Welcome to Week 2, Term 3!
Congratulations to Fletcher Hogden and Georgie Lane who both compet-ed at the State Cross Country Carnival at Eastern Creek last Friday. Fletcher finished 43rd out of the 11 Years Boys PSSA runners and 59th out of 75 overall (including Catholic and Independent Schools); Georgie finished
42nd out of the 17 Years Girls CHSSA runners and 68th overall out of 93. Well done to both stu-dents!
Youth Frontiers Mentor Training - last week we had our first 3 Community Mentors trained for this program. Youth Frontiers is an initiative of the NSW Government that targets secondary stu-dents, with the capacity to benefit from the support of a mentor. The mentors will spend some time each week with the students supporting them to achieve their goals. The program gives mentees an opportunity to build life skills and self-confidence through mentoring support and by undertaking a community/school engagement activity. I would like to acknowledge our volun-teers, particularly for giving up their time to attend the training and for the invaluable support they will give to our nominated students. Thank you to Mr Sandy Cox, Mr Peter Gilmour and Mr Angus Stuart.
Yr 10-11 Subject Selection Meeting—I look forward to seeing all Year 10 students and their par-ents at this important Transition meeting on Thursday @ 5:00pm in the Library. At this meeting I will speak about the NSW Education Standards (NESA) requirements for Stage 6 students. We will also look at credentialing for the Higher School Certificate and Vocational Education Options for students in 2020.
Welcome—to Mr Matthew Guihot, who is completing his final Internship at our school this Term with Mr Cranston in PDHPE. We look forward to working with Mr Guihot this Term and hope that he enjoys his time at our school.
Headspace—On Thursday, Headspace will visit our school to speak to both Year 7/8 students and Yr 11/12. Headspace visit our school annually to help students learn about mental health chal-lenges and ways to maintain a healthy headspace. Headspace centres act as a one-stop-shop for young people who need help with mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drugs or work and study support. This is an information service for students at our school.
Yr 11 Snow Trip— Next Monday our Yr 11 students will be attending the annual Snow Excursion to Mt Selwyn along with Mrs Gallagher and Mrs Hogden. We hope that they have a great week and that there is lots of snow. We look forward to hearing of their adventures upon their return.
Education Week—next Tuesday, 6th August 2019, we will be celebrating Education week for 2019. The theme for 2019 is “Every student, every voice”. We invite all parents and community members to join us for our Open Day from 10:15am and Lunch on the Lawn.
Have a great week.
Donna Lane
Principal
Assistant Principal News Education Week is next week and we will be hosting
the DCS Open Day next Tuesday. I invite all of you to
join us for the festivities including ‘Lunch on the
Lawn’. The day begins with Morning Tea from
10.40am followed by the Education Week Assembly,
open classrooms and a picnic lunch. More information
will follow in this newsletter.
Frogs will be the big talking point this week as DCS will
be hosting the ‘Australian Museum in a Box’. This
great resource provides a wonderful insight into frogs
and some very interesting facts regarding frog speci-
mens, habitats, way of life and their rapid decline in
numbers. A big thank you to Dunedoo-Coolah Land-
care for making this possible.
This Friday, in addition to the weekly tennis lessons
with Coach Nathan, K-6 students will be involved in a
footy skills clinic with the NRL. The sessions will be
held at the Sports Club and will follow on from each
class’ tennis lesson. Again a big thank you to Spuz for
the use of his bus to transport students to and from
these activities.
The Life Education Van (featuring Healthy Harold) will
be coming to DCS in Week 4. Each class will visit the
van for a lesson linked to its PDH curriculum. Notes for
this went home with students today. The visit costs
only $5 due to being heavily subsidised thanks to a
large donation by the late Arthur Upston.
Mr Ben Kline - Acting Assistant Principal
We had such a positive start to Term 3 last week, and
it was great to see students get back into the routine
of school with enthusiasm and positive mindsets.
They are helping to look after the new plants in our
gardens, and the new sand in our sandpit was a big
hit! Our tennis lessons with Nathan have been a high-
light, with the final session taking place this week,
along with an NRL workshop for students K-6. Fletch-
er represented DCS at State—see his report in this
week’s school newsletter. Well done, Fletcher!
If you want to see some of the wonderful things we
have been working on this year, please take ad-
vantage of the open classroom next week as part of
Education Week. We look forward to sharing our love
of learning with you! Keep an eye on the school calen-
dar for this and other key dates coming up.
Have a great week.

KINDER: Kindergarten begin their homework adventure this week. Each child will receive a double sid-
ed sheet of Maths and Literacy activities plus their usual ‘rocket’ words, sight words and home reader. Home-work will be given each Monday and is due back on Friday. Don’t forget: Homework Centre is available to K-6 students every Wednesday afternoon until 4pm. This term in Science Kindergarten are studying the unit, ‘On the Move’, where they will be exploring the push and pull forces which make things move. Their first taste of physics! In Geography, students are learning about the location of Australia in the world, its states and territories, and the significance of local and national land-marks in the unit ‘Where am I?’. Morning Literacy lessons have begun well. Expectations are high this term as students increase their reading and writing skills and build on what they achieved last semester. Kinder has also now been introduced to lined paper for writing and handwriting lessons. Have a great week. Mr. Ben Kline - Classroom Teacher
YEAR 1/2: Welcome to week 2, years 1-2 have another busy week ahead. Students are reminded to
revise their spelling words at home each day ready for their test on Friday. In maths this week we are revising addition and subtraction facts. We will also finish off our class book study of Charlotte”s Web in readiness for all things “Frogs” next week. A very big thankyou to our reading Mums for their help with Home Readers. Have a great week. Mrs. Kerry Dorman - Classroom Teacher
YEAR 3-4-5 S: Students made a positive start to the term, and there were some very prepared
and enthusiastic learners in our classroom last week. We had a number of discussions (called ‘Verbal Ping-Pong’) where students had to consider multiple perspectives on given topics. This week we look further into Exposition (Persuasive) texts, with a focus on advertising tricks and traps. Students have been asked to pay attention to ad-vertisements on tv at home, to help identify the various techniques used to get people’s interest. Homework commences this week—I hope we have as many returns as we did last term! Have a great week eve-ryone. Mrs. Georgia Shephard - Classroom Teacher
YEAR 3-4-5 G: This week will be resuming our spelling activities
which means homework will also commence. Year 5 have a different style this term and I have explained that to them in class this morning. If they need any help just let me know. Homework is due back on Fridays but I am happy if it is handed in on Mondays :) We started looking at exposition texts last week and will continue on with that this week. (an exposition is a persuasive text) We started coming up with ideas and the students had to persuade me to buy their product. This looks like it is going to be lots of fun. Have a great week everyone! Mrs. Tammy Gallagher - Classroom Teacher
YEAR 6: Hello everyone and welcome back to Week 2 of Term 3! We had a good response from our
Primary Students last week in regards to participating in the NSW Premier’s 10 Week Sporting Challenge. The Challenge Log Books have been sent home and students have already started recording their physical activity. Remember the aim of the challenge is to get all children being active at school and at home. Term 3 Homework will start today and can be handed in on Friday. P.S – Stay tuned for a date for the upcoming PSSA Boys Touch game against Kandos PS. Permission notes will be handed out tomorrow for the students selected in the team. Have a great week everybody! Cheers. Mr. Honeysett - Classroom Teacher
YEAR 6 MATHS: This week in Mathematics we will look at division strategies and Order of Opera-
tions using the mnemonic BODMAS (Brackets, Orders (square roots and exponents), Division, Multiplication, Addition
and Subtraction). Homework sheet due on Thursday. Mrs. Cathy Gallagher
On Friday, Georgie Lane and Fletcher Hogden travelled
to Eastern Creek race course in Sydney to compete in the State Cross Country. It was an enjoyable day and everyone had fun. Georgie ran 6km and came 42nd,
Fletcher ran 3km and came 43rd.

We are starting our last unit on “Families and Communities” This unit will again focus on methods
of research along with family structures and how communities interact in fulfilling the needs of
both individuals and families. The class is working hard to ensure that they have sufficient time
for revision and completion of all course requirements during this busy term. Mrs Scifleet
We have started our last unit of the HSC course relating to “Work and the Individual” The Trial
HSC exam will be conducted in Week 5.
Congratulations to Teighla Hickson on her high quality independent research project. Teigha's
project was based on lowering the voting age to 16. Her end product was highly professional,
well presented and well researched. Mrs Scifleet
In Week 10 of last term I was fortunate enough to be selected to attend a Hospitality Immersion week. Along with other teachers across the state, I worked with chefs from the William Anglis In-stitute and Master Chef, Alessandro Pavoni. It was an extremely busy week culminating in a 5 course luncheon and dinner for industry and department leaders. The week was gruelling yet sat-isfying and I have come away with new skills and knowledge which I shall incorporate into my classes. Sessions included molecular degustation, poke bowls dessert making (I never want to make another macaron in my life) Gelato making (love that) and everything from deboning and stuffing quail to barbajada and everything in between. It was also reaffirming to know that my skills and knowledge are current, based on industry requirements. It’s all about the POKE bowls. Mrs Scifleet
