an appropriate

    plug ftted in its place.

    I the mains plug contains a use, this should

    have a value o 5 Amp. I a plug without a use

    is used, the use at the distribution board

    should not be greater than 5 Amp.

    Note: The severed plug must be disposed of to

    avoid a possible shock hazard should it be

    inserted into a 13 Amp socket elsewhere.

    How to connect a plug

    The wires in the mains lead are coloured with

    the ollowing code: blue = neutral (N),brown = live (L).

    As these colours may not correspond with the

    colour markings identiying the terminals in

    your plug, proceed as ollows:

    Connect the blue wire to the terminal

    marked N or coloured black.

    Connect the brown wire to the terminal

    marked L or coloured red.

    Do not connect either wire to the earth

    terminal in the plug, marked E (or e) or

    coloured green (or green and yellow).

    Beore replacing the plug cover, make certain

    that the cord grip is clamped over the sheath

    o the lead - not simply over the two wires.

    CAUTION!High voltage! Do not open thedevice. You run the risk o getting

    The machine does not contain anyuser-serviceable parts. Please leaveall maintenance work to qualifedpersonnel.

    Setup precautions

    Finding a suitable location Place the set on a at, hard and stablesurace. Do not place the set on a carpet.

    Do not position the set on top oother equipment that might heat it up(e.g., receiver or amplifer).

    Do not put anything under the set(e.g., CDs, magazines).

    Install this unit near the AC outlet andwhere the AC power plug can bereached easily.

    Space or ventilation Place the apparatus in a location withadequate ventilation to prevent internalheat build up. Allow at least 10 cm (4)clearance rom the rear and the top othe set and 5 cm (2) rom the let andright to prevent overheating.

    Avoid high temperatures, moisture,water and dust

    Apparatus must not be exposed todripping or splashing. Do not place any sources o dangeron the apparatus (e.g., liquid flledobjects, lighted candles).

    Cleaning discs

    Some problems occur because the discinside the recorder is dirty (rozen picture,sound disruptions, picture distortions). Toavoid these problems, discs should becleaned on a regular basis.

    To clean a disc, use a micro fbre cleaningcloth and wipe the disc rom the centreto the edge in a straight line.

    CAUTION!Do not use solvents such as benzene,thinner, commercially available cleaners,or anti-static sprays intended or discs.

    HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

    handling care

    The hard disk drive (HDD) has a highstorage density that enables longrecording duration and high speed dataaccess. Depending on the setupenvironment and handling, some contentmay be damaged resulting in ailure oplayback and recording. To avoid damageto the HDD and losing important data,observe ollowing precautions:

    Do not move the recorder or subjectit to vibration.

    Do not remove the AC power plugrom the mains socket without switchingthe recorder to standby mode.

    WARNING!The HDD is not a device or storingrecorded content permanently. Werecommend that you copy the importantvideo content to a recordable DVD as

    backup.

    This recorder has a built-in hard diskdrive (HDD) and you can record morethan 130 hours o video.

    Note: These values are estimates only.Parts o the HDD storage capacity will bereserved or the operations o thisrecorder and time shiting.

    This recorder allows you to enjoy theexibility to keep recordings in the HDD

    or copy to a recordable DVD or utureplayback.

    Furthermore, you can take advantage oeatures like Instant Replay, or PauseLive TV; see the section Control TVprogrammes.

    Beore you can start using this recorder,you must complete the basic connectionsand set-up in three easy steps.

    Special Features

    Time Shit BuerOnce you switch on this recorder, theprogramme shown on the TV will bestored into the Time Shit Buer. It actsas a temporary storage o yourrecordings. The contents willautomatically be deleted ater 6 hours,when you turn o this recorder or whenyou switch it to standby mode. To storethe contents on the hard disk, you haveto mark the segment in the Time Shit

    Buer or recording to prevent themrom being deleted.

    Instant ReplayYou can repeat the scene o a live TVprogramme by pressing thekey on theremote control, as oten as you like.

    To return to the live TV programme,press and hold.

    Pause Live TVA live TV programme is now under yourcontrol. You can pause the programmeby pressing PAUSEkey. Resumeplayback at the scene it was interruptedby pressing the PLAYkey.

    To return to the live TV programme,press and hold.

    Direct Recording to DVDThis eature enables you to record

    content directly on to a recordable DVD.

    Press the DVD REC key on the remotecontrol to activate direct recording tothe recordable DVD.

    This is a simple programming system orrecorders. To use it, enter theprogramming number associated withyour television programme. You can fndthis number in your avourite listingsmagazine.

    Philips DVD recorders support dualmedia recording the ability to createrecordings on + and discs(DVD+R/+RW, DVDR /RW).

    i.Link is also known as FireWire andIEEE1394. This connection is used or

    the transer o high bandwidth digitalsignals as used by digital video (DV)camcorders. It carries both audio andvideo signals via a single cable.

    TUNER Switches to the recorders tuner mode

    (TV channel).

    d DVD REC Activates the direct recording to DVD

    mode.

    eTV/DVD Switch between playback rom the

    additional devices (connected via theEXT2 scart socket) and playback romthe DVD recorder.

    f CH+ /- While in tuner mode, selects the next/

    previous TV channel.

    g TIMER Enters/exits the timer recording menu.

    h INFO Displays the Time Shit video bar. It

    shows the timing o the TV programmesstored in the temporary HDD storage.

    i OK Stores/confrms an entry. Confrms a selection.

    jWX Cursor keys or moving to the let/ right

    or making a orward/reverse search. In time shit mode, useX key to jump

    orward 30 seconds and W key to jumpbackward by 10 seconds.

    Using the remote control

    A Open the battery compartment.

    B Insert two batteries o type R06 or AA,ollowing the indications (+-) insidethe compartment.

    C Close the cover.

    D Aim the remote control directly at theremote sensor (IR) on the ront panel.

    E Select the source you want to control bypressing the TUNER, HDD or DVD keyon the remote control.

    F Select the desired unction (or example., >).

    CAUTION! Remove batteries i they are

    exhausted or i the remote control

    will not be used or a long time.

    Do not mix batteries (old andnew or carbon and alkaline, etc).

    Batteries contain chemical

    substances and should be disposedo properly.

    Connecting the aerial cables

    These connections enable you to watchand record TV programmes using this

    recorder. I the aerial signal isconnected via a VCR, Cable Box orSatellite Receiver, ensure that thesedevices are turned on in order to watchor record the cable programmes.

    I you want to connect to a VCRand/or Cable Box/Satellite Receiver,see the chapter Step 2 : OptionalConnections or the possibleconnections to your TV.

    A Connect the existing Aerial/Cable TVsignal (or rom the Cable Box/SatelliteReceiver {RF OUT or TO TV}) to theANTENNA socket on the recorder.

    B Use the supplied RF coaxial cable toconnect the TV socket on therecorder to the aerial input socket (orlabelled as VHF/UHF RF IN) on your TV.

    Connecting the video cable

    This connection enables you to view thedisc playback rom the recorder. You

    only need to choose one o the optionsbelow to make your video connection.

    Option 1: Using a SCART cable

    Use the SCART cable to connect theEXT1 TO TV-I/O scart socket on therecorder to the corresponding SCARTinput socket on the TV.

    Helpul Hints:

    I your TV set displays a selection or theSCART socket, select VCR as the source orthe SCART socket. The EXT2 AUX-I/O scart socket isintended only or additional devices.

    Option 2: Using an S-Video cable

    Use an S-video cable (not supplied) toconnect the S-VIDEO (Y/C) socket onthe recorder to the S-Video input socket

    (or labelled as Y/C or S-VHS) on the TV. Audio connection is required in orderto hear the sound, see next sectionConnecting the audio cables.

    This connection enables you to listen tothe sound. However, this connection is

    not required i this recorder is connectedto the TV using the supplied SCARTcable.

    Connecting a camcorder

    You can use the ront sockets to copycamcorder recordings. These sockets arelocated behind the ap on the right handside and provides convenient connectionsor a camcorder.

    Option 1: Using the DV IN socketUse this connection i you have a DigitalVideo or Digital 8 camcorder. The DVsocket conorms to the i.LINK standard.It provides the best picture quality.

    Use an i.LINK 4-pin cable (not supplied)to connect the DV IN socket on therecorder to the appropriate DV OUTsocket on the camcorder.

    Beore you start operating, press DV onthe remote to select DV as the inputchannel. See the chapter Recording ordetails.

    Helpul Hints: The DV IN socket does not support aconnection to a Personal Computer. It is not possible to record rom therecorder to your camcorder via the DV INsocket on your recorder.

    Use the S-VIDEO connection i you havea Hi8 or S-VHS(C) camcorder. Itprovides good picture quality.

    Beore you start...When you complete theconnections and switch on the

    recorder or the frst time, it isadvisable that you make severalbasic settings.

    Please see the ollowing pages on usingthe Setup Menu eatures to programmeTV channels, menu language and systemclock settings. This will improve theperormance o this recorderconsiderably.

    Finding the viewing channel

    A Press STANDBY-ON on the recorderto switch it on.

    B Switch on the TV and set it to thecorrect video-in channel. You should seethe blue DVD background screen. Usually this channel is between thelowest and highest channels and may be

    called FRONT, A/V IN, VIDEO. See yourTVs manual or more details. Or, you may go to channel 1 on yourTV, then press the channel down keyrepeatedly until you see the Video Inchannel. Alternatively, the TV remote controlmay have a key or switch that choosesdierent video modes.

    Setting the OSD language

    Select the menu language or thisrecorders on-screen display. Thelanguage options are dierent dependingon your country or region. It may notcorrespond to the illustrations shown inthe user manual.

    Language settings can only bechanged when the recorder is notplaying or recording.

    You may be interrupted whilst watchingyour avourite TV programme. You canpause the show by pressing PAUSEand pressing PLAYto resumeplayback o the programme at the sceneit was interrupted. You can pause thelive TV broadcast up to a maximumperiod o 6 hours. It behaves exactly as iyou were in control o the live broadcast.

    Whilst watching a live TV programme,you can presson the remote controlto jump back 10 seconds upon everysingle press or instant replay.

    Copying rom HDD to arecordable DVD

    You can copy a recorded title(s) rom theHDD (hard disk drive) to a recordable

    DVD.

    The time taken to copy content rom theHDD to a recordable DVD depends onthe record quality o the HDDrecordings.

    It is not possible to change the mode orecord quality during the copyingprocess. As such, it is important that youchoose the appropriate record qualitywhen you frst set up the recording tothe HDD.

    The copying process is done at a higherspeed than the recording. The ollowinginormation will be stored on the disc : Title/name o recording Date o recording Time o recording Record quality mode/ length o

    recording Index picture o title

    Discs or recording

    There are several ormats o recordableDVD discs which can be used with thisrecorder:

    DVDRW (DVD ReWritable discs) Discs that are rewritable can be usedor multiple recordings once the existingdata has been erased.

    DVDR (DVD Recordable discs) Discs that can only be used or a singlerecording. Each new recording is alwaysadded at the end o all previousrecordings as existing recordings cannotbe overwritten.

    Editing can be made on DVDR discsas long as they have not been fnalised.

    To play a DVDR disc on anotherDVD player, it must be fnalised (see thesection Playing your recordings(DVDR) on other DVD players) Aterthis is done, no more content can beadded to the disc.

    About timer recording

    Use Timer Recording to automaticallystart and stop a recording at a laterdate/ time. The recorder will tune to theright programme channel and beginrecording at the specifed time.

    With this recorder, you can pre-programme up to 8 recordings.

    To make a timer recording, your

    recorder needs to know:

    The date you want to make therecording. The recording input source. The start and stop time o the

    recording. The mode o record quality, see

    the chapter Beore Recording GENERAL settings.

    About VPS/PDCVPS (Video Programming System) orPDC (Programme Delivery Control)controls the start and duration o TVchannel recordings. I a TV programme

    starts earlier or ends later than wasscheduled, the recorder will start/end therecording accordingly.

    The VPS/PDC recording option can onlybe used to record an entire programmerom its beginning to the end. To set atimer that is dierent rom the VPS/PDCbroadcast time, you must disable theVPS/PDC recording option.Note: Programme Delivery Control(PDC) is not available to users in the UK.

    Timer recording (VIDEOPlus+ System)

    This is a simple timer programmingsystem. To use, enter the PlusCodeprogramming number associated withyour television programme. You can fndthis number in your TV listings magazine.

    Beore playing a disc, make sure the

    disc is or the same region as your

    player.

    Do not push on the disc tray or

    put any objects other than discs on

    the disc tray. It may cause the discplayer to malunction.

    Starting disc playback

    A Press STANDBY-ON2 to switch onthe recorder.

    B Press OPEN/CLOSE on the ront othe recorder. The disc tray opens.

    C Place the disc onto the tray with the labelacing up, then press OPEN/CLOSE.

    D Switch on the TV. Select the correctVideo In channel at the TV (See thechapter Step 3: Installation and Setup Finding the viewing channel).

    E Press DVD to access the disc contentmenu.

    Playback starts automatically or pressPLAYX.

    I the disc has its own menu, this will beloaded. Otherwise, the recorder willlaunch an index screen.

    Playing a DVD video disc

    The DVD disc is usually ormatted with a

    disc menu. You may have to make yourselection (e.g., subtitle or audio language)within the disc menu.

    A Insert a DVD disc. Press DVD on theremote control.

    I the disc menu appears on the TV

    Use the numeric keypad 0-9 to inputyour selection or use WXST keys toselect a play option and press OKtostart playback.

    To select a specifc chapter/titlemarker

    During playback, press T/C on theremote control repeatedly to togglebewteen { Title }, { Chapter} or{ Time }. Use the numeric keypad 0-9to input your selection o title/chapternumber or specifc time during playback.

    B To stop playback, press STOP .

    Playing a (Super) Video CD

    (Super) Video CDs may eature PBC

    (Play Back Control). This allows you toplay the video CDs interactively,ollowing the menu on the display.

    A Insert a (Super) Video CD. Press DVDon the remote control.

    I the PBC is on, the disc indexmenu will appear on the TV

    B Use numeric keypad 0-9 to input yourselection or to select a play option.

    Press RETURN on the remote controlto return to the previous menu.

    To turn on/o the Playback Controlmode, press INFO key on the remotecontrol twice during playback to accessthe playback menu options. UseST keys to select { PBC } andpressX to select either { PBC On } or{ PBC O}.

    C To stop playback, press STOP .

    Playing an audio CD

    A Insert an audio CD. Press DVD on theremote control. Playback starts automatically or pressPLAYX to start play.

    B To stop playback, press STOP .
