Experience DUNN
UPPER SCHOOL
Dunn is the place that makes it all possible.
Our graduates are adaptive learners,
bold leaders, clear thinkers and creative
doers. At Dunn, you will gain more than the
foundation for your own success. You will
carry with you the confidence and vision
to improve your world.
Dunn’s faculty, students and parents create a community that values integrity, respects other points of view, prizes intellectual growth, and celebrates the pursuit of individual passions.
MIKE BECK, HEAD OF SCHOOL
STRETCH yourself.
On top of academic achievements that include
ten Advanced Placement and Honors classes,
ANDIE DE WERD ‘14, also piloted airplanes
and captained Dunn’s volleyball squad to
CIF playoffs while leading her club volleyball
team in Santa Barbara. She now attends
Northeastern University.

TO COLLEGE
You will be inspired in the
classroom, and challenged by
teachers who truly know you.
Every Dunn student pursues a
path of intellectual exploration
and growth—in English,
science, mathematics, history,
world language, the fine arts,
music, and an array of college-
prep elective courses.
You will actively participate
in small classes, averaging
just 12 students per section.
Dunn faculty lead interactive,
discussion-based lessons.
In the humanities, these are
college-style seminar courses
where students learn to form
and express opinions, debate
issues, and respectfully listen
to different points of view.
In mathematics and the
sciences, you will experience
equal levels of interactivity.
Small classes allow every
student to conduct the
experiment in labs, not just
stand by. In math courses,
students can expect to grow
comfortable demonstrating
complex solutions for their
class, while working in small
groups to solve problems.
Ask any Dunn student and
they’ll tell you, “My teachers
pushed me, but they also were
incredibly accessible and
ready to give me extra help,
any time I needed it.”

The arts beckon at Dunn.
Under the direction of
expert teachers—each an
accomplished professional
artist—our students win local
and national competitions
in photography, painting,
drawing, ceramics and music.
You may already have a
passion for the arts, or you
may discover it in Dunn’s
breathtaking art studios.
As sunlight streams through
massive windows, you can
throw a pot with classmates,
sketch your own profile, edit
a digital film with your project
team, or experiment with
acrylics.
The equipment is professional-
grade, and the possibilities are
endless. Whether you sample
across the artistic spectrum
or pursue the path to AP Art,
you will build intellectual,
perceptual, creative and
technical skills that last a
lifetime.
My favorite class is Studio Art 2 because I get to do what I love and my teacher is a role model. She’s very honest, which makes me work harder at my artistic abilities.

We live and learn by embracing a set of shared CORE VALUES:
Emotional Wellness

Moral Courage
Dunn’s competitive athletic
program serves serious
athletes and beginners, and
the California sunshine means
you can play outside all year
round. Experienced coaches
build character and promote
sportsmanship and teamwork
in every aspect of the game.
Each year, a handful of Dunn
seniors advance to play varsity
sports in college. And every
student learns lifelong habits
of exercise and cooperation.
Your teammates will become
your best friends as you set
goals and get better together.
Dunn’s 55-acre campus offers
ample space for teams to train
with six tennis courts, three
soccer and lacrosse fields, a
baseball diamond, indoor gym
for basketball and volleyball,
plus an outdoor heated lap
pool, cardio and weight rooms,
cross country paths, and
mountain bike courses.

ABU DANLADI ’14 came out of Ghana’s Right to Dream soccer academy and created instant magic at Dunn. A two-year captain and leading scorer, he was unstoppable even against the best international players in the world. In 2014 he was named Gatorade National Soccer Player of the Year. Abu says of Dunn, “These were the best three years of my life.” He heads to UCLA on a soccer scholarship.

You'll learn as much out of
the classroom as you will in it.
Our community feels like a big
family—at Dunn, you can do it
all. Our athletes are also artists
and musicians. You can act in
a play, try surfing or robotics,
run for student government
or start a club.
The school days are filled with
action. Beyond classes and
studying, there is so much to
do. Students run the morning
assembly each Monday and
Friday. Everyone eats lunch
together outside (or in the
dining hall on rare rainy
days). You'll check in with
your advisor, ask a teacher
to review your essay draft,
or plan a fundraiser with
your club, all in a day's work.
Inspiring guest speakers give
talks on campus. Community
service activities offer
something for everybody,
and holiday celebrations
and special traditions bring
everyone together.

This is the heart of your
Dunn experience—making
a real contribution in your
community. As faculty, staff
and students we use our
individual talents to infuse this
collective mission. It starts with
Day of Caring, a school-wide
volunteering tradition. And it
branches out in any direction
that inspires you, from our
backyard in Los Olivos to the
far reaches of the globe.
Whether you want to design
Valentine’s themed floral
arrangements for senior
citizens living in Atterdag
Village, join a walk-a-thon
team for Autism Speaks, help
build houses in Guatemala,
or tutor young children at the
YMCA, it’s never been more
fun or easy to join your friends
and get involved in your world.
