Bayview Entertainment has locked into Aug. 10 as the DVD street date for writer/director Andrew Ja-ra’s thriller, Borderland.

MVD's Superstars Doc Arrives On Aug. 10

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced this past week that the 35th Anniversary of writer/director Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, will be celebrated on Aug. 17 with the debut of a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition.

Bonus goodies include newly unearth screen tests for the role of Sarah, which included Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club were under her belt that this time … she ended up doing Pretty in Pink), Trini Alvarado (who had done well in Rich Kids and Mrs. Soffel), Tracey Gold, Claudia Wells (as Jennifer in Back to the Future), Jill Schoelen, Maddie Corman and Danielle von Zerneck among those who tested for the part. There are also roughly 25 minutes-worth of deleted scenes with commen-tary from Brian Henson.

There are also vintage materials included with this mid-August home entertainment celebration These include commentary by conceptual designer Brian Froud, a Labyrinth anniversary Q&A session, a pair of featurettes — “The Henson Legacy” and “Remembering the Goblin King” — and a trio of documentaries — documentary filmmaker Des Saunders’ Inside the Labyrinth, plus the 2011 documentaries titled Journey Through the Labyrinth: Kingdom of Characters and Journey Through the Labyrinth: The Quest for Goblin City.

MVD Entertainment Group has two mu-sic-themed documentaries lined up for release during the month of August as both DVD and Blu-ray prod-uct offerings.

We begin the festivities with the Aug. 10 debut of documentary filmmaker Frank Munoz’s 2021 up-dated presentation of Superstars: The Documentary - Extended Version.

Superstars was originally broadcast in 2015 following the New York City reunion of the cast —along with director Norman Jewison — which was organized by Ted Neeley in April of 2015. Munoz has extended the original 51-minute documentary out to a full 90-minutes with additional footage and interviews for the reunion … it is now a more complete document.

In the beginning, Jesus Christ Superstar was nothing more than an LP from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It was released in the U.K. in 1970 as a “concept album,” but was not all that successful, however it

soon arrived on domestic shores and took off. It was quickly adapted as a Broadway musical and opened in the fall of 1971.

It was here that the first con-nection was made, with Broadway’s Pontius Pilat (Barry Dennen), who had a small part in Jewison’s 1971 film release of Fiddler on the Roof,

giving Jewison a copy of the cast album. History records that Jewison was hooked and immediately reached out

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provid-ed by MVD Entertainment Group, has picked Aug. 31 for a new Blu-ray edi-tion of director Bernard McEveety’s horror tale, The Brotherhood of Satan.

Ve t e r a n character actor L.Q. Jones took a chance on pro-ducing films in the 1970s and delivered two indie gems, A Boy and His Dog (which he

also directed and wrote) and The Brotherhood of Satan, which gave him the opportunity to have fun with friend and fellow character actor Strother Martin.

The pair had just come from Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch and were more or less falling into being type-cast as cowboys, which, was a good living — separately they appeared during this period in such films as The Ballad of Cable Hogue, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, True Grit, The Hunting Party, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, etc. … you can see the pattern.

With The Brotherhood of Satan, Strother Martin gets to chew the scenery as Doc, the devil-worship-ping leader of a murderous coven of witches and L.Q. Jones, when not directing, gets to be the good-sheriff out to solve the mystery of why doz-

nominee, Nashville, which is getting a new 4K film restoration and will be joining the studio’s popular

“Paramount Presents” line of Blu-ray products on Aug. 10.

What an undertaking, 24 major characters crossing paths during a week in “Music City,” which, of course is Nashville, Tennessee. Altman teamed up once again with screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury, who had worked with him on Thieves Like Us, and she came up with a script that pleased him. He added to it with even more characters (she started with 17 or 18, depending on how you count them) and then took it to United Artists, where he had done his last two pictures, Thieves Like Us and The Long Goodbye.

They didn’t understand it, too complicated. Pass. More studios passed on it. Too many moving parts; too many characters; too many storylines to keep track of. You name an excuse, studios executives found it.

Enter Jerry Weintraub, a pro-ducer of television music “events” at the time, mainly with John Denver (twice nominated for Emmy Awards, winning for the broadcast of An Evening with John Denver), who arranged financing. Paramount would handle the dis-tribution.

With Altman’s vast episodic television background (long before he became a legendary film director, he cut his teeth on episodic television series during the 1950s and 60s), coupled with his cadre of regular actors, he was able to fill out the cast list, which included Keith Carradine from Thieves Like Us, Shelley Duvall, who had her film debut in Altman’s Brew-ster McCloud and followed it up with the role of Ida Coyle in McCabe & Mrs. Miller and then teamed with Carradine in Thieves Like Us (Nashville would be her fourth feature film, all under the direction of Robert Altman) and Jeff Goldblum, who had just finished Altman’s California Split.

He also recruited Laugh-In regulars Henry Gibson (who also worked with Altman on The Long Goodbye) and Lily Tomlin (her film debut … which earned her only Oscar nomination, Best Supporting Actress), the incredible Karen Black (who apparently sent her songs to Altman … he said come on and sing, she did), plus Geraldine Chaplin (who, it is rumored, was willing to work for nothing just to be in Altman’s film), Scott Glenn, Barbara Harris, Ronee Blakley (who was also nominated for Best Support-ing Actress, which put her head-to-head with Lily


Nashville ContinuedTomlin) … and on and on.

Actors in the movie wrote their own songs, improvised dialog and Altman used sound and camera tricks that brought together his complicated story … and somehow it all works. For his efforts, he was nominated for Best Director!

As to bonus features, there is a vintage commentary option featuring Robert Altman and the newly prepared featurette titled “24 Tracks: Robert Altman’s Nashville.”

Also joining the “Paramount Presents” line of Blu-ray releases on Aug. 10 is director George Stevens’ 1951 film adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s 1925 true-crime novel “An American Tragedy,” which was re-titled for its theatrical release as A Place in Sun.

For his efforts, George Stevens would win the Oscar for Best Director and the film would be nominated for Best Picture as well, but this almost didn’t happen. It seems that the studio had previously adapted the novel way back in 1931 with Josef Von Sternberg directing and Phillips Holmes, Sylvia Sidney and Frances Dee in the key roles. That was 1931, it bombed at the box office, the author who alive at the time disowned it and the studio had a long memory … eventually Stevens prevailed, especially with a cast featuring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters.

This turned out to be a labor of love for George Stevens as he spent nearly a full year in post-production working on the film. The results were

near perfection, but the great irony was that the film ended competing head-to-head with A Streetcar Named Desire … and with An American in Paris also in the running for Best Picture, the vote-splitting between the two heavyweight dramas likely cost A Place in the Sun the Best Picture honors.

The same could be said for Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando, who faced off in the Best Actor category and that gave Humphrey Bogart the edge he needed to win for The African Queen. A very tough year indeed.

As to bonus goodies, we have a vintage commentary track with George Stevens, Jr. and Ivan Moffat (Oscar nominated for his script for George Stevens’ Giant), archival cast and crew interviews, the featurette titled “George Stevens: Filmmakers Who Knew Him” and the newly prepared featurette titled “Filmmaker Focus: Leonard Maltin on A Place in the Sun.”

And, as mentioned, Paramount Home Entertainment will releasing 14 Miramax films on Blu-ray this coming July 27 … these are: 40 Days and 40 Nights, Albino Alligator, Chocolat, Cider House Rules, City of God, Cold Mountain, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Equilibrium, Grifters, Madonna: Truth or Dare, Marvin’s Room, Mimic: Director’s Cut, Reindeer Games: The Director’s Cut and Strictly Ballroom.

What’s clever about The Brotherhood of Satan is that simple children’s toys suddenly take on deadly powers (caused by Doc and his disciples). This element allows the mystery of what is going on to build and build, which gives the film some nice twists and takes it out of the run-of-the-mill devil-cult sort of horror film.

Into this “cauldron of death” come Ben (Charles Bateman), his daughter, K.T. (Geri Reischl in her film debut — I Dismember Mama, The Meat Puppet) and Ben’s girlfriend, Nicky (Anna Capri — Piranha, Enter

the Dragon), who don’t seem to be able to leave … with good reason!!

Bonus goodies include a newly-prepared commentary featuring Kim Newman and Sean Hogan, the new featurette titled “Satanic Panic: How the 1970s Conjured the Brotherhood of Satan” and a video session with actors Jonathan Erickson Eisley and Alyson Moore (as children in the film).

If La La Land and L.A. Confidential were love-letters to Los Angeles, then Jara’s Borderland serves as the same for the border city of El Paso, Texas. The city itself becomes one of the characters as we follow Sara up this street and down that alley.

To “buy” her freedom, Sara agrees to act as something of a mule. Since she is a local, she will pass unnoticed as she moves drug cartel un-derlings around the city. One of these passengers, “The Stranger” (Joe Sinclitico — The Empty Space) is a gun for hire, who is chauffeured around by Sara to take care of business. Just do the job, don’t get involved … that’s all she is thinking, but soon she finds herself helping her “ride” recover missing loot on behave of their employer, David.

This night, this ride … it will be a blood bath as Sara and “The Stranger” move through El Paso with one thought in mind, find the money. It soon begins to dawn on Sara that her dead husband might be “missing” clue to it all, and that can’t be good for her!!

to Universal Pictures, which had acquired film rights, to work out a deal … with Fiddler on the Roof a huge theatrical success, such a deal was quickly struck.

The Hollywood trades during the period reported that something like 3,000 individuals were auditioned for the film, out of this multitude a select group was formed, including a number of the key roles culled from members of the Broadway stage play … and of course, Barry Dennen was among these, as well as Yvonne Elliman (her only film role … well, she did have a small cameo in director Michael Schultz’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band).

Jewison had the entire film worked out in his head, which was based not on the Broadway play, but of him listening to the music of An-drew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice over and over again. The result was an almost surreal presentation, but it worked perfectly … and, as they say, the rest is history.

Superstars: The Documentary - Extended Version includes material from the 2015 cast reunion, additional interviews, a Q&A session and as a special bonus a trio of Ted Neeley music videos.
