DUNCRAIG SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM

The Duncraig Senior High School Music Program offers specialist music instruction for students in Year Seven to

Twelve. The program includes class music, instrumental studies and ensemble performance.

Students may enrol in the program as:

• Continuing Instrumental (Continuing from primary school with flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn,

euphonium or classical guitar)

• Beginning Instrumental (Offered according to need and availability. Places may be offered in low brass,

percussion or saxophone)

• Private Instrumental (Enrolled in class music and ensemble only; (This option is only for students who study an

instrument outside of school with a qualified private tutor. Students must be able to play to an acceptable

standard and be able to read standard music notation)

All students in the Music Class are required to participate in a core ensemble.

All music students are assigned to an appropriate core ensemble. Students who are selected for beginner

instruments will attend ensemble when their instrumental skills reach the required standard. In addition, there

are select ensembles in which students may choose to participate.

Current ensembles are:

Core Ensembles

• Senior Concert Band

• Junior Concert Band

• Senior Guitar Ensemble

• Junior Guitar Ensemble

Optional Ensembles

• Jazz Band-by invitation

• Contemporary Band-by audition

The positions available in Year 7 will be offered initially to students enrolling in the Continuing Instrumental stream.

From there, beginner instrumental positions will be offered to students who have successfully completed the

aptitude test, based on their scores, school report and acceptance of an instrument which will be offered by

Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) for 2021. Students who learn their instrument privately can apply for a

class music only position and will also be required to attend ensemble.

ENSEMBLE MUSIC

Performance as part of an ensemble provides students with the opportunity for practical and creative

expression. Ensemble performances are our most effective way of sharing the talent and achievements of our

students and are presented in a variety of settings including festivals, concerts and tours. Additionally, ensembles

provide students with the opportunity to participate in tours within WA, as well as interstate and overseas. In 2006

the Wind Orchestra and Jazz Band participated in the Australian International Festival in Sydney, including

performances at the Sydney Opera House and being awarded Bronze and Silver, building upon the success of our

inaugural overseas tour in 2004 to New Zealand for Rhapsody Rotorua. In 2010 the Wind Orchestra joined with

students from Margaret River SHS and Warnbro CHS to perform at the Leeuwin Schools Spectacular at the Leeuwin

Estate Winery. In 2012, the Wind Orchestra and Jazz Band returned to the Rhapsody Rotorua Festival. The Music

students also have the opportunity to attend a two-day camp in term two in preparation for the Winter Concert.

Ensembles rehearse for one hour per week before or after school. Students enrolled in class music who are learning

an instrument privately are required to attend ensemble as this forms a part of their class music mark.

CLASS MUSIC

Class Music is compulsory for all students enrolling in the music program, and covers the topics of music literature,

history, aural skills, musicianship, theory and composition. Students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are required to attend

these classes, which provide important grounding in music studies. The course provides students with a variety of

creative and academic activities and exposes them to a wide range of musical styles and genres. This helps to

reinforce concepts taught in instrumental lessons and ensemble rehearsals and allows students the opportunity to

further extend their knowledge through hands on practical and written activities. Students work in a number of

areas including:

• Basic Music Knowledge: Beat, Rhythm, Pitch, Notation and Dynamics

• Aural skills: Pitch, Intervals, Tonality, Beat and Rhythm

• History: Western Classical Art Music, Jazz and Popular

• Composition: Creating and arranging pieces in a range of styles and genres

• Performance: Performing solo and in small groups

Class music occupies two periods per week in the student timetable, replacing one “option” subject per

semester.

BEGINNING INSTRUMENTAL STREAM

This stream caters for students who may wish to begin instrumental music studies in Year Seven. Applicants are

required to sit a short aptitude test. No previous musical experience is necessary for the test.

Students may be offered places in the Beginning Instrumental stream based on the results of this testing, their

school report, their physical suitability for the particular instrument and the availability of instruments as they are

provided by IMSS.

It is anticipated that next year, beginning instrumental lessons may be offered in:

• Low Brass (trombone, euphonium)

• Orchestral Percussion

• Saxophone

• Voice and contemporary guitar are not offered

Please note: flute, clarinet, trumpet and classical guitar are not offered as beginner instruments.

Students accepting placement in beginning instrumental lessons will also be required to participate in Class Music,

and will also be placed in one of the core ensembles, being Junior Band or Junior Guitar Ensemble when their skills

reach an appropriate standard.

CONTINUING INSTRUMENTAL STREAM

This stream caters for students who wish to continue learning an instrument with the Instrumental Music Schools Services (IMSS-previously known as SIM), which is a separate school within the Department of Education. Students who have been learning an instrument with an IMSS teacher in Year 6 at a government primary school are eligible (and encouraged!) to continue their instrumental study in Year 7.

Continuing Instrumental lessons are offered in:

• Brass: Trumpet, Trombone and Baritone/Euphonium • Woodwind: Flute and Clarinet• Strings: Classical Guitar (please note: orchestral strings such as violin are not taught)• Percussion: Orchestral Percussion

Continuing IMSS students are expected to continue on the instrument they have been learning in primary school.

In some cases, students may be offered the opportunity to change their instrument. This may be from flute or

clarinet to saxophone or trumpets may be offered euphonium or tuba.

These changes are offered only as needed to balance instrumentation of the school bands.

to remain in the Music program until the end of Year 8. Students who do not wish to continue in Music into Year 9

will be invited to notify the school of a change to enrolment during the subject selection process in Year 8.

(unless receiving private tuition) and, 3) one ensemble rehearsal each week.
