3. Introduction to the module Production/ Operations management is the set of activities that creates value in the form of goods and services by transforming inputs into outputs. Over 50% of all jobs are related to this field and includes areas such as customer service, quality assurance, production planning & control, scheduling, job/process design, inventory/ stores management, workstudy, ergonomics, supervision of the work force and manufacturing related activities. On the completion of this qualification, you would be competent in applying operations management strategies, tools, systems and techniques to a wide range of manufacturing and service organisations

b) Assessment

a. 2 major tests of 100 marks each.

- 1 project – 100 marks

b. a final examination - 100 marks.

A student registered for this course must attain a course mark of 40% in order to qualify to write the final examination. Students who achieve between 45% and 49% in their final examination mark qualify to write the supplementary examination. Those students will be notified of the dates of the supplementary examinations by the examination department. Please refer to your 2018 Rule Book for Students in order to familiarise yourself with all the relevant rules.

6. Copyright and plagiarism The DUT, Faculty and Department emphasizes the need for academic integrity in all student learning and assessment activities. Various formal and informal workshops and training sessions are conducted during the duration of the programme to inform and train students on the plagiarism policies, procedures and guidelines as well as the relevant tools and techniques for referencing the materials and sources used in the completion of assessment tasks. In particular the DUT plagiarism declaration must be completed and submitted with assignments, portfolios and other formative assessments. See Annexure 1. Please be aware that any forms of cheating in your tests and examinations will result in disciplinary action against you. Literature used for assignments or projects that has not been referenced can lead to a charge of plagiarism.

7. Student support Academic support is provided via tutorials and one on one student consultation sessions. In addition at risk students and modules with low pass rates are identified at a departmental/module levels. Basic study skills, note taking, and time management concepts are introduced by module lecturers. Thereafter students are referred to Student Counselling, Student Health services, Library orientation & support and Financial Aid. Finally students also have access to residence study programmes and other courses offered by Student Governance. An informal system of monitoring and tracking is implemented at the module level.

8. Work Integrated Learning (WIL), industry, community, and occupation-related information. Work preparedness concepts, real world based case study, simulations, project work is integrated in the programme at all levels. .

Quality is assured through Informal feedback, internal and external moderation, Lecturer Evaluation Questionnaires (LEQ’s), Subject Evaluation Questionnaires (SEQ’s), Program Review Evaluation and Annual Quality Monitoring. LEQs and SEQs are carried out halfway through the course so that any problems can be addressed in time to benefit the students.

Assessment tasks/methods/standards, module content, teaching approaches, tutorial support and consultation are continuously reviewed and revised when necessary to incorporate feedback from the above quality assurance interventions and student feedback.

10. Registration Please note that you must be registered for this module to be eligible to attend the classes. Attendance registers will be completed after every lecture. Your test marks will not be given to you if you are not registered.

12. Evaluation questionnaires During the course of the year, you will be required to complete a

questionnaire that is designed to evaluate the lecturer. Your honesty and assistance in answering this questionnaire can help in identifying areas for improvement.

13. Attendance at Lectures

Lectures are an essential part of this course. Attendance at lectures is

compulsory since they cover the essential contents of each section and give guidance with regard to further readings. Furthermore, announcements e.g. test dates, job interviews, guest speakers, etc are made in class from time to time.

14. Past examination papers

The previous three years final examination papers has been included in

this student guideline. You are required to work through these papers as it would assist in your preparation of tests and examinations.

It is extremely important for you to attend lectures regularly and to be on time.

All assignments, projects must be submitted on the due date or earlier.

Students who miss a test or examination because of serious illness must submit a doctor’s certificate within three working days.

Notices for supplementary examinations will be posted on the Faculty notice Board. It is your responsibility to timeously check such notices.
