From the Principal’s Desk….

I hope you and your family enjoyed Thanksgiving. We are certainly grateful for

the numerous parents/guardians who visited DMS during American Education

Week. Effectively educating students is truly dependent on having a strong

school-parent partnership. We appreciate the compliments and feedback provided

to us. Your support and insight is crucial to the success of our school.

We also would like to thank you and the PTA

for sponsoring the “Be Amazing” video/music

assembly that was held on 11/30/15. It is part

of our character education program that

emphasizes personal responsibility, respect for others, hard work and

perseverance. Those who do amazing things don't get caught up in negative

activities because they're aware of the negative consequences associated with

them. Amazing people don't let bullies, criticism, or uncontrollable circumstances

hold them back from achieving their goals. They learn from mistakes and

enthusiastically move forward toward reaching their full potential.

December brings us interim reports which will be coming home on 12/4/15.

Conference afternoon will be 12/9/15 however parents will once again directly

schedule conferences with teachers to provide flexibility in terms of times/dates.

In addition, we have a Baltimore Blast player coming to

speak to our students on 12/22 about the challenges

professional athletes face and how perseverance made all

the difference. For those of you that are new to DMS, our

music concerts occur in January since December tends to be

a very busy month for families. Dates are published on the

calendar found in this newsletter.

Snow and ice soon? This is a good time to review plans with your child as to where

he/she should go in case of early closings. DMS clubs are always cancelled when

BCPS closes due to inclement weather. We appreciate that parents use the

following resources to access closing/delay information instead of calling our

school since our two phone lines can become quickly overwhelmed: 1. BCPS One mobile app

2. BCPS Web Home Page links to emergency announcements

3. Education Channel, Comcast Channel 73 or Verizon 34

4. BCPS Telephone Information at 410-887-5555

5. Local radio and television stations

In addition, please note that some walkers are arriving more

than twenty minutes prior to 8:00 a.m. when teachers are

not yet on duty to supervise students. We have been making announcements to

remind students when our doors open so we can avoid having students waiting

outside in the cold.

Thank you for continuing to communicate with DMS staff regarding your child’s

experiences and progress at DMS. We certainly wish you and your family a safe,

warm month of December!

Sincerely,

Susan E Harris

MAP Testing

Results from fall MAP testing were distributed to

students on November 24, 2015 along with a brochure, A

Parents Introduction to Measures of Academic Progress

(MAP). MAP assessment results are used to monitor your

child’s growth in mathematics and reading achievement

over time. Much like a growth chart illustrates your

child’s height from one year to the next, MAP assessments measure student

growth in reading and mathematics from test to test and from one year to the

next. MAP assessment results will not be used as part of your child’s grade in

either mathematics or reading. MAP assessments provide just one part of a

picture of student achievement and growth. Winter MAP testing will occur during

the month of February. For testing questions, please contact Cheryl Scott,

administrator in charge of testing. [email protected]

PARCC Testing

PARCC tests measure how well students have learned grade-level material in

English/language arts and mathematics. Students who meet or exceed

expectations are on track for the next grade level, and, ultimately, college and

careers. 2014-2015 PARCC assessment results will be distributed to students in

the next few weeks. Students will receive an Individual Student Report (ISR) for

each content area tested. ISRs show student performance in relation to meeting

grade-level and college and career ready expectations. Based on a student’s score,

a performance level is reported that indicates how well the student met the

academic expectations for their grade level. On the back side of the ISR is

information for parents that explains how parents can use the testing data to

support their students academically. The testing window for the 2015-2016 PARCC

test administration begins in late April. For testing questions, please contact

Cheryl Scott, administrator in charge of testing. [email protected]

Device Care for Sixth Graders

As we move further into the school year, and the novelty of

having a laptop computer 24/7 begins to wear off, parents are

asked to remind students of their responsibility to take the

utmost care of their devices. Our dedicated computer

technician has identified a few devices that were likely exposed to more than

normal wear and tear. In accordance with the BCPS Acceptable Use Policy,

students are responsible for protecting school property and vandalism is

prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, “accessing, modifying, or destroying

equipment, programs, files, or settings on any computer or technology resource.”

Students need approval from a teacher or administrator to use personal electronic

devices or memory storage devices that they bring to school. For questions,

please contact Cheryl Scott, 6th grade assistant principal. [email protected]

A Note from the School Counseling Office

Throughout the year, Dumbarton and the PTA plan fun activities for

our students. The costs for these activities are kept to a minimum

when possible but sometimes they can add up. If your family has

experienced financial difficulties, please let the school counselor

know. We often have extra tickets for dances and events, as well

as extra t-shirts and the like. We want your child to participate in all that DMS

has to offer. Please let us know how we can help!

November proved to be a fun and

eventful month. Not only did we

celebrate American Education Week

with visitors to all grade levels, but

we had lots of other notable events

both in and outside of school, too!

Key Highlights from October:

Congratulations! – Congratulations to Mrs. Ninos, our 8th grade math teacher, for

winning the school-wide door decorating contest! Teachers and students were

challenged with creating a door presentation that represents the growth mindset we

are developing here at Dumbarton Middle School. Her Shrek inspired door received

1st place…way to go!!

*A special thanks to Molly J. and Pher M. for making Mrs. Ninos’s door such a success!

Building a Community! – This past month the Dumbarton SGA spent some time at

Rodgers Forge Elementary School reading books to students. What a great way to

help build our community of readers and model fluency! This experience serves as

just another example of how what we do can create a meaningful impact on

others…we are all very proud of our SGA representatives!

An Evening with Buck Showalter! – On November 16th, Mr. Ferenschak and Mr.

Birnbaum tagged along with Dumbarton’s very own Emerson C., Lucas C., and Max D.

to take part in a Q and A with Orioles manager, Buck Showalter. Showalter

entertained questions on how leadership and responsibility played an integral role in

his personal and professional success. A special “kudos” goes to Max D., as his

question to Buck sparked a great conversation!!

students for earning recognition for their positive behavior and growth mindset:

In the Middle of the Middle

This month in Mr. Bauer’s Language Arts classes, students have been researching

human rights violations in order to create action plans to raise awareness about

said violations, all in an effort to gather background information about refugees

while reading the book, Outcasts United. Mr. Rudie’s Pre-Algebra classes have not

only been working out their brains, but their bodies too! Professor Rudie had his

students measure the rate of change between the first and second attempt in

doing push-ups and jumping jacks. Ask the students about the chicken wing

dissections that took place in their science classes; they should be able to tell you

about the different types of tissues observed. The field trip to the Maryland Zoo

on November 6th was a great time had by all- students, teachers, and parents.

Thanks to Ms. Damon for her amazing organizational planning to ensure the event

went off without a hitch.

Congratulations to the recipients of SWAG for the month of November:

Happy December!! We have had a very productive Fall at Dumbarton. The

PTSA has already made plans to give grants to the Kindness Club, as well as

each grade level to plan special events and activities.

Many thanks to all who helped make American Education Week a warm,

welcoming experience for families who came to visit. We are especially

grateful for our wonderful Hospitality Chairs, Sue Parts and Joy

Lewandowski, who did an amazing job organizing the yummy treats and

coffee we had to offer to visitors.

Tissues for Teachers Drive- Teachers use their own money

to buy tissues and it can add up quickly with all the colds

floating around during fall and winter months. Let’s help our

teachers by saving them this expense and donating boxes of tissues to

the school!

Wishing you and yours a wonderful and healthy holiday season,

A Message from the DMS Green Committee The Green Committee at Dumbarton Middle School is committed to

fostering an awareness of protecting the environment,

the value of recycling and the importance of reducing

waste. In school, students and teachers are encouraged

to recycle daily by having separate bins in the

classroom, the cafeteria and various work areas

throughout the building to encourage recycling and waste management. The

Green Team Club contributes to protecting the environment by taking care

of plants and flowers in the building and on school grounds. They also collect

used printer cartridges in the office. Business/Computer Science students

are getting involved by exploring how to expand our no mowing areas and how

to build birdhouses to protect local birds.

We would like to ask parents and guardians to assist us in raising

awareness in your home and local community to” Protect the Environment”

and to “Think Green”. Encouraging students to recycle at home, to not

waste what is packed in their lunches, and to help with community efforts to

keep the environment clean for all is a great way to start. We look forward

to your involvement, and we would love hearing any ideas you may have to

assist us in our efforts to move Dumbarton forward to becoming a Green

School. [email protected]

From the Attendance Committee We want to express our gratitude for everyone who makes it possible for students

to attend school every day, on time, and ready to learn. Regular school attendance

is the key to high school graduation and college and career readiness. We recognize

that there are times when students have to come to school late or leave early, for

example, due to a doctor’s appointment. Students can still be

counted as being present a full day if they are present for 4

or more hours. A student is counted present for a half day if

they are in attendance for 2 or more hours, but less than 4

hours of the school day.

As a school community, we are joining together to raise

awareness about the importance of school attendance. Team BCPS has designated

January as Attendance Awareness Month. During the month, parents and students

will receive information about the importance of school attendance and participate

in exciting activities and incentive programs. Join us in making this month a success.

DMS has a large number of students who currently have perfect attendance and we

know that parents make all the difference in reinforcing the importance of

attending school regularly. Thank you for continuing to closely monitor your child’s

attendance and reinforce the importance of attending school every day and on time.

Course Registration forms for 2016-2017 Preliminary registration forms will be sent home with 6th and 7th grade

students in the upcoming weeks. The courses listed on the registration

forms represent the regular progression of courses for your child. If

you have any questions about courses or interest in adding/deleting GT

courses for next year please contact your child’s teacher in writing/via

email as the preliminary registration process is not the venue for

those changes. DMS will be happy to make adjustments based on

teacher recommendations that we receive throughout the spring. Finalized

schedules will be mailed home in late August. If you have any questions about the

registration process please contact your child’s grade level counselor or Ms. Burch

at [email protected].

and Talented Education!

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about issues related to gifted and talented education in Baltimore County Public Schools to

become active with our group, the GT CAC.

Supporters work hard to disseminate information and share resources about GT

education across all grades- elementary, middle and high school levels. Supporters provide a forum and a support system for parents and GT advocates. Supporters communicate and collaborate with BCPS about the needs of GT students. Supporters advocate for the identification of students’ advanced academic needs

and for instruction that is responsive to these students’ learning styles, behaviors, and methods of communication and that enable these students to develop to their full potential.

We would love to increase the size and diversity of our active group members so if presenting at Board of Education meetings, creating communication materials, organizing and attending formal and informal meetings on topics of interest, maintaining a social media and web presence, talking with parents, and, above all, advocating for our GT kids sounds interesting to you, please send us an email at [email protected]. Instilling a Growth Mindset:

Student Praise

Dumbarton Middle School provides a culture of encouragement fostering continual

student growth with the belief that through effort, motivation and resilience, all students

will improve academically and achieve personal success.

Work harder, get smarter!

To successfully instill a growth mindset in our students, parents and teachers alike need

to be aware of how they praise students. While parents and teachers may want to praise

students to instill confidence in them, the words they use to do so may unwittingly

convey a message detrimental to students’ continued success.

Read a short report from Good Morning America explaining how praise can actually

bring down students’ performance: “Why Praise Can Be Bad for Kids”

To send a message supporting a growth mindset, praise students for something they can

control—their effort—rather than solely on their accomplishments.

Use the examples on the following table to reflect on how you praise your children.

Fixed Mindset: What NOT to Say

Growth Mindset: What to Say

“Great job!”

“You are so smart!”

“Your drawing is wonderful; you are the next Picasso!”

“You’re a natural at this, aren’t you?”

“You are really athletic!”

“Terrific effort! It really paid off!”

“You work hard in school and it shows!”

“I can see you have been practicing your drawing; what a great improvement!”

“Your practice really improved your performance.”

“You really work hard and pay attention when you are on that field!”

The next time you are ready to praise your children, stop and think about how to use that

opportunity to praise their effort, motivation or resilience instead of their

accomplishments, knowing that those accomplishments would not be possible without all

the hard work that went into achieving them.

For a detailed comparison of fixed and growth mindsets, see the chart on the following

page.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Performing Music Students:

We are very proud of our DMS musicians and singers and look forward to showcasing their

talents this year. Parent support in joining us for evening concerts and ensuring students have

proper performance attire are important elements of ensuring concerts are successful. Please note

the dates below that your child’s grade level will be performing:

WINTER CONCERTS January 13, 7:00 – 8th grade

January 25, 7:00 – 7th grade and Jazz Ensemble

January 27, 7:00 – 6th grade

SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL May 16, 7:00 – 6th grade

May 18, 7:00 – 7th grade

May 23, 7:00 – 8th grade and Jazz Ensemble

May 25, 7:00 – Honors Concert

What can students do to ensure they fulfill their obligation as a performer?

1. Arrive at 6:30 pm which is thirty minutes prior to the beginning of each concert.

2. Wear professional clothing which is required: black dress pants, black long skirts (short

skirts would need leggings under them), black shoes, and white, collared shirts. Dark

dress pants in another color, if black is not available, will also work.

3. All students are required to wear the DMS bow tie during the performance. The

maroon bow ties may be purchased at the school store for $6.00

4. Attend both the winter and spring concert. Participation is required and is a part of the

student’s grade. Students with an acceptable excuse for missing a concert must present a

note from their parents/guardians as soon as possible to their director to avoid having

their grade impacted.

What can parents do to support our performers?

1. Ensure your child has the appropriate attire to wear prior to their concert date.

2. Attend your child’s concerts and stay for the entire performance. Concerts last less than

one hour.

3. Continue to encourage your child to practice! Email your child’s teacher if you have

questions/concerns.

Thank you for your continued support of our music program at Dumbarton Middle School.

Sincerely,

Mr. Miskimon Mrs. Long Mrs. Hoffman Ms. Sills ([email protected]) [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

This is the time of year when students’ supplies are running

low. Please take the time to assess your child’s supplies and
