DCHS Dog Walking (by Jenny Wander)

One of my passions is walking dogs at DCHS. I started walking dogs as a volunteer back in July of 2011. I love animals especially dogs. I grew up with them and would love to be able to give one of the DCHS residents a forever home. Unfortunately, our work schedule won’t allow us to have one at this time. Walking dogs at DCHS gives me my “dog fix” while providing a much needed service.

I will admit I was very nervous to start volunteering at the shelter. Like so many people, I was fearful it would be too emotional for me. I thought that I would leave balling my eyes out every time be-cause I couldn’t “take them all with me”. I found the very opposite was true. I am always so pleased and content to know how great all of these animals are cared for by the awesome staff. I also can’t believe how rewarding it is to socialize these animals and get them the exercise they need. You can see it in their eyes (and often by their kisses too) that they appreciate getting away from the shelter for a bit and taking a long walk or playing ball in one of the fenced in areas. Often, if I am tearful, they are tears of joy because when I showed up to walk one of my furry friends they were adopted in to their forever home. DCHS is fortunate to have a beautiful path through the woods to walk the dogs and some fenced in areas to let the dogs run loose (courtesy of a grant from the Dunn Energy Cooperative - ed.) and play with toys. Both of these options are great exercise for the dogs and for humans too.

If you enjoy cats, please consider volunteering to socialize them. Unfortunately, the cats are always in abundance at the shelter. They love the attention and getting to spend some time out of their cages. If time doesn’t allow you to volunteer at this time perhaps you are able to make a donation to our building fund. Our cats need more room to stretch out and exercise too. We are currently trying to raise money to remodel and add to our cat side so the cats are not so cramped and have a community room to move around freely. Thanks for your contin-ued support of DCHS. The Board, Staff, and animals appreciate you!!!

Our plan for reuniting lost pets with their owners

Over this last year, we’ve seen hundreds of lost and often homeless pets come through our doors. Some-times they are picked up by law enforcement, other times they are brought in by kind, caring individuals who are concerned for their welfare. However they get here, our ultimate goal is to get them home. This could be to a new home if no owner is found, but ideally, we want them to be reunited with their families.

In 2014, we’ve worked very hard to create situations where identifying a stray animal’s owner is easy. This started with a partner-ship with the City of Menomonie to sell dog and cat licenses to city residents. The licenses are required by ordinance and help identify pets who get away from home. Since our partnership began in April, we’ve been able to license 113 pets (49 cats and 64 dogs). We’ve offered this to other townships in the county and hope to form more partnerships in 2015.

Soon after we started selling licenses, we were fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Community Foundation of Dunn County to offer low-cost microchipping clinics to the public. On October 18th , we held our first clinic at Keyes Chevytown, offering microchips to cats and dogs for only $10. That day, 82 pets were microchipped (23 cats and 54 dogs). We plan on holding clinics each spring and fall going forward.

Finally, a couple of months ago, the Bissell Pet Foundation awarded us a grant to purchase a pet tag engraving machine. The machine arrived in December and is now programmed and ready to engrave tags. For only $7 (including tax), pet owners can get personalized tags for their pets, ensuring up-to-date con-tact information should their pet ever get lost.

The engraver was the final piece of a three-part plan to increase the number of lost pets that get reunited with their owners: license, microchip, and pet tags. Each of these identification methods offers different benefits with the same outcome, getting lost pets identified and returned to their owners.

If you haven’t already and are in need, please take advantage of these pro-grams and share them with others who may need them. Together (and with a lot of help from great organizations), we can reunite more pets with their families for many years to come.

We would like to shine the spotlight on our beloved employee Beth Bilderback. Beth started as an ani-mal caregiver back in April 2005 and has been a compassionate, hard-working, dedicated part of our staff ever since! Ten years may not seem like a long time for some, but ten years working at a humane society is a huge accomplishment! Beth works full time at a local vet clinic, and works most weekends at the shelter. Over the years she has donated untold amounts of time, mon-ey and pieces of her heart to the animals in our care. We are so lucky to have such a kind-hearted, self-less, extraordinary person as Beth as a treasured part of our organiza-tion.

Growing up on a dairy farm meant spending lots of time with animals of all kinds. Cows, pigs, chickens, horses, dogs, and cats were always around as well as our pet crows and pigeons. I’ve always loved animals so joining the Humane Society didn’t take a lot of consideration.

I’ve been a member since about 2005 when I retired from a career in teaching and school counseling; the last 20 years I served as a counselor at Chippewa Valley Technical College on the Eau Claire Campus. My husband and I adopted four cats and a dog from the Dunn County Humane Society. Kitkat, our first cat, started out as our foster cat and quickly became a permanent addition. She was quirky and ornery; her only true love was my husband who returned her affection. Cleo, the calico kitten, had a heart condi-tion and was not expected to have a long life (she is now 11). When Kitkat died, my hus-band picked another tabby, Abby-Tabby who is now 12, and who has all the endearing traits of a typical tabby. Speedy (now age 10) was an accident. She was brought into the shelter as a screaming 12-week old kitten. She yowled—loudly—the entire day she first arrived at the shelter. When it was time for me to leave, I agreed to take her home as a foster kitten to prevent the Human Society staff from going nuts. As soon as Speedy came through the door of our house, she was quiet and happy. She has never left. Buttons, our miniature poodle mix came in as a foster care pup as well; at the time there was no space for small dogs at the shelter so we took her in. She now has a larger fan club than my husband or I ever had.

Humane Society membership is a necessity as far as I am concerned. How we care for our animals says a great deal about our humanity and about the value of creatures who cannot speak for themselves. The Dunn County shelter has always made it their highest goal to save lives and provide homes for pets who bring great joy and companionship to those who adopt them. Membership is a privilege I hope many more people will consider.

~ Judy Schindler, December 2014

servation post of the three kitties.)

Judy recently donated the funds to install sound absorbing panels in our newer dog room. This will help reduce the decibel lev-els of barking dogs, reducing stress on our residents. David Uher was kind enough to

install the panels, free of charge! Thank you Judy and David for your generous contribu-

tions to make this happen!
