WELCOMEEDITORS’ LETTERS
Hello and welcome to DUENDE!DUENDE (Du-end-day) is an Spanish word, with no direct English translation, meaning a heightened feeling that a piece of art gives you. The feelings that come from inside, whether it be chills, a smile or a tear, it produces a bodily response to an expression of art and creativity. We hope it’s the very same feeling this issue creates in you as after all, the very point of the magazine is to inspire and help you along your pathway in your chosen creative profession. We want to feed your imaginations, motivate you, and inspire you! Each issue of DUENDE is themed and as an entrance into the world we have chosen the theme ‘light’. The word ‘light’ comes with many meanings and in many forms, which allowed us to truely get creative with our concepts, and more importantly, find out what light means to the individual. For DUENDE, light is guiding your way to your dream destination. It’s shining a light on industry professionals, rising stars, photography, graphics, illustration, art, exhibitions and much more!
HOLLY CORSIENIA ALEXANDRA
The first issue of DUENDE had to exude positivity, creativity and had to inspire. For myself the word light encompasses all of these qualities. The ‘Light’ issue explores the relationship between objects and light, and the ways in which their dynamics continue to reveal and change each other. Through my pieces for the first issue I try to explore the many facets of light. How it manifests itself as soft morning luminescence, through Victorian windows and ghostly figures (p.6) or the constant battle between day and night in The Equinox (p.62). Light is the element that determines how we feel and shapes not only our planet and universe, but our emotions as well. Through the reserach for DUENDE I have found light
can inspire everything from people’s ideas to people’s careers. We see this in Rachel Noble’s work, as she transforms light into beautiful digital art prints (p.56). Light can also ‘greatly influence the atmosphere and feel in a piece of design’ as quoted by Leigh Evans on his interpretation of light in ‘The dream keepers cottage’ (p.68). As well as art, we see how it molds everything from fashion to interiors in Jenny Smith’s article ‘Cast light’ (p.48).With this issue, we hope to provoke creative thinking, lighten your imagination and to draw you into our own little galaxy that is DUENDE. And if you have any light to shed on anything featured in the magazine, we’d love to hear from you. But most of all I hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed making it!
I am so happy to welcome you to the very first issue of DUENDE!Let me start by telling you what the word ‘light’ means to me.When I think of light I think of hope. Light is the silver lining on a cloud, the light at the end of the tunnel, the lighthouse guiding you through the stormy seas! It’s the hope you cling on to in tough times. With a rather romantic impression of light, it’s easy to see this reflected within my work. Creating DUENDE has allowed me to define my style. I would say my work is romantic, clean, and bohemian with a dark element. When incorporating light into my editorials, I didn’t want it to be literal, but more a sense, a feeling. ‘Black to Bloom’ (p.18) was very floral, and natural, relating
back to the life that light gives to the world. There was an innocence, purity and love between the two models portrayed, which worked perfectly with this ‘mother nature’ theme. Whilst ‘Refraction’ (p.78) has the romance of Ophelia, it was mixed with the basic science of light meeting water. With one location, and little styling, I loved focusing on the shapes and angles of the model submerging into the water. The reflection and refraction created makes the image. What was interesting to see when creating DUENDE was the amount of people’s work light had inspired. Our interview with Patrick Rochon (p.72) tells us about his work painting with light, whilst with the advances in technology; we speak to Moon Berlin (p.16) about incorporating light into clothing. The whole process of creating DUENDE has certainly been a journey that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed! I’d like to personally thank fellow editor Holly in making DUENDE a reality with me. I hope DUENDE inspires you as much as it has inspired me. Enjoy!!
