DuPont PV5400 Series Photovoltaic Encapsulant Sheets Based on DuPont SentryGlas ® Ionomer DuPont™ PV5400 Series encapsulant is an ionomer- based technology that brings interesting new performance properties to manufacturers of glass/glass PV modules, including: Exceptionally low moisture ingress High electrical resistivity High melt flow (for processing speed) Increased module strength No acetic acid, no plasticizer No refrigeration, no interleaving Minimize Moisture Ingress A key requirement for long-lasting PV modules is to prevent moisture ingress. To minimize moisture ingress, the inherent performance characteristics required in the encapsulant include: low moisture pickup low diffusion coefficients low moisture equilibrium levels DuPont™ PV5400 ionomer encapsulants show outstanding performance in all three areas, resulting in overall low moisture ingress behavior. DuPont ionomer-based photovoltaic encapsulant sheeting offers excellent strength, weathering and dielectric properties in a high-productivity roll stock DuPont™ PV5400 Series encapsulant provides customizable solutions for innovative module designs. Increase Resistivity Another key feature for an encapsulant is its isolation performance or electrical resistivity. Surface and volume resistivity of DuPont™ PV5400 ionomer up to two orders of magnitude higher than EVA and three to four times higher than PVB’s resistivity (measured according to ASTM D257 at 23°C and 25% RH). Increase System Rigidity, Durability DuPont ionomer encapsulants are up to 100 times stiffer and five times stronger than typical PVB encapsulants. e stiffer encapsulant significantly increases the mechanical load-sharing between the two layers of glass, resulting in a more durable structure. is also means that glass/glass PV modules can be designed to experience less than half the rate of deflection when compared to same modules with PVB, under the same load. Reduce Lamination Cycle Time A very important part of the total cost of PV modules is the lamination process. Lamination tests with commercial a-Si and CdTe modules on non-autoclave equipment show that using the new DuPont™ PV5400 ionomer can significantly reduce cycle time versus using PVB or EVA. Table 1 provides a summary of key physical test data for DuPont™ PV5400 Series sheets.
