Term 3 Week 5 Friday 24th August 2018
Principal’s Report
Halfway through the term! Say that out loud- it’s crazy! Our
school continues to thrive and our students continue to impress
us with the quality of their work, their attitudes and their
enthusiasm.
Morning Coffee
Thanks to all those who were able to join us this morning for
coffee. The van from Mockingbird Café brewed us a beautiful
cuppa, and the muffins were really yummy! This was just a thank
you to all our staff and parents who have been working hard,
contributing to our school and helping out in any way shape or
form that they always do. We know how lucky we are here to
have such great staff and parents, but we don’t take this for
granted. Thanks to Kathy and the P&C for supporting this
activity. If anyone gets a chance to thank the staff at Mockingbird
directly, that would also be much appreciated.
Cycle team presentation
On Monday’s assembly, Greg Blacklock presented $1153.00 to
the school on behalf of the team of cyclists who rode in a
fundraiser last Sunday. We really appreciated this effort and will
use the funds to directly benefit the students.
Science Fair
How wonderful it was to be able to mix with the kids and
communities from the other S8 small schools last Friday at
Tumbulgum PS. Our students were able to demonstrate their
learning in a really creative way and enjoyed the chance to
socialise. Thanks again to all of the parents who were able to
transport and join us for the day.
North Coast Primary Schools Public Speaking
Mrs Jones has been very busily coordinating this event for our
school. We have now got 9 finalists from our school presenting
at Monday’s special assembly from 2pm. From this group, 1
student from Years K-2, one from 3/4 and one from 5/6 will
advance to represent us at the North Coast Finals in September.
Please feel free to join us on Monday for these speeches. This
event will replace the normal school assembly on Monday
afternoon. Thanks to Mrs Jones for coordinating this for us.
Music Room update
The major refurbishments are finished! We are now just waiting
for carpets, paint and the finishing touches. We hope to be able
to use this in the next fortnight and move our music lessons into
the new space. If you’d like a chance to see the new room,
simply ask when you are at school next. Very exciting!

Future Earth Day
Last Thursday, years 3-6 enjoyed the opportunity to work with
Cindy from the Dorroughby Environmental Education Centre
here at school. They learned about waste management, water
and energy use and the best way to preserve our living environ-
ments. They also participated in a Tweed Shire Council building
design competition using recycled goods to build a model.
Pictures from this were used in the recent advertisements for
the Council program and will be seen across the Shire.
The Todd Woodbridge Cup
Last Tuesday, 8 of our years 3 and 4 students travelled to
Tweed Tennis Courts to take part in the Todd Woodbridge
Cup. This competition also serves as a gala-fun day, intro-
ducing players to tennis. We played as a team, in games
against Tweed Heads PS, Bilambil PS and
Terranora PS. We played really well, particularly for a team
who had several players who had never actually hit a ball
with a racquet. We were good enough to win our pool
games and then advance to the finals, where we were nar-
rowly beaten by Bilambil PS. We were good enough, howev-
er to qualify for the regional finals to be held in Lismore on
the 4th September. The team is in training, getting lots of
practice at school and in some cases outside of school.
Needless to say, the team showed excellent sportsmanship
and had fun all day, making us all very proud of them. Thank
you to those parents who were able to help with transport
and encouragement throughout the day.
Thank you to all students and parents for sup-
porting our, Dress as a Farmer day. All mon-ey raised will be forwarded to our drought stricken farmers.
