GlossaryAnalog audio
An electrical signal that directly rep-resents sound. In contrast, digital
audio which can be an electrical sig-nal, but is an indirect representationof sound. See also Digital audio.
Aspect ratio
The width of a TV screen relative toits height. Conventional TVs are 4:3(in other words, the screen is almostsquare); widescreen models are 16:9(the screen is almost twice as wide asit is high).
Chapter
Just as a book is split up into severalchapters, a title on a DVD disc is usu-ally divided into chapters. See alsoTitle.
Component video output
This is a video signal format thatconveys each of three principalcolors of light (red, blue and green)through different signal lines. Thisallows the viewers to experience pic-ture colors as original as it is. Thereare several signal formats, includingY/PB/PR and Y/CB/CR.
Digital audio
An indirect representation of soundby numbers. During recording, thesound is measured at discrete inter-vals (44, 100 times a second forCD audio) by an analog-to-digitalconverter, generating a stream ofnumbers. On playback, a digital-to-
analog converter generates an ana-log signal based on these numbers.See also Sampling frequency andAnalog audio.
Dolby Digital
The system developed by DolbyLaboratories to compress digi-
tal sound. It offers you sound ofstereo(2ch) or multi-channel audio(up to 5.1ch).

Progressive Scan (525p/480p)
A type of display that does notsplit each frame into fields, andinstead scans directly through all thescanlines of each frame in order.
Progressive Scan provides less flick-ering and higher image resolutionthan traditional (525i/480i) TV sig-nals. Refer to page 71 for instructionson selective Progressive Scan mode.
Regions code
Regions associate discs and playerswith particular areas of the world.
This unit will only play back discsthat have compatible region codes. You can find the region code of yourunit by looking at the rear panel. Some discs are compatible withmore than one region (or all regions).
Sampling frequency
The rate which sound is measuredby a specified interval to turn it intodigital audio data. The numbers ofsampling in one second defines assampling frequency. The higher therate, the better the sound quality is.
SAP (Secondary Audio Program)
Sub audio channel which is deliveredseparately from main-audio channel.
This audio channel is used as analternate in bilingual broadcasting.
S-Video output
It delivers independently each signalof color(C) and luminance(Y) to TVas video signals, so that higher-qual-ity picture will be materialized.
Title (DVD only)
A collection of chapters on DVD disc.See also chapter.
