Headlight “smart” switch-offThis function helps reduce battery use byautomatically switching off the headlight. The deviceis enabled in three instances:

- 1) When the key is turned from OFF to ON andthe engine is not started within 60 seconds, theheadlight is turned off and will be turned back onnext time you start the engine.

- in case 2, after the vehicle has been running withthe headlights on and the engine is stopped usingthe RUN-STOP button on the RH switch. In this case, 60 seconds after stopping theengine, the headlight is turned off and will beturned back on next time you start the engine.

- 3) While starting up the engine, the headlight isturned off and back on as soon as the engine isstarted.

Headlight “smart” switch-onThis function allows programmed activation of theheadlight even with the motorcycle off (Key-Off). Theinstrument panel stays active for 60 seconds soonafter Key-Off, and the headlight can be switched onby pressing switch (1Fig. 9), in position A " " or B" ".During these 60 seconds, each time switch (1Fig. 9),is pressed in position A “ ” or B “ ”, theinstrument panel will activate the headlight for 30seconds; each press of the switch will add to theheadlight activation time, up to a maximum of 6presses (equivalent to a maximum activation time of180 seconds). After the first time you press switch (1Fig. 9), inposition A “ ” or B “ ”, the period of 30 secondsstarts, thus switching on the headlight Furtherswitch-on time can be added only if you press theswitch again within these 30 seconds. If the 30seconds have elapsed, no further multiples of 30seconds can be added, and the instrument panel willswitch off the headlight. To reset this function, you must perform at least oneKey-On/ Key-Off.If the battery power is interrupted at any time whilethis function is active, when power is restored, the

61

Page 61: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

instrument panel will deactivate the function (theinstrument panel does not remain active for 60seconds).

The Immobilizer systemFor improved antitheft protection, the motorcycle isequipped with an IMMOBILIZER, an electronicsystem that inhibits engine operation whenever theignition switch is turned off.Accommodated in the handgrip of each ignition keyis an electronic device that modulates an outputsignal. When the ignition is turned on this signal isgenerated by a special antenna incorporated in theswitch and changes every time. The modulated signalrepresents the “password” (which is changed ateach start-up) by which the ECU recognizes theignition key. The ECU will only allow the engine tostart if it recognises this password.

62

Page 62: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

KeysThe owner receives 2 keys B (BLACK) with thevehicle. These keys contain the "immobilizer system code".

NoteYour Ducati dealer may ask you to produce your

Code Card in order to carry out certain servicingoperations.

The black keys (B) are regular ignition keys and areused to:

- start up the engine.- open the fuel tank filler plug.- open the seat lock.

NoteThe two keys have a small plate (1) attached that

reports their identification number.

WarningSeparate the keys and use only one of the black

keys to start the motorcycle.

The adjuster (1) located on the left-handside, where the upper end of the shock absorber isattached to the rear subframe, controls rebounddamping.Turn the adjuster (1) clockwise to increase damping,or counter-clockwise to reduce damping. Two ring nuts (2) located on the top section of theshock absorber are used to adjust the outer springpreload. To change spring preload, slacken off the upper ringnut. Then TIGHTEN or SLACKEN the lower ring nutto INCREASE or DECREASE spring preload.

STANDARD setting from the fully closed position(clockwise):

- rebound: unscrew the adjuster (1) by 8 clicksfrom Max (fully closed);

- spring preload: 20 mm from Min (allunpreloaded).

Riding the motorcycle

Running-in recommendationsMaximum rpmRotation speed for running-in period and duringstandard use (rpm):1) up to 1000 km;2) from 1000 to 2500 km.

Up to 1000 kmDuring the first 1000 km, keep an eye on the revcounter. It should never exceed: 5,500÷6,000 rpm.

During the first hours of riding, it is advisable to runthe engine at varying load and rpm, though still withinrecommended limit. To this end, roads with plenty of bends and evenslightly hilly areas are ideal for a most efficientrunning-in of engine, brakes and suspensions. For the first 100 km, use the brakes gently. Do notbrake violently or keep brake applied for too long. Thiswill enable a correct break-in of the friction materialon the brake pads against the brake discs.

For all mechanical parts of the motorcycle to adapt toone another and above all not to adversely affect thelife of basic engine parts, it is advisable to avoid harshaccelerations and not to run the engine at high rpmfor too long, especially uphill.Furthermore, the drive chain should be inspectedfrequently. Lubricate as required.

92

Page 92: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

From 1000 to 2500 kmAt this point, you can ask for more power from theengine. However, never exceed 7,000 rpm.

ImportantDuring the whole running-in period, the

maintenance and service rules recommended in theWarranty Booklet should be observed carefully.Failure to comply with these rules will release DucatiMotor Holding S.p.A. from any liability whatsoever forresulting engine damage or shorter engine life.

Strict observance of running-in recommendations willensure longer engine life and reduce the likelihood ofoverhauls and tune-ups.

Starting the engine

WarningE Before starting the engine, familiarise yourself

with the controls that you will use when riding.

NORMAL AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

WarningNever start or run the engine indoors. Exhaust

gases are poisonous and may lead to loss ofconsciousness or even death within a short time.

Move the ignition switch to (1Fig. 57). Make sure thatboth the green light N and the red light on theinstrument panel are on.

ImportantThe oil pressure light should go out a few

seconds after the engine start.

1

Fig. 57

WarningThe side stand must be fully up (in horizontal

position) as its safety sensor prevents engine startwhen down.

NoteIt is possible to start the engine with side stand

down and the gearbox in neutral. When starting thebike with a gear engaged, pull the clutch lever (in thiscase the side stand must be up).

96

Page 96: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

Shift the cold-start lever to position (B,Fig. 59). Checkthat the stop switch (2Fig. 58), is positioned to (RUN), then press the starter button (3Fig. 58).Allow the engine to start on its own, without turningthe throttle twistgrip.

NoteIf the battery is flat, the system automatically

disables operation of the starter motor.

ImportantDo not rev up the engine when it is cold. Allow

some time for the oil to warm up and reach all pointsthat need lubricating.

Set the cold-start lever in the vertical position (A) toreach the engine speed of approx. 1,400÷1,500 rpm.

Subsequently, as the engine warms up, move thecold-start lever gradually towards its vertical position(A,Fig. 59). Once the engine is at normal runningspeed it should idle smoothly with the cold-start levercompletely closed.

High ambient temperature (over 35 °C/95 °F).

Follow the same procedure described for "Normalambient temperature" without using the cold-startcontrol.

Cold ambient temperature (less than 10 °C/50 °F).

Follow the procedure described for "Normal ambienttemperature" extending the time for engine warmingup (point 5) to 5 minutes.

98

Page 98: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

Moving off1) Disengage the clutch by squeezing the clutch

lever.2) Push down the gear change lever firmly with the

tip of your foot to engage first gear.3) Speed up the engine, turn the throttle twistgrip,

gradually release the clutch lever at the sametime; The motorcycle will start moving.

4) Release the clutch lever completely andaccelerate.

5) To shift up, close the throttle to slow downengine, disengage the clutch, lift the gear changelever and let go of clutch lever.

To shift down, proceed as follows: release thetwistgrip, pull the clutch lever, shortly speed up tohelp gears synchronise, shift down (engage nextlower gear) and release the clutch. The controls should be used correctly and timely:when riding uphill do not hesitate to shift down assoon as the motorcycle tends to slow down, so youwill avoid stressing the engine and the motorcycleabnormally.

WarningAvoid harsh accelerations, as this may lead to

misfiring and transmission snatching. The clutchlever should not be held in longer than necessaryafter a gear is engaged, otherwise friction parts mayoverheat and wear out.

WarningProlonged rearing could deactivate the ABS

system.

99

Page 99: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

BrakingSlow down in time, shift down to engine-brake firstand then brake applying both brakes. Pull in the clutchlever before the motorcycle comes to a stop toprevent the engine stalling.

ABS system (for ABS version only).Using the brakes correctly under adverse conditionsis the hardest – and yet the most critical - skill tomaster for a rider. Braking is one of the most difficultand dangerous moments when riding a two wheeledvehicle: the possibility of falling or having an accidentduring this difficult moment is statistically higher thanany other moment. A locked front wheel leads to lossof traction and stability, resulting in loss of control. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) has beendeveloped to enable riders to use the vehicles brakingforce to the fullest possible amount in emergencybraking or under poor pavement or adverse weatherconditions.ABS uses hydraulics and electronics to limit pressurein the brake circuit when a special sensor mounted tothe wheel signals the electronic control unit that thewheel is about to lock up.This avoids wheel lockup and preserves traction.Pressure is raised back up immediately and the

control unit keeps controlling the brake until the riskof a lockup disappears.Normally, the rider will perceive ABS operation as aharder feel or a pulsation of the brake lever and pedal. The front and rear brakes use separate controlsystems, meaning that they operate independently.Likewise, the ABS is not an integral braking systemand does not control both the front and rear brake atthe same time.If desired, the system can be disabled from theinstrument panel, using the “ABS disabling function”(seepage 52).

100

Page 100: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

WarningWith the ABS system deactivated, the vehicle

maintains the characteristics of the standard brakingsystem, therefore the use of only one of the brakesreduces the motorcycle's braking efficiency. Neveruse the brake controls harshly or suddenly; as youmay lock the wheels and lose control of themotorcycle. When riding in the rain or on slipperysurfaces, braking capacity is significantly reduced.Always use the brakes very gently and carefully whenriding under these conditions. Any suddenmanoeuvres may lead to loss of control. Whentackling long, high-gradient downhill road tracts, shiftdown gears to use engine braking. Apply one brakeat a time and use brakes sparingly. Keeping thebrakes applied all the time would cause the frictionmaterial to overheat and reduce braking powerdangerously. Tyre inflation pressures below thespecified value will reduce braking efficiency, andcompromise steering precision and roadholding onbends.

101

Page 101: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

Stopping the motorcycleReduce speed, shift down and release the throttletwistgrip.Shift down to engage first gear and then neutral.Apply the brakes and bring the motorcycle to acomplete stop.To switch the engine off, simply turn the key to (2).

ImportantNever leave the key in the ON position (1) when

engine is stopped, or this will damage the electriccomponents.

RefuellingNever overfill the tank when refuelling. Fuel shouldnever be touching the rim of filler recess.

WarningUse fuel with low lead content and an original

octane number of at least 95.

WarningThe vehicle is only compatible with fuel having

a maximum content of ethanol of 10% (E10).Using fuel with ethanol content over 10% isforbidden. Using it could result in severe damage ofthe engine and motorcycle components. Using fuelwith ethanol content over 10% will make thewarranty null and void.

Refer to the “Top-ups” page 155 table.Be sure there is no fuel trapped in the filler recess.

Main maintenance operations

Changing the air filter

ImportantHave the air filter maintenance performed at a

Ducati Dealer or authorised Service Centre.

Checking brake and clutch fluid levelThe levels should not fall below the MIN marks on therespective reservoirs. If level drops below the limit, air can get into thecircuit and make the system ineffective.Fluids must be topped up and changed at theintervals specified in the scheduled maintenancetable reported in the Warranty Booklet; pleasecontact a Ducati Dealer or authorised Service Centre.

ImportantIt is recommended that all brake and clutch lines

be changed every four years.

CLUTCH SYSTEMIf the control lever has excessive play and thetransmission snatches or jams when engaging a gear, this indicates that air is in the circuit. Contact yourDucati Dealer or authorised Service Centre to havethe system inspected and air drained out.

WarningClutch fluid level will increase as clutch plate

friction material wears down. Do not exceed thespecified level (3 mm above the minimum level).

BRAKE SYSTEMIf you find excessive play on brake lever or pedal andbrake pads are still in good condition, contact yourDucati Dealer or authorised Service Centre to havethe system inspected and any air drained out of thecircuit.

TyresFront tyre pressure:2.25 bar - 2.29 kg/sq. cmRear tyre pressure:2.50 bar - 2.55 kg/sq. cm

As tyre pressure is affected by changes intemperature and altitude; check and adjust themwhenever you are riding in areas where there arelarge variations in temperature or altitude.

ImportantCheck and adjust the pressures with the tyres

cold. To avoid front wheel rim distortion, when ridingon bumpy roads, increase tyre pressure by 0.2 - 0.3bar.

REPAIRING OR REPLACING TYRESIn the event of a tiny puncture, tubeless tyres will takea long time to deflate, as they tend to keep air inside. If you find low pressure on one tyre, check the tyrefor punctures.

WarningPunctured tyres must be replaced. Replace

tyres with recommended standard tyres only. Besure to tighten the valve caps securely to avoid leakswhen riding. Never fit tyres with inner tubes, as thesecan cause the tyre to burst suddenly, with possiblyserious consequences for the rider and passenger.

After replacing a tyre, the wheel must be balanced.

WarningDo not remove or shift the wheel balancing

weights.

Page 139: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

MINIMUM TREAD DEPTHMeasure tread depth (S) at the point where tread ismost worn down: it should not be less than 2 mm,and in any case not less than the legal limit.

ImportantVisually inspect the tyres at regular intervals for

cracks and cuts, especially on the side walls, andbulges or large stains that indicate internal damageReplace them if badly damaged. Remove any stonesor other foreign bodies caught in the tread.

Cleaning and replacing the spark plugsSpark plugs are essential to smooth engine runningand should be checked at regular intervals. This is a relatively simple operation and provides agood indication of how well the engine is running.Pull the spark plug caps off the spark plugs andremove the plugs from the cylinder heads using thewrench supplied in the toolkit.Check the colour of the ceramic insulator around thecentral electrode: a uniform light brown colourindicates good engine condition. If the insulation is any other colour, or if there are darkdeposits, replace the spark plug and describe thecondition of the old plug to a Ducati dealer orAuthorized Service Centre. Also check the central electrode; if it is worn orglazed, replace the spark plug.Check the distance between the electrodes, whichmust be: 0.7÷0.8 mm.

0,7÷0,8 mm

Fig. 114

ImportantIf adjustment is required, bend the side

electrode carefully. A gap outside the specified limitswill adversely affect engine performance and maylead to difficult starting or erratic idling.

Thoroughly clean the electrode and insulation using awire brush, and check the condition of the gasket.Carefully clean the seat in the cylinder head and becareful not to let any foreign material fall into thecombustion chamber.

143

Page 143: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

Insert the spark plug in the cylinder head and screwin fully by hand.Tighten to a torque of 20 Nm.If you do not have a torque wrench, after hand-tightening the spark plug, turn it an additional half turnwith the wrench provided in the tool kit.

ImportantDo not use spark plugs with an unsuitable heat

rating or incorrect reach. The spark plug must betightened correctly.

144

Page 144: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

Cleaning the motorcycleTo preserve the finish of metal parts and paintwork, wash and clean your motorcycle at regular intervals, anyway according to the road conditions you ride in.Use specific products only. Prefer biodegradableproducts. Avoid aggressive detergents or solvents.Only use water and neutral soap to clean the Plexiglasand the seat. Periodically manually clean allaluminium components. Use special detergents, suitable for aluminium parts FREE of abrasives orcaustic soda.

NoteDo not use sponges with abrasive parts or steel

wool: only use soft cloths.

However, the warranty does not apply to motorcycleswhenever poor maintenance status is ascertained.

ImportantDo not wash your motorcycle immediately after

use, as marks can form due to evaporation of thewater on hot surfaces.Never clean the motorcycle using hot or high-pressure water jets.Cleaning the motorcycle with a high pressure waterjet may lead to seizure or serious faults in the frontfork, wheel hub assembly, electric system, headlight(fogging), front fork seals, air inlets or exhaustsilencers, with consequent loss of safety. If parts of the engine are unusually dirty or greasy, use a degreasing agent, avoiding contact withtransmission components (chain, front and rearsprockets, etc.).

Rinse with warm water and dry all surfaces withchamois leather.

WarningBraking performance may be impaired

immediately after washing the motorcycle. Nevergrease or lubricate the brake discs as this wouldcause loss of braking effectiveness. Clean the discswith an oil-free solvent.

145

Page 145: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

WarningThe headlight might fog up due to washing, rain

or moisture. Switch headlight on for a short time tohelp dry up any condensate.

Carefully clean the phonic wheels of the ABS so toensure system efficiency. Do not use aggressiveproducts so to avoid damaging the phonic wheels andthe sensors.

146

Page 146: Ducati Monster 696 Owners Manual Eng

Storing the motorcycleIf the motorcycle is to be left unridden over longperiods, it is advisable to carry out the followingoperations before storing it away:

- clean the motorcycle;- empty the fuel tank;- pour a few drops of engine oil into the cylinders

through the spark plug bores, then turn theengine over by hand a few times to form aprotective film of oil on the inner walls of thecylinder;

- place the motorcycle on the service stand;- disconnect and remove the battery.

If the motorcycle has been left unused for more thana month, the battery should be checked and re-charged if necessary.Protect the motorcycle with a suitable canvas. Thiswill protect paintwork and let condensate breatheout. The canvas is available from Ducati Performance.

Important notesThe legislation in some countries (France, Germany,Great Britain, Switzerland, etc.) sets certain noise andpollution standards.Periodically carry out the required checks and replaceparts as necessary, using Ducati original spare parts,in compliance with the regulations in the countryconcerned.
